I like florals, even tiny or extra-large ones. But I do not want to buy very large florals without trying them on and seeing where the big flowers land. Sometimes they can look artistic, but sometimes they can look odd or unflattering.

Peri, that is a beautiful top. Too bad it didn't work out. I have never worn florals or if I did it was for a short time. I rarely wear patterns except for plaids and stripes. I have one plaid shirt and one striped shirt. I do have a skirt with swirls on it, but that is several years old.

I've always been attracted to floral patterns, but with certain caveats. The small-scale Laura Ashleyesque floral patterns are too twee for my style. No florals in cool, muted, or baby nursery pastel tones. My preferred floral patterns are abstract and dark or tropical, warm, and bright. Interestingly, I haven't added any florals to my wardrobe in the past three years with the exception of a handbag.

I remember reading one of the fashion blogger' post about dressing for body and dressing for the face. The idea was that oval or slightly angular face on the body with soft curves will benefit from less sweet styling - not much of floral print let's say - and will look more harmonious all together. I'll try to find the link - I may remember it incorrectly.

Haven't found my old link but found similar ones about considering the shape of face, features like eyes, lips, general energy of the person taken into account when dressing up ( besides body shape )

The theory about prints somehow echoing characteristics of the wearer is interesting, but I enjoy playing *against* my body type. Is it rebelliousness? Perhaps. Denial? Maybe it was when I was younger. LOL. But I’ve always said there is not a single straight line on my body, so in theory stripes and more “masculine” prints shouldn’t work, but I don’t see a big disconnect when I wear them, and I enjoy the vibe. I don’t always want to play up or play into the hyperfeminine shape I’ve always had (even when I was very slim, I was never straight). Sometimes florals + curves just feel too obvious and too overtly feminine for my taste, since I prefer to add a bit of tension to my style.

So interesting! Although I recommended Lisa avoid florals because of how they made her feel, I am not against florals and wear them myself. Several of my tops are actually ditsy florals but the color story and specific pattern does not feel twee to me. I also like some abstact florals the pattern on the top you linked looks great. I do think patterns and prints are very specific to the person - both their features and their taste, as many mentioned above.

Carla, Ophelia, Suz, Slim Cat...interesting! I hadn't heard that but I confess to being curvy and had curly hair my whole life until it decided to go limp and thin to celebrate aging. Now I keep forcing it to curl with a curling iron. So that idea does make a kind of sense when I think about who likes what. And Ophelia, I don't usually think of florals as sweet either.

Hmm, I've not read LJP's post yet, but I am a floral person, I think, and certainly darks, like you mention.

I don't know why they would be hard for people to wear, but they do have a stronger connotation (girly, garden, etc.) than polka dots or stripes. Must be one of those "am I wearing the item, or is the item wearing me" feelings. I feel that sometimes, but not in florals.

I love a lot of florals but don’t wear them as often as I used to. I’ve become even pickier about them over the years.

I’ve recently become a bit fixated on a floral shirt I tried on — it’s got a relaxed boho-ish vibe and could be good for summer even though it’s long-sleeved since it’s very light and breezy. It was widely spaced blue embroidered flowers on a white background, so my most commonly worn summer color palette (first find below).

But otherwise when I look through my purchases from the past year, solids reign, with stripes a second place, and a smattering of plaid and checks, plus an argyle, an abstract (that loosely looks floral), and one other embroidered floral — a Scotch & Soda shirt I picked up at the Rack and has been in warm-weather high rotation since.

The Dries orchid top is the most truly floral item I’ve bought in a long time. I got it in a really good sale, and it’s a very summery item, but the unique print and black and white make it a favorite.

I still have some older florals that I enjoy, but I have to pay attention to the details that make it wearable for me.

I really like the print on that Allsaints tee, but I hear you on the quality of the print. That would bother me too. I hope you find another that works for you!

I'm often drawn to Allsaints pieces too! I've been moving away from a lot of prints these days, excepting skirts, in favor of more texture.
"Busy" patterns (pattern within pattern without much blank space) work best for me, so florals mixed in with paisleys or such. 2 of my skirts are ditsy florals, but they're pretty dark (one red one green) and low value contrast.
Most of my patterns have curved lines, which go with my curvy shape, but I do have one striped top that works (black with thin white stripes).

Yep, florals certainly can be tricky, and maybe it is the hair or a person's body frame that helps a pattern harmonize better. I know that stripes and polka dots usually work much better on me, but I do enjoy the occasional floral when the mood strikes. Its mostly a summertime thing but I can be rather picky about it all. I do like wearing certain ditsy prints (2- 3 colours max) but I'm not as keen on the bigger florals, I feel a bit overwhelmed in them. I've also tried a few dark florals but they just aren't me either. It's all so very personal isn't it?

"patterns that echo something about themselves, hair type, body shape"- is so true for me - thank you @ophelia! My straight body without curves or long hair, or some more feminine features is opposite to the sweetness of pure floral pattern. Some angular, geometric print could actually look better on my body ( at least to my eye ). I do like All Saints and that particular top -it just doesn't like it back - lol .

Ophelia, I think in that style bible Jaime has referred us to (The Triumph of Individual Style) they talk about exactly what you say here. Patterns generally feel best to us. if they reflect something about our ffeatures or body type. Though I don't know how that relates to Angie's preference for large scale abstract florals -- since she is small framed and not abstracted, LOL. :)

For myself, it makes a lot of sense -- my facial bone structure is angular (though my features are not) and my hair, when short, is also quite straight (it is wavy if longer but I never wear it that way) -- so stripes/ checks and other geometrics are harmonious.

Peri, I was wondering about your hair and then read Carla's post. Somewhere in the distant past, I read that people are often attracted to patterns that echo something about themselves, hair type, body shape and/or face lines, and it certainly is the case for me. My hair and shape are curly and curvy, and I had to stretch to wear stripes and plaids and geometric designs.
I'll wear all the florals in all the colors. Always loved them and probably always will. For some reason, maybe I was raised under a rock, I don't have associations that others do with prints or with colors as twee or sweet (and I'm not exactly sweet, ha). To me, florals are flowers. I like flowers. Simple minded I guess, lol. I do tend to have a style that could be described as "boho," although I don't think that word is very accurate.

Florals work best for me in the summer, when I let my hair air dry and it is very curly. Medium to larger round floral prints work best. I wear the dark floral turtleneck in the winter when I mostly dry my hair straight - but it looks better if I add some wave or curl back with a curling iron.

Indigoprint, interesting! But sorry, I can't separate it that way. Too many categories would ensue. For me, if it is flowers it's a floral. But I see it is definitely a statement print of flowers, good idea! Maybe that's why I like it. I admire concert Ts but would feel like a poser because I don't go to concerts. So if it had been better quality I could have worn a floral "concert" T!

Lisa, interesting...masculine. I hadn't thought of that. And Suz claims boyish. That's masculine with a spark! That may be the energy I'm shying away from in geometrics. I don't see myself as "feminine" in the traditional use of the word, but I can see that I like softer images, especially if they have their own kind of edge. And yes, such a disappointment in quality. You had a post on declining quality. What I did was refuse to put up with it...returned the T and cited quality as the reason.

And Suz, thanks, that makes sense that florals have so much variety. So that would explain why the "right" floral really hits, while some don't. In your set, I would love that Anthropologie Hadley shirt.

Angie, thanks! I will solve the mystery of the Finds at some point, if it is on my end as I think. I think overall I do like big florals best, but mostly dark!

Irina, I love those. And I'm with you on the dark and moody.

Sal, I like that red dress middle bottom row! I think in general I'm not feeling the bright flowers either. I guess I'm feeling moody and want moody flowers to match. But this is long term so maybe I need to figure out why I'm moody! :)

Peri, your top is gorgeous! Too bad it didn’t work out.
I mostly don’t wear florals, except for scarves. I mentioned on Lisa’s thread that I have this paisley shirt that I don’t like to wear. It kind of looks like a twee floral, and that might be the problem.

Patterns I love: stripes, plaid, polka dots, animals (dogs, butterflies, fish, etc.), and tie dye.

I love that top Peri!

And I love florals but right now I am finding them tricky to wear....as a spring I have tended to like brighter ones rather than softer or darker - and as a tall person I also like bigger patterns rather than smaller. But at the moment bigger and brighter ones are not feeling as good on me.

My florals and almost florals are below.

The black floral, maroon floral and blue skirt are all in the holding zone right now. The blue dress does not get a lot of wear but I still like it.

The first three get the most wear but for winter only the long sleeve dress is going to be worn.

I like florals as a print. I only have two tops in my wardrobe and they are exactly the kind of florals I wear. My florals should be either black or oversized, they should not be in a “pretty “ category but have rather some edge to it. AllSaints is one of the brands whose florals I like, dark and moody. Sizing doesn’t work for me but it’s a different issue. I have more conventional florals in my silk scarves.

Personally, I like BIG, abstract florals! Preferably colourful and spaced out. Here are all the florals in my current wardrobe.

I tend towards stripes, dots, plaids, and horse-y patterns. Although am partial to a floral if it ticks off the boxes.

That's a great top, Peri. A sophisticated floral! Too bad the quality was no good.

I probably shouldn't have generalized about florals so broadly. They're harder for me to find/ pick and I tire of them faster than geometrics, which I never tire of. But my style is strongly "boyish" so geometrics suit me more easily.

I still think it's the case that more can "go wrong" in a floral pattern for any given wearer. With geometrics, you need to think about scale, contrast level, and colour and yes, I suppose, the yin/yang of it all. With florals, it is all of those factors but there are more shapes that might or might not appeal, and often florals are multicoloured, and there are various possible backgrounds, and so on.

I do like a lot of florals, though! I also wear them in scarves very happily and don't tire of those.

My floral or floral-adjacent items below. (Including the pink sweater I forgot about in an earlier thread!)

Well my immediate reaction to your All Saints too was/is “ I love it !” . That’s a floral I could wear and I see why you love it . Too bad about the screening quality . I hear you re dots , stripes , plaids etc . I think for some people they are fun , but for others they read too masculine . Or not soothing to the eye as you mentioned .

I was surprised in LJP's post that many responses said that florals are the hardest pattern to wear. To me they are the easiest and the pattern I'm most drawn to. I always feel like graphics are harder...stripes, polka dots, checks, plaid, etc. I have a few striped tops and one polka dot and I feel "okay" when I wear them, but not really fantastic. I feel really off in plaid and don't own any anymore. Somehow all those seem more cheery, or energetic, or upbeat than I often feel.

Food for thought. Suz said that people who like florals tend to like a specific kind. I do fall in the dark floral family. All of my florals are on a black or navy background, and they just hit me as really beautiful. Some are big and bold, and others are small, but they are all dark florals, and for me they feel more restful than energetic. I would have loved this top I ordered:

https://www.nordstrom.com/s/cr.....3-0-1-PDP_

Sadly I had to return it. AllSaints used to do beautiful printing (silk screen, I'm not sure) but this was that rubbery feeling overlay that I can't tolerate. Sad decline in quality. But it is an example of the florals I love. Nothing sweet or shy about it, but still it feels soothing. (And sorry, Finds is still not working for me. Angie said it was fixed so I think the problem is on my end. Some privacy setting or such that I'm not aware of.)

Anyway, where do you fall? Are florals the hardest to wear or not?
