Cerinda, Joyce B, kkards--thank you for for your generous comments and for enabling!
Cerinda, who knows for sure, but for my body type it's the flat waist and just the cut, which just happens to have more of the right proportions--most are always too short in the stride--and also the fact that part of the "taper" is achieved by drape and not by tight fit, and they don't taper completely tight on the calf, so not as much ice-cream cone look. The finished waist is a deal-cincher because it allows me to wear a real belt and look a tad less casual than gathered elastic or drawstrings.

I added an outfit--it turns out to be a copycat of the LOFT blouse advertisement and totally unplanned! In the photo is my same gray belt, but I remembered my thin bronze belt and tried that later. I could wear a camel or beigey belt to match the shoes, but I like a tonal belt, to give more illusion of the 1/3-2/3 proportion even though with flats it borders on half and half! Added the mauvy blush sweater for air conditioning--it's a bit long, but I like the color combo, and later I can try some shorter jackets or cardis.

love the joggers on you! FAB.
yup, sometimes the unexpected just pops up and it becomes a surprise workhorse. (which i sense these pants may become for you)

Those jogger pants are great on you.
The skirt looks good to me but of course it's hard to see if it pulls anywhere because of the color, I think you can see that better in real life.
The fit is good from what I see.

I don't think I've ever liked jogger pants on anyone as much as I like these on you; what a score! I'm wondering what makes them so different to my eye: maybe the extra length?

Janet, I hear you on the fabrication.
See the find below (ignore the giant goober bow) which at first looks like it might fit the same way. and be a great pant.
But, the fabric is a crisp cotton, and the pleats start lower (on me, anyway) so they give that whole poufy crotch vibe that is no bueno.

You know, whilst clearly I have been shopping, these Anthro pants are a great reminder not to "overshop" (ahem--may need to return something) because you need to leave room for serendipity. Not only $$, but just, room in the wardrobe, and building capsules around items you really love.

I like the skirt and the joggers on you. I absolutely love the tencel track pants I got at Anthro. I'm wearing them today, and even hubs likes them. Such a comfy style.

The joggers are great and I prefer the belt you are wearing with them to the fabric belt on the anthro model. The skirt looks good too. I think you could go a fraction shorter if you wanted to but the length is perfectly acceptable as is.

Thanks, Word Lily! The skirt still has tags on because I think I'm still on the fence. I love the skirt per se but I know footwear will be an issue if worn for usual work day. And it's more demanding than wearing a fluid sweater over my usual pencil skirts, which is a great FFBO. I considered keeping it for some semi-dressy occasions since I could wear fancier tops. But it's possible that "my" skirt is still out there somewhere.

Angie, thank you. These were calling my name even though I was not looking for "joggers," but there you go. I have tried on a number of other pleated pants this year, but none had the right fit and vibe even for a pleat-lover.

The skirt: doesn't look too skimpy at all! I think you look slim and curvy, attractive, in it! And it doesn't look too long, either, although I don't know what the current "perfect" length for pencil skirts is. There's a pretty broad range, and this is certainly among them.

I don't really understand the joggers trend, but you clearly like them, and that makes them valuable to you.

Here is finally a pic of the BR longer, high-waisted pencil skirt.
I tried 3 different sizes/types (R and P) but only the R in one size fit close enough.
Here it is at its existing length, kind of a retro look--is that too long as-is? If it needed to be just a half or one inch shorter that would not be hard, I guess. I am also a bit worried it might be too tight, no forgiveness for a pound or 2, and was not able to get the right fit sized up in either R or P. Does it look too skimpy here? I have to think about that because tucking in is the way to utilize the high waist and longer length, but also is less forgiving!

Next are Anthro joggers I was not looking for, but brought home. I think these are a keep, because I just like them! On me it's pushing the leg-shortening thing because they're still below my real waist and I will mostly wear flats, but these are longer in stride than usual and have a wide flat waistband that fits, so that's a HEWI. In the stock photo they look brown, but IRL to me just look olive. I think I can wear these to work for working weekends, actually, with a not-too casual top and shoes, but certainly at home and for casual. Just shown with AGL flats I was wearing, but I have loafers, oxfords and t-strap oxfords that "go" ( all flats) and if I wanted to do the heels-thing for some going-out occasion, I could.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

ETA another outfit option added.
