Ingunn, I have decided that this year I am going to try to use my gut more when I purchase things. I am a big thinker too and can enjoy trying to "figure the puzzle out." So you won't be the only one trying to be more relaxed and intuitive with purchases this year. :^)

Ingunn, think of purchasing your next season of wardrobe items as more of a relaxed beach holiday, instead of a sight seeing city hustle and bustle. There is some analysis. But it's less planned and more spontaneous.

And for the record, I am much more of a sight seeing city hustle and bustle type too. I find beach holidays stressful. But once I really switch off and make a point of RELAXING, I love those types of holidays just as much.

Make sense?

Oh that's interesting … the definition of simple. I am most likely thinking of it as a more classic version of minimal. Because minimal, to me, implies a more avant garde style sensibility.

cjh, I think you are spot on with most of your analysis. Wow! I haven't been able to put this into words myself.

I do like grey, and have several grey tops like t-shirts, v-neck sweater and hoodie. They are a cooler grey, though. I like these trousers, but not with blazers because I feel too masculine in that. Touché! Thank you! I've never understood why before, because I love blazers in general. I do like the outfits I've shown here, and will be wearing the trousers with sweaters for the remains of the winter. In Spring, I might pair it with my denim jacket or leather moto, and probably Chucks sometimes. That is a lot more to my liking. I think the #5 pants are good placeholders until I find a patterned pair in a more exciting/updated style, and I'm probably keeping them for now. You're right about this, too:)

Have not read all the comments above, but taking a stab at the trouser analysis. IMO, the gray pants are quite light for you and are the one element in all these photos that "is not like the others". Except for the white jeans and crisp white shirt, most of your other outfits are low contrast, and darker over all from one end to the other. Nothing else you wear is really gray, either. Is gray a color you like, especially this light gray?

Personally I have a similar issue with some very nice, well fitting, light taupey tan slacks of mine: too light for the rest of my outfits and just a touch on the masculine side - and I'm not even sure why I feel this way. Possibly because when I pair them with denim and/or navy, I feel like a preppy guy, and when with purples, teals or brights, like I just couldn't figure out what to wear on the bottom, and with greens, just not good. ?? I feel I'd rather look more cohesive (same situation with your multiple outer layers which you feel are "too much"??). I'm much happier when I wear dark gray, black/gray birdseye weave, black or black/gray tweedy pants, when not wearing jeans, or corduroys for this cold winter.

And IMO, the gray pants are not as feminine looking as the darker ones in #5. The pants in #5 are a really good ingredient in the outfits you've shown, a bit of subtle print mixing, enough interest to not fade away like plain black or navy slacks might do, but not flashy or attention diverting. That might just be me, but something to think about?

I'm very grateful that you found time to comment and answer my myriad of questions, Gigi, Sarah and Ramya. You've all helped me see a few things in a different light. Sarah, your suggestion is spot on. I have few tops and in particular a lack in footwear that I like for my grey trousers. I still like them, and have no intention of donating them. My guess is that when the weather warms up and I can start wearing lighter shoes, I'm going to find more use for it.

Angie, you are one in a million. I must admit that at first, when I read your challenge, I was baffled. Frankly, an intuitive approach to this is hard for me because I so enjoy thinking about the possibilities. On the other side I can get so tired from all this thinking, and it sounds in fact appealing to let it flow a bit for a while. I do in particular enjoy the mixing and matching, but that won't have to go, does it?

Last year I planned my outfits in detail before each new week. I don't do that anymore - not since early Autumn, I think. It started to become tedious, and I din't need to anymore. The next step is probably to let go a little more and let chance rule also with the next acquisitions. It sounds intriguing to just make outfits as I go and then let you and the fabbers analyze them instead:)

I think I got more than I asked for this time, but I'm all the wiser and it's definitely all good fun.

Your analytical wardrobe skills are so, so, SO fine tuned, Ingunn. Faultless. You won't go wrong with a much more intuitive process. Can you follow your heart without following your head with your next season of wardrobe purchases? For most, that's the only way they shop - which often leads to a dysfunctional wardrobe - and the reason I have a job. (Not always though. Some are able to create a functional wardrobe completely intuitively). For you, it's harder to turn off the analysis. At least - that's my impression. The analysis and puzzle part of your wardrobe is what makes it a fun style journey. Is that accurate? Do correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't want to take away your fun, Ingunn. Not at all. I shared the idea because you might find the challenge fun too. Whichever way you want to go is perfect. xo

I have come back to look at your pictures 3 times Ingunn. But you know I am at a total loss for what to say? I think you look fantastic in all of these, even the outwear. The gray pants in #1 are espacially good. I do wonder if maybe Angie has hit on something... maybe you just arent drawn to the look. Or one thing I find for myself is that separates must be very similar toned OR quite a contrast, no low contrast looks that arent a column of color. I have a hard time with low contrast pairings. Do you? Perhaps you dont have as many tops that provide an amount of contrast you like with these?

#1:Grey pant fits awesome, but looks light weight. So the color and fabric may be the reason you skip wearing them.
#2: Oh yes M'am :)
#3: You can :). But I donot like volume on my sleeves personally. I have enough mass on my hand without external help :D. So it may irritate you with toppers which is a sad necessity usually for us :(.
#4: Business casual is your thing Ingunn and no 1 does it like you :)
#5:They look good on you. Grey pants fit you better but if you love something and it looks good why not wear it :)
#6: Yup I see this getting lots of love :)
#7: Nothing sad about it and you look good in them. I love the beanies. (P.S: I am learning to knit and I hope to make few of these;))

I should have read this thread before commenting on "playful" in the other thread! I see now what you mean by "playful." I did miss the boat on that :^) .

It sounds like you know yourself pretty well. I would be bored with a 30-item wardrobe also. And 30 items does not mean the same thing when you have four seasons vs. when you have only, say, two.

As for your questions:

#1: I liked the pants. I was wondering (as were others) whether they were just not warm enough. They look like a pretty lightweight fabrication.

#2: I liked the turtleneck dress with the toppers, but I didn't care for it with the sweaters.

#3: I thought the blouse looked great in all the outfits, even the one where it peeked out quite a bit beneath the sweater, which surprised me. That type of layering seems to be on trend right now.

#4: These pix make me think that I need to up my accessories game! I have very few, but you are right that they can really change up a look. I was just reading in a book how accessories are the key to having a successful wardrobe if it's going to be on the small side (which mine is).

#5: I didn't see anything that great about the pants. They were just kind of there. Since you have an abundance of clothes, I would get rid of them.

#6: I loved all the incarnations of the layered dress here.

#7: You look way better than I do in this weather! You can hardly see me at all (just a bit of my face!), since I'm so bundled up!

I think that your outfits all match your style goals, though I do wonder a bit about the blush thrifted blouse in this respect. The blouse is quite complex, with lots going on--the intricate details, the silhouette, and even what appears to be a lustrous texture. But if you love the blouse, you want to trust your heart, no matter what your predetermined style moniker is. :^)

Well now my head is spinning. You've all given me a lot to think about, and I hope you will be interested in discussing with me further.

Angie, thank you for challenging me. I admit I find that approach really challenging! I'm definitely willing to give it a try, though, but I don't quite see how. Merely documenting what I do/buy? Outfits?

About the pants: I'm wearing them today. I do like light grey, but I have a limited selection of footwear for these pants, particularly on snowy days. I think that is part of the reason. I also think that they fit me better now that I've lost the few pounds that I gained over the last year (I bought these a year ago). Finally, I prefer the lighter colors on top, but that is not the main reason.

Denise, I'm very grateful for your thorough analysis. It must have taken you a while. I trust your judgement completely, and it is so interesting to try and see what you see in my outfits. I learned quite a lot from it. I do think, though, that we don't interpret "simple" in the same way. Let's have a discussion about this in another thread. That will be very enlightening for me, I'm sure.

Really interesting evaluation Denise - My favourite of all the outfits in terms of "fit" for Ingunn's style descriptors was the first outfit in #4 - modern classic, simple & the beret/hat adds a playful element. The second one is not as simple imo. The brown shoes & the necklace take away from that feel for me. Although not always easy, I agree simple & playful can co-exist but they have to be minor details not the major points of interest.

Hello Ingunn --
I decided to look at everything with this in mind: is it "Simple, Playful Modern Classic?"
1 -- Middle outfit #2 fits this descriptor, I think because the tonal color approach simplifies. The belt is not simple and the pants with their slouchy drape don't read as simple but when you combine them with tonal colors it comes off as clean and simple.
2 -- Outfits 1, 2 and 5 fit the descriptor. The others are more complex.
3 -- Outfit #2 fits the descriptor. While the others have more of a playful thing going on, I prefer the second one for you.
4 -- Both of these are the epitome of your style descriptor. The look is elegant and modern and very "you." Bravo I say.
5 -- The first three outfits fit the descriptor. I like these pants on you. They look modern to me, not dated, and since classic is part of your descriptor, they are perfect. The last two outfits are more playful. The more I think about it, is "playful" at odds with "simple" as a style goal? Perhaps it can work but then the playful element needs to stand alone with the rest of the outfit being quite minimal. Such as the pink balloon sleeve blouse worn with the navy pants, no contrasting belt or shoes.
6 -- The patterned tights are playful but not simple. The last outfit best delivers on your style descriptor because the patterned tights are combined with very much simplicity elsewhere.
7 -- The necessity of layering for warmth makes me not want to evaluate these outfits against your style descriptor goal. However, if you really want to take it seriously, you could stick to tonal colors or one uniform color to simplify the look.

I am so impressed by your wardrobe remixing abilities. I really love your suit and how you wear it with a sweater in #4. But I am totally intrigued by Angie's idea - your skills are so refined now (none of these outfits is a miss) it would be interesting to let your unconscious mind take over. Of course that is what the thrift store is for!

I've come back to this after reading & thinking about it for a while. I had lots to say but as usual Angie has "got" it. A brilliant idea. Why don't you just try on LOTS of new, good quality, clothes & see how you feel in them? No need to have any intention of buying - just to get an idea of what your heart loves.

I wonder whether you actually like light grey, Ingunn? That could be the reason you don't wear those killer trousers in #1.

Great outfits as always!
I love the pants in #1 and can't think of why you don't wear them. Do you have any clues? Are you happy with the length? Are they uncomfortable in some way?
The navy dress layers better than the striped dress. The striped looks better with the simple jackets.

Not a fan of the boxy jacket with the turtleneck. Did you see Thistle's post with her green jacket? Either the collar is dated, or it wants a more open neckline the top--mild scoop neck or something.
Blue suit is fabuloso.
Quirky blouse is still a keeper, I think--keeping the rest of the outfit simple and classic.

I love these outfits. I feel they're quite a new direction or a superb good tweak to keep things in the moment. This may be my favourite year of yours yet. It maybe the tapered pants in #1 (and the fab navy suit) that's doing it for me. I think you have more combos in there too, esp. with the yellow sweater.

Ingunn -- I enjoy reading your wardrobe analyses as they have forced me to take a closer look at some of my own wardrobe concerns. Thanks! I am sort of a maximalist (when it comes to my closet) and, like you, would be totally bored with only 30 pieces. But it is always a good idea to periodically cull and evaluate the versatility of individual pieces so the collection does not become overwhelming.

For what it is worth, here are my thoughts:
#1 -- Those pants are gorgeous on you. They look especially fab worn with the light colored footwear in the second shot. Keep and wear!
#2 -- Totally LOVE what you've done to layer this dress. Brilliant! You've demonstrated how versatile this piece is and it deserves to keep a place in your closet.
#3 -- I think this blouse, as a stand-alone piece, is simply gorgeous. The color is so lovely on you. But it does not seem to play well with layering pieces due to the romantic sleeves. It might be what I call a "closet diva". In my opinion, one or two of those pieces are fine (and fun to have)… but you cannot have a whole closet of them. Keep if you want a fun "diva"… or pass along if you do not have the room.
#4 -- Gah! -- That suit is STUNNING!!! So are the accessories. Keep!!!!!
#5 -- I can see why you are drawn to the pattern on these… but I think #1 is a better look and fit.
#6 -- Another lovely and versatile dress -- layers so well but probably looks fab on its own. Definite keep in my book.
#7 -- Don't be so hard on yourself. You look spectacular in your winter garb. Gosh -- you should see my puffer… makes me look like the Michelin Man! You, on the other hand, look sleek and chic… and weather appropriate.

Thanks so much for this post. I love your pictures and feel so inspired when I look at them.
I think everything works very well. Perhaps you are bored of the #1 pants and they just need to take a break for a wee bit.
The dress can indeed be layered.
The winter wear is fantastic. Mine is no where near as lovely - and I have resorted to large fluffy boots to combat the polar vortexes.

I loved reading this post! Wardrobe building ones are my favourites, especially when they're illustrated.

I too would get bored with only 30 pieces & don't like culling for the sake of culling, although I suspect my wardrobe is far larger than yours. I let myself start thrifting again this month & I've already brought in several new pieces (although I'm following 1 in, 1 out, so no wardrobe growth at least), so clearly I either need to raise my standards or stay away from thrift stores if I don't want new acquisitions. That's something I'll have to think about more in the next couple of months! Anyway, I've been musing quite a bit about consumption vs creation and style vs shopping since I joined the forum; I need to type out my thoughts one of these days. But just wanted to say, I know where you're coming from.

On to your questions!

I love your trouser collection in general, and I especially love the grey ones in your first picture. All of those potential outfits look like playful modern classic to me. The ones in 5 have a nice pattern (and I actually love that colour, hehe), but the lines don't look as nice as the trousers in 1. If you're not lacking for similar trousers, I'd put those in a holding zone and see if you ever reach for them.

I love the striped dress with the jackets! With the sweaters, I feel like there's something a bit off at the sweater hemline & belt area, but that could just be the photos. And I love all of the navy dress remixes.

Your outerwear looks very nice and stylish, as well as warm.

(Picking up where I left earlier)

Suz, I'm sure you will find your navy suit this year, and it will become a wardrobe workhorse for you I'm sure. I'm so glad I bought mine, and I predict I'l be wearing the heck out of it this year. My next secret goal is a pinstripe suit - not a need at all, but a definite want.

Lisa, I like the brown booties a lot with my whet jeans, but I have stone suede booties too, for Spring. As long as the dark color is repeated, you can add any color, I think. I was thinking the turtleneck+v-neck mix wouldn't be everybody's cup to tea. I suppose a scarf could remedy that if needed.

Thank you, Emily! My main issue with my hair is that my curls are a lot less springy now, and I probably need a different haircut because as it is now, I have to wash it almost every day to keep up. Day 2 is only sloppy waves. The thing is, I kind of like the length I already have and I don't want short hair.

Missey, you are right, sleek is never warm enough in Oslo either, except for the beginning and the end of the cold season. Thank your for your kind words!

I'll do my best, Ramya dear! No, I'm not ironing my hair, but today I tried to give it a blow out as an experiment. Not very successful, I'm afraid, so I'll stick with airdrying as usual.

Suz, I think we are at the same wavelength here. A very large wardrobe is stressful to me, but a too small selection is boring. I doubt I ever will find my perfect uniforms, I like to experiment too much for that. But I aim for honing a few go-to formulas to simplify a little.

Catnip, I have several other pants in the same style as #5, so this is probably why I'm not wearing them as often, they have competition. Plus, they are brownish grey, which isn't a color I particularly like. And yes, the blush blouse needs shorter sleeves. I will get it done. You are also correct about dark coats and sunglasses, that's not for me in Winter. I would feel funny!

deb, I don't know what to do with my hair yet. It might not be too much that's needed, but I dislike the structure my hair has right now and consider having more layers or something.
