Brianna, the first two months are definitely the most shower challenging times but it sounds like you are enjoying every second. I've always loved wearing my babies too. Your daughter is now your best accessory! You are doing great with your MOTG style and it is wonderful to see you so glowing.

Thank you, everyone--it's so fun and encouraging to hear your thoughts and stories of having newborns of your own. Hannah, it's su true that a carrier (not to mention the baby's body heat) function as a clothing layer--I've found myself dressing much more lightly because of that.

I do have a ring sling but it doesn't have a long tail--it's padded and I haven't gotten around to trying it out yet because the pouch sling I have is so much simpler. I have a friend who might be lending me one, though, so I'll see if that helps with the potential exposure issues Camis definitely help too--I have some really good ones from Diivine Modestees that work well.

Chris & Debora, I like the shoes you suggested! I'll check into them. The Lands' End ones especially look like they would work well for light hikes, too.

Brianna, you and Chickadee are so sweet!

I used wrap-type and ring slings all the time with my kids when they were babies. What I found out is that the sling itself functions as another clothing layer for you and for the baby, so you both need to dress lighter than you would if you were using a stroller. This is especially true for the wrap-type sling.

OK, I must get back to work now - look at your sweet pictures makes me want another baby (and I certainly do not plan that!). Sending virtual hugs to you and your adorable daughter.

Brianna - You look so great! I wore my daughter in the ergo or a sling almost all the time when she was little, and looking at your pictures does make me realize how quickly that time passes. I also recall wearing yoga pants for the first few months.... It does feel so much better, though, to take a shower and get ready.

Thanks for posting your thoughts, Brianna. It does bring back memories (how quickly they fade!) and I have to say, you are a very stylish new mom. It definitely does help to get dressed in the morning and not hang out all days in PJs or sweats.

I too was a big fan of slings and wraps. One of the things I discovered was I need longer shirts, because they tend to ride up in a wrap. So I wore shirts from Shade and Modbe (this was before longer shirts became more popular), and underneath those shirts I'd wear a cami. Great sling coverage, and also nursing coverage, since I could push up the top layer, and pull down the top of the cami, and voila -- discreet nursing, doable in a babycarrier.

For shoes, have you considered some sporty Mary Janes, such as those by Nike and Privo?

Congratulations on your baby! How wonderful! And you are such a stylish mom!

I use slings too, not often any more because they are a bit older, but constantly in their early months. Do you have a ring sling? I had the same modesty issue due to the weight of the sling, but I just used the loose end of the sling to tuck in and cover cleavage etc. For me, that worked better than modifying my wardrobe, but that is because I look awful in high necklines.
I am completely with you on the showering and getting yourself ready every day - it makes such a difference! Just don't beat yourself up if you do find yourself in your pajamas all day once in a while - it happens, just like teething happens I think it's okay as long as it doesn't become a habit.

I found a few more minutes to sit down and view your pictures. Just wanted to add that you and your new daughter are beautiful! You are one stylish mom!

Enjoy your outings with your daughter. Comfortable shoes will certainly add to that. How about checking out Land's End for their Terrain Janes or Terrain Ballets? They may be more comfortable than ballet flats but may still look a little too much like gear for you. I have many fond memories of taking my babies for long walks in their strollers.

awww! This brings back such sweet memories. Laura is right, enjoy this time. It is so fleeting and precious. My oldest little chickadee is already out of the nest and on her own and I miss her so much.

I think it does help to shower and put on makeup every day but don't beat yourself up if it's 3:00 in the afternoon and you haven't showered yet. The baby will take up most of your time in these early months and it will get easier.

Congratulations on your little one and thanks for sharing with us. I look forward to hearing more about her.

I think you are doing admirably! I love the "shower pact".

I looked ahead at your other three outfits - your church outfit with white top and wide leg jeans is simple and perfect. Love the red necklace!

I would imagine as the baby - adorable by the way - gets bigger your needs will shift a bit so adapting temporarily is reasonable and the only way to maintain sanity. She won't be in the sling for too long so washing those same higher necked ts more often might do?

Plus, I'd wear all the necklaces you can now. When they hit toddler/grab everything stage the last thing you want is a necklace in my memory.
But then that stage passes quickly as well.

As for comfy shoes - I am not a mail order type so I'd look for a cute Puma or Nike gear style at a sport store. The big athletic brands have stylish gear type shoes.

Here's an example of a Puma - maybe not the one you would like but I tried this style on and it was comfy.

As the Johnson & Johnson ads say, "babies change everything."

Thanks for sharing your experiences from the early week's of your daughter's life. Maybe you should print this post out so you can remember it. It's such a precious, fleeting, crazy time. Enjoy :)

p.s. Shopping is going to be tough for a while. My only advice is to order online if possible to save the stress! Only order from retailers you know well so you can get the sizes right and avoid having to make returns. You mentioned cotton cardis -- JCrew is great for those, but I don't know what to advise because of Canada.

I'm sitting here with my baby in a red cotton sling, wearing an olive green tank top, grey sweat pants, pink Haflinger slippers and a black newsboy cap over my morning bedhead--I had to run down to retrieve last night's laundry from the laundry room. The Chickadee's been fussy this morning (gas) so I haven't had a chance to shower yet. I did manage breakfast, thank goodness--I don't do well when I don't eat!

I've been thinking on and off about what works for me and what doesn't in my new life as a mom and I thought I'd share a bit.

I'm very fond of "wearing" my baby in carriers like slings and wraps. I find that because of this, it doesn't make sense to wear tops with a lot of detail or ornamentation (ruffles, collars, etc). They just bunch up and get wrinked if I put on a carrier. Also, I need to wear higher necklines. The weight of the Chickadee on my chest or over my shoulder or whatever tugs down my necklines, which means my bra shows if the neckline is low (IE my J. Crew scoopneck tees).

I don't have room in my apartment to have laundry drying racks set up most of the time like I used to, because I know have a bassinet, a large dresser (used as a changing table) and other baby accoutrements taking up space. I also don't have as much time for laundry and I do a LOT of baby laundry. And I get spit up on regularly. This means I'm almost entirely sticking to clothes that can be machine washed AND machine dried (with the exception of jeans--I know better than to machine dry those!). I've actually split my closet into machine wash-and-dry clothes and clothes that require more attention (hand washing, hang-to-dry, ironing required). I think I might actually swap and/or consign a good chunk of those clothes, keeping only the most versatile and wonderful items. They just don't suit my life now. So, I'm after very affordable, easy-care, simple but attractive tops and dresses for spring and summer. Let me know if you find any!

That said, I've found it's vital for me to shower, put on makeup, style my hair, and wear clean, reasonably attractive clothes every day. It helps me feel human and sane even though my life is so different now--it's kind of a touchstone. If take 10 minutes to put on mascara and brow colour, blow dry my hair, and throw on some dark denim clams, a bright tee, a cardi, and some hoop earrings, I feel a zillion times better and more ready to enjoy the day. My husband and I made a pact the day we picked up the Chickadee that no matter what, we would both always get to shower every day! I've heard too many stories of new moms not showering for days and hanging around in spit-up-on PJs. I don't judge anyone who finds themself in that position, but I know it would make me feel terrible. So far, so good.

Almost all of my exercise now consists of long walks with the Chickadee in a carrier or her stroller. The weather's getting warm and I've found my ballet flats--even my Privos with insoles and heel grips--aren't quite up to the task. I want something that feels like a sneaker but that doesn't look like gear. It doesn't have to be as pretty or refined as a true ballet flat, but I don't want to go the route of Merrills or something. I ordered the Naot Valerie sandals in Lead and the Me Too Kali thong sandals in champagne that I posted a while ago on another thread, and I'm hoping that will take care of my sandal needs, at least.

I really need a lightweight summer cardigan or two that are not black, but shopping is suddenly a whole other ball game! I either need to leave the Chickadee at home with Mike or shop with another person so someone can watch her while I try things on. No more popping over to the consignment store around the block on my lunch break. Hmm. I wish more Canadian retailers provided online shopping!

The strangest little things change with a baby. For example, most of my PJs are satiny. The problem is that when I prop the Chickadee on my lap and in the crook of my arm to feed her at night, she slips around on the smooth fabric! So I've ordered some cotton PJ pants and am on the hunt for inexpensive camis and a cotton or terry robe to wear with them. Crazy.

Baby girl finally fell asleep, so it's time for a shower. Here are a few posts with some recent outfits in them:
