This post was so helpful to me. I just wanted to thank you, Runcarla, for sharing your dressy capsule items. I’m beginning to work on my own and really like what you have put together.

I loved the wedding outfit when you posted it last year, and it is great to be reminded how classically elegant and versatile those pieces can be.

I love your dressy shoes - a real problem area for me. I wish I could wear pointy toes because the really take things up a notch!

I bought two pairs of dressy pants for holiday wear from LOFT and have been trying to put together a capsule of tops go with them. I don't wear dresses and have lots of notice on the rare occasions I need one (a cruise or a wedding) so I am focusing on the casual end of the dressy spectrum. I really need to work on accessories now. You are a good role model for having everything planned out and coordinated so you can be well dressed for almost any occasion.

I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been said....except that you are now my official inspiration to build a better dressy capsule for myself. I do think my needs are a bit less dressy than yours, except for the occasional wedding, but I can still use this as tremendous inspiration. Way to go!

I agree with everyone else, a perfect capsule that suits you and your style. Classic with a twist, elegant, modern.

I also love dressy clothes and while my capsule looks very different to yours it works for me really well. I feel that if I was asked to a wedding, the races, an awards night, a cocktail party or even a black tie event (at a slight stretch) one of my dresses would work. And I don't have that many either:)

This is a wonderful capsule that will not age or can be updated with at a minimum cost and effort. I have saved some long skirts for special occasions that I have never worn but am glad I have them. I also have a few tops and toppers that mean I can come up with something at a moment's notice. But I usually reach for my black tuxedo outfit and always get compliments on it. It is seasonless depending on how I wear it.
That is something that I could see you wearing as it seems to fit your style. You have texture and shine, some color and pattern. My favorite piece is the Zara bomber in 13. You could also wear it with jeans!

You looked fantastic in the ball-skirt outfit--I loved it then and now. And it has the spirit of being pieces that can be remixed. I have enough "nice enough" pieces that I can dress for a posh restaurant, but they are kind of conservative and don't contribute to a sense of fun that I think should accompany a special occasion. So, I'm looking to add a couple of dedicated special occasion pieces as well as a couple of separates that are very like what I have now, but in more feminine or dramatic colors.

This is so interesting, Runcarla. Thanks for taking the time to put together this post. A dressy capsule is a challenge I'm sort of looking at out there on the horizon -- I'm not quite there yet but know I will need to address this, so it's great to hear the wisdom of someone who is ahead of me on the journey.

Yes, #11 is a stunner! But I love the other outfits too and I really like seeing how you wore some of these pieces for daytime.

I don't attend a lot of truly dressy events so I don't have a huge need for fancy clothes -- but when you need them, you need them, right? I went to a wedding about a year ago, and I planned what I was going to wear very carefully, bought a dress, etc. Then the fit of the dress turned out to be not as good as I'd thought plus the overall cut was kind of kludgy, and the weather turned out to be colder than I had expected and I totally didn't have an appropriate topper so I just wore, like, a cardigan. And it was so depressing, I was like, argh, I'm over 40 years old and even when I try I can't manage to dress like a grownup!

Observing other guests at the wedding, I realized that a lot of them weren't wearing really elaborately fancy clothes. They were wearing fairly regular stuff, but fancied up (like with accessories and whatnot -- in any case it wasn't so much what they were wearing as how they were wearing it). I thought, a-ha, that's what I need to do!

But, as they say, simple isn't easy. So, I really appreciate you breaking down where things cross over and how you pair items for dressier events. Thanks for showing the way.

Thanks Runcarla!! This capsule is fantastic and inspiring. I just spoke about my "dressy" capsule at length. I need to keep a few things separate from my everyday wardrobe to have any hope of keeping them nice enough for events, but I do enjoy a fair amount of crossover.

That ball skirt... drool...

What a nice capsule. I like the fact that it looks dressy and comfortable. Like many others, I love #11. To answer your question, I used to have a large dressy capsule, but over the last few years I've donated most of them because I don't go to many events any more. I still have a few items so I won't be stuck and I can also make something if it becomes necessary. This gives me the option to make whatever is on trend or what I'm in the mood for, at the time. I can also raid my design samples that I've made in my size - like this one

Seriously swooning over the long skirt in #11. Everything looks great, but I like that outfit in particular.

At this point in my life, I don't have enough causes to dress up to make a separate capsule worthwhile. My current rule is not to buy anything that can't be worn on an ordinary day. I'd like to expand on my dressier clothes a bit so I have more options, but it's not a high priority for me right now. Someday when I'm not a broke student anymore, I'd love to go to formal events more frequently, and at that point I'm sure I'll be excited to dress to the nines!

To answer your questions: Yes, I do have a dressy capsule, but at the same time, I also have several items which cross over, especially dresses, skirts, tops/blouses, shoes and jewellery. I love clothes and accessories which can be used in different settings and styled in various ways.

With only a LBD, and an invite to a NYE wedding, last winter I decided that I needed to work on my dressy capsule. DH and I do go out, and whereas he can default to suits, I was left scrambling much of the time. I wanted a capsule that would cover most occaisions.

#1 shows the black taffeta ball skirt and cream button down I got for the wedding, the velvet brocade leggings and silver T that I got for the open house put on by the groom's family, and the older LBD.

#2 shows additions - which cross over and get more regular wear. Maroon velour top (with hoodie style pockets), velvet full leg trousers, textured skirt with lace at hem, Zara embroidered bomber.

#3 shows 2 tops that are wardrobe workhorses. Both have gone to work, though the dark top is my holiday dinner go-to with the leggings from #1 (dressy, but cool for a warm kitchen!)

#4 are work staples that I would not normally wear for evening, but after retirement I may keep (vs donate). The black cuffed trousers have a slubbed texture, with gym pant styling at the waist (smooth elastic waistband pull-on, drawstring tie), and the skirt has a silver thread running through it.

#5 are the shoes I wear most for PM. The patents are only very occaisionally worn to work, but first choice for PM. The other 2 are for work, but cross over for dressy.

#6 are PM accessories. The silver and gold clutches are identical and have chains should I wish to be hands free. There are pearls (real and faux) and silver and sparkle. I love the trio of sparkly circle barrettes.

#7, 8, 9, 10 are close ups of some of the items. Interesting texture does the talking for these simply cut garments.

#11 outfit worn to the wedding NYE 2017

#12 outfit worn to work earlier this fall (the first time I wore the cream shirt to work) and the catalyst that got me thinking about garments crossing over capsules. Add pearls and it is party ready!!

#13 Zara bomber, lace trimmed skirt, pink lace tank (for work, but could easily be for PM).

#14 velour top picked up in lieu of maroon sweater (which I wasn't finding).

#15 silver foil T and black leggings worn to groom's parent's open house and several times since for dinners out, etc.

I'm confident that I can make up an outfit for almost any occaision that might come up. What seems like a large dressy capsule is really cost effective, because of the cross over into everyday adding to a lower CPW.
Not shown, the silver foil T with cropped jeans and silver Cons worn for a city restaurant brunch with family!

Do you have a distinct dressy capsule? Do your clothes cross over capsules?
