We have had a rare winter when warm sweaters didn't get enough action but that is a rare occurrence. Cashmere is ideal and would get loads of wear!

I run warmish and wear cashmere sweaters - I wore a cashmere v-neck Saturday under a lightweight anorak to go wine tasting and run errands. I find that because it breathes so well cashmere works for me. Now a ski sweater is a different story....

Hope you'll find your way to Stumptown!!

IK, I don't run hot or cold, but I wear sweaters all winter long in Portland. And all spring. And often in summer. And obviously fall is sweater weather. Seriously. Cashmere, alpaca and heavier wool in the winter--the sweater is an essential layer. Light wool and cotton are summer layers. I really did mean it that since you are acclimatized to Austin weather, you probably would be miserable without a sweater. Portland is a tiny bit warmer than Seattle. Think how often you see Angie in outfits that feature a sweater. There is lots of room for sweaters in Portland.

Are you moving to PDX? You sound like you have more than your typical casual visit sort of interest.

I think the coat you've picked out is very stylish-looking!

As for a hood, I did buy one trench with a hood, but have since found that it doesn't really stay on my head properly - so I detached it from the coat. It kind of blocked my vision, and was a bit too big/floppy. The thing just didn't stay on, and I found it to be a pain to deal with.

I would seriously consider a stylish umbrella, along with the trench. See if you can find something that's easy to pack and that might tuck into your handbag, so that you can just pop it open when needed. I'm not great with those traditional type umbrellas, as they are a bit too bulky to carry around - but the ones that fold down into nothing are great.

That's a beautiful coat. And that's awesome that you are venturing out to our neck of the woods!

While my trench coat has a hood, I hardly ever wear it. My preference is to carry an umbrella or wear a hat if I need to keep rain off of my head. I don't like the limited peripheral vision that a hood brings, and if it's windy, my hood often will blow off anyway, so I'd just as soon wear a hat instead.

I'm glad a few other Portlanders have chimed in too. I made a mental note to myself last night that I had to come back and ask about time of year. If you are thinking of this for summer, then unlined would be fine. However, if you meant to use it for winter, given that you are acclimatized to Austin, I would say it is much too light if not lined.

I'm from Portland so I will give my 2 cents! It's a beautiful coat, but I prefer hoods to umbrella's for my lifestyle. Also, you didn't mention a removable wool lining, which I also find essential. I have a black and red trench both Michael Kors purchased at Nordstroms that have these features and now realize I could never live without this type of raincoat. But it wouldn't keep me from adding one like this as well, if you really love it, you can never have too many coats around here, IMHO>

I'm from Portland and prefer hoods to umbrellas, as well. But it also depends on what you'll be doing, IMHO. What works for dashing from parking spot to building is very different than what is comfy for a public transportation commute or a day shopping downtown or in an urban neighborhood.

IK, what time of year is this for? For summer weather this would be good, but any other time of year I would want a wool lining at the least. My trench has a lining but no hood. I wear a hat and/or use a Shedrain windpro umbrella. Hoods mess up my hair and blow down in the wind!

Late, but chiming! If you order this, could you return it if it wasn't water repellent enough? I hold mine under the faucet for a few seconds and see if the water beads up. Shockingly, not all trenches are rain proof or resistant. I've had both cotton ones and poly ones prove non-repellent. However, I just bought a lovely navy one that is cotton poly and water rolls off it. Definitely test.

A hood can be nice, but none of my trenches ever seem to have hoods. I always just carry a lightweight knit hat in my trench pocket or carry a small umbrella. Honestly, for me, in Portland, the light knit hat works better because the wind usually flips small umbrellas.

Would it be roomy enough for your layers underneath?

It looks like a great trench, it if works for water resistance and layers.

It looks great. As long as it's water repellent, you're good. (A coat without pockets? That just can't be!) The deal breaker for me would be lack of a hood. I use my hoods all the time here in Seattle, where I rarely carry an umbrella. If it's raining hard enough for an umbrella, there's a fair chance that it's too windy for an umbrella. I know a hood isn't a traditional trench feature, though.
