Well, I truly love them. And I don't think they ever really go out of style. They have a retro, vintage integrity, and if they suit the wearer, they do not truly date. But I do think they need to be making the statement. The coat needs to be rather restrained.

Have you seen my cloche hat? I will have to pose with it on for you. It is thoroughly 1920s, but I adore it. Angie suggested that I try the style and so I did. I really only wear it a few times a year, but love it while I am wearing it.

You and I might both want to consider the modern cloche that she linked to. To me it looks a bit like a riding cap!!

Suz, You may have just saved me a few hundred! Looking at the pictures when I took them I started thinking the same thing...that maybe I should just save them for special occasions with the dress coat I have. Maybe they aren't everyday kind of hats. I used to wear them a lot but that was before the knit beanie kind became more the trend.

Thanks for the honesty! And the compliments, I do still think they are fun!

Oh, Peri -- you look gorgeous in those hats! I LOVE you in the cloche style (1 and 2) and #3 is just plain mad-hatter fun.

Okay. Keep in mind that this is coming from somebody who is a modern classic at heart.

These hats are not "trendy." But they suit you.

I would wear with a very simple and classic coat. Not asymmetrical this or that. Not oversized this or that.

But maybe in an unexpected colour.

Or maybe just save them to wear with your formal coat. They are rather dressy hats, not meant to be worn super casually, really.

I like the idea of the EF coat, but I'm troubled by the wide placement of the buttons and the description that says three buttons and the photo that shows four. I love the style of the asymmetrical coat, but the sleeves look super narrow, like you couldn't wear a bulky sweater or much of anything long sleeved underneath. I have fat arms, so maybe I am sensitive to that aspect.

I see nothing wrong with wanting to showcase one's hats. After all, I cut my hair so I could resume wearing my earrings.

I like the asymmetrical boiled wool one, Peri--really, really like it-- and I don't think it would date. Love the idea of getting a short black coat to go with your hats. You still have the heavier one to wear when you need more warmth.

I think it would look fine open, too. I tried on a similar coat by AllSaints and liked it open as well as closed.

Buahahaha! I don't even wear a coat until it's dipping into the 30's, or 40's if I'm actually standing outside for awhile.

Every woman needs a coat to showcase her hats (says the Diva, who would have a milliner on retainer, if she could afford it).

I like the asymmetrical coat, just not sure how it would work with your hats. Diana's link has promise too, as long as the neck isn't too high.

I'm not a fan of the arms in the EF coat. I like a finished wrist, or a slightly more tapered one.

Hi Gang, yes Suz is right. I do have a hooded puffer for our actual cold days, so I was looking for something for the 40s-50s where we spend most of our winter.

Diana, thanks! I like the look but something less structured would do better with my hats I think.

Suz, the Halogen is my purple coat, bought at NAS. No chance to wear it yet, so it may not be a keeper. I hope it is. Of the ones you "found", I love the Gallery. It may be an option. I like the BJ but the reviewer has a point about it not closing. Even in the 40s you don't really want your coat open. Except that a 40 degree winter day would feel balmy to you all!

I think I will add hat pictures later...too swamped right now!

Una, Diana - Peri lives where it is WARM. She's only just now starting to enjoy her fall things! :)

So the coats that won't work for us are exactly the kind she needs. Basically, she needs a light wool topper. Like that gorgeous Vince one Denise got last year....

Check out this Betsy Johnson for something a little different. You have to click on it to see all the ways it can be worn.

I LOVE the asymmetrical one! I do not think it will date. My only concern would be warmth. It says it is lightweight so I don't think it will be very warm. But I forget what climate you live in so maybe it would be OK for you.

I don't really like the EF coat, but then again I'm not fond of collarless coats. It almost looks like a cardigan, KWIM?

ETA: added a find for you. My black coat is a very similar shape and style to this one and I find it super versatile. It's plain enough to not compete with my handknits, but the asymmetrical closure is interesting enough to not be boring. (Mine has some pleating at the closure as well.)

I don't think the asymmetrical coat would date quickly. It looks very arty, and pieces like that have a really long style longevity. My question is more about how it would pair with the style of the hats. It might be too big a statement on its own and not look great with hats -- although to some extent that might depend on the style of your hats, as well!

The EF for some reason appeals to me less. I don't know why. Perhaps if I saw it in person I would feel differently. I know how lovely her fabrics usually are.

I collected a few other options -- check Angie's blog post today, too, for some. It's tough to gauge the weight of all of these online but sometimes you can take an educated guess.

I'm wanting a casual but not sporty, light to medium weight coat in black, just so I can wear some hats I have! My black coat has a hood and looks weird with hats, plus it's heavy weight. My other coats is purple...the hats are red and leopard.

Is it ridiculous to buy a coat just because I want to wear my hats? I do have a black dressy coat they work with, but I want to wear them more. I guess that's the second topic.

For these coats, I'm wondering if the asymmetrical one would date quickly and also wondering how it would look worn open. The EF is more classic, without being the overly classic/peacoat type that doesn't appeal to me. But $$$.

So the third topic I guess is, seen anything similar for less?!

http://www.garnethill.com/eile.....-jackets/3

http://www.garnethill.com/asym.....38;defattr

ETA: Here are the hats I'm talking about. Not really the kind of hats that are trendy though...not like Alaskagirl's and Diana's knit kind. Dated, or classic quirky? I have a few more cloche type and a few more soft floppy type. So, what kind of coat for these? Which of all those Finds above or what I linked would go well? Or should I just save them for wearing with the more formal coat I already have because they are too different from the trendy ones to need regular outings?!
