I have a fair amount of fine jewelry. Looking at the style of the ring ( with the square sides) I think it would be near impossible to size up without losing the integrity and still finding a cushioning fit. I second the idea of wearing it on a chain: a talisman of your dear aunt close to your heart.

Janet and Denise, what is it with the tiny fingers of the previous generation? At the same weight, my mom's fingers are 4 sizes smaller than mine! And my aunt was 4 inches taller and overweight yet wore this ring on her ring finger! Maybe fingers are getting bigger just as feet are.

I agree with all the advice to ask a reputable jeweler. Resizing can be tricky, but the rings I've declined to have resized almost always had either a delicate stone like opal, or a band that was already quite thin to begin with (and therefore not enough metal to stretch out into a larger size). This was an issue for me for most of my mom's rings. I have delicate fingers, but hers were teeny tiny!

Either way, I really hope you can find a way to wear and enjoy the ring. The color is beautiful. I'm sorry for your loss.

I think resizing is a good idea so you can wear it and enjoy it now. Also, if you lost weight in the future and it was too big for your pinkie then you could just wear it on a bigger finger.

Please resize the ring. I am not too much heavier than I was in my 30s; from 5 to at the most 10 lb more now. However most of my rings are now too tight. (Can 10 lb make that big a difference?) It could be due to inflammation that comes with aging. I did a search and it seems that our joints get larger with age due to arthritis etc whether we suffer painful symptoms or not. So it could be your knuckle but not necessarily the rest of your hand that will no longer fit the ring.

Your aunt had tiny hands. I'd resize it for the finger you want to wear it on, like your ring or middle finger.

Speaking of inflammation, I've read that eating foods that reduce inflammation (o.j., salmon, nuts as opposed to processed foods) can keep you healthier. Apparently bodily inflammation is a precursor to all sorts of dangerous diseases e.g. diabetes and heart disease.

Resize the ring if a reputable jeweler says its possible. I had to resize my wedding set. Jewelry was made to be worn and enjoyed -- especially if it's your favorite color. I am sure your aunt would be MUCH happier if you wore it instead of taking it out once a year and sighing "I'll wear it when I loose the weight"... Tomorrow is not promised.

I second Diana's suggestion to talk to someone who knows what they are doing first. In the excitement of engagement ring shopping, I didn't notice the fit of my ring and needed to get it sized down after the fact. First the stone came loose, then the prongs became a bit misshapen when they tightened them back up, and then they had to basically remake the prongs... I don't know how the lapis is attached to your ring, but it's better to ask before than after. :T

What a lovely memento! I think a consultation would be a great idea. See what a jeweler says about possibilities and costs.

Both options are good ones and definitely find out if resizing will compromise the ring at all.

If it were me and it was safe to do so, I would resize and wear it.

To be fair, most of the warnings I have read had to do with rings with stones. Basically a change in size changes the curvature of the ring which can cause the stones to pop out (especially if you're making the ring smaller). Since the lapis bits on your ring are on the flat part, it might be ok. But ask a reputable jeweler.

Resizing rings is a tricky proposition, and it can get expensive. I'd take it to a jeweler and get a quote and an explanation of what needs to be done. Your ring looks like a broad band, which could be narrowed a bit to make the circumference larger without loss of structural integrity, but I'm not an expert.

Would you consider putting it on a chain and wearing it as a pendant?

That's not a bad idea, Caro. Wearing rings can be hard because the swelling goes up and down.

My aunt was my best friend, but she died too soon. Her daughters allowed me to pick out this rose gold and lapis ring from her things. At the time it fit well as a pinky ring. It no longer fits, partly due to weight gain and partly due to swelling. It goes about 3/4 of the way down my pinkie. I've wondered about resizing but am very hesitant to do so. It's the old "I'll lose the weight" thing.

I have learned with my clothing to dress the body I have, but it's harder for me to do with this ring. I want it to be the same as when my aunt wore it.

And yes, lapis blue is my favorite color.

Any thoughts? Thank you.
