I can be a purposeful impulse shopper in that I go to the store for a needed item A and come home with item A as well as a few other items (say, items D, F, and G) that were further down my list but were too pretty to pass up. It's something I'm working on. It doesn't help that my sense of style is evolving and I've lost weight, so my clothes don't fit and look like they used to.

So interesting to hear everyone's thoughts. And especially how much of an impact the online world has had on shopping habits. I am absolutely proof of this as well. Online sales/forums and having my own blog have for sure been impactful

Prior to this year, I had spent a number of years ignoring how I looked, wearing the same pair of jeans or yoga pants and boring tees. Now that I am having fun with clothes, I can be like a kid in a candy store when I go shopping. It's hard not to want to buy anything that looks good on me! But I have also identified "wardrobe holes", and I am trying to keep those in mind. Especially because I am realizing that $20-$30 impulse buys quickly add up to the amount I COULD use to invest in the bigger-ticket items I really need. So, for example, yesterday I tried on a sweater that looked adorable, and was only $30. But I know I've been looking for a great pair of boots, which will get a lot of wear. So I admitted that I didn't want/need the sweater enough to justify spending $30 that could go towards boots.
I find this forum, fashion blogs, and Pinterest have helped me prioritize my fashion wish list. I scan through my "My Style" board (where I pin outfits or items I love) and look for repetition. For example, I posted enough outfits that included a denim button-down shirt to realize it made sense for me to buy one. Same with booties. I see lots of outfits I'd wear them with, so I know they're a good investment.

Angie has written many blog posts about this. I tend to be very focused on what I'm looking for, but I'm always open to something wonderful that I didn't plan on buying. I'm so particular though that this doesn't happen that often anymore. Like some of the others, I'm finding that online shopping can be great when you're looking for something very specific.

I think of my shopping, i.e. wardrobe, evolution as moving up a pyramid, something like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. With a very low income, and then as plus-sized I've spent more years than I would have liked to on the bottom two levels :-/

Self-actualization: Does it fit into my current wardrobe concept (now that I have one!) Does it speak well about me/my style? Is it a '10'?
Esteem: Is it flattering in fit and color?
Love/Belonging: Will my friends/family/partner like it?
Safety: Can I afford it? Does it cover what it needs to? Is it climate appropriate?
Physiological: Can I fit into it? To quote Gilda Radner, "I base most of my fashion taste on what doesn't itch."

I don;t like shopping, so I do 95% of it online. This tends to lead to a very focused shopping experience. Except for when I get sidetracked by Angie recommendations or recommendations from other fabbers

Right after posting my last reply, I thought of two times in the last couple months when I talked myself out of buying something I gravitated toward, because it wasn't the current wardrobe hole. In both cases, I've regretted that I didn't purchase and in hindsight have thought of several opportunities when I could have worn the item.

No matter what, we'll make mistakes. But I'd rather err on the side of not buying than overbuying.

Since reading YLF, I'm a much more purposeful shopper. I used to just pick out what I liked and ended up with a lot of wardrobe holes. Now I'm trying to prioritize my greatest needs and shop specifically for those. (Of course, as a newbie to this process, it seems like I have an overwhelming number of wardrobe "needs!")

When shopping, though, I hold off on actually buying until I find something I truly love to fill the current hole/need. So I guess I do a combination.

I usually have a very specific idea for what I want to add to my wardrobe. I do some online research to see what's available, then go in person to try on. If it's what I want, I buy. Otherwise, I wait for the right thing or make it myself.

Whenever I bought things on a whim, they never really worked for me. They were the ones that ended up in the Goodwill pile. So now I spend a little time upfront on planning to ensure wardrobe happiness.

It's funny - when I try to be a purposeful shopper, looking for a specific item to fill out my wardrobe or outfit, I can never seem to find it! So now I tend to buy all my basics online, and special items that catch my eye when I'm shopping in person. That way I know that I will have all my bases covered

I tend to be a very purposeful shopper. I think about what I need (wardrobe holes), and when I see something that will fill a hole, I ask myself whether it will work with my other wardrobe items in terms of color and fit. However, sometimes, if I see something that really catches my eye, I'll buy it even if it doesn't go with my current style or wardrobe colors, as long as I know that I can build an outfit around it. I have found as I look back on my purchases that those "irrational" purchases are the ones that give me the highest happiness quotient.

I tend to be too much in my head when I shop, so if something really grabs my heart, I try to pay more attention now. So it sounds like I am the opposite of you! :^)
