Ok, I think the pic order has changed. At first, wearing my contacts, my fave was the pin-tuck white top. Now I’m looking at them without lenses (and ironically can see better), what I like is tops tucked in and worn with the belt. I think these shorts are very tailored, and that neat and tidy look is consistent that. Makes for harmony.

Haha—yes! Sometimes I just want a cardigan.
This sweet little one (although I want to avoid being too sweet) reminds me of my sweet little grandma, who had a blue one she wore frequently around the house. It was cut very similar to this one.
I also think I like it with the shorts because I’m not 100% sold on the way I look with something tucked into the high waist, but untucked looks sloppy. The cardigan over a tucked top let’s me have it both ways.

And thanks for your comment about all these posts, Sterling! I feel like people are being incredibly helpful, and worry I may be asking too much, so appreciate your perspective.

First off, let me say how much I admire the work you are effort you are putting in. It is a lot of work to put everything on and then photo document it. I wish I had a tenth of your ambition. Angie always suggests it. I have yet to actually do it.

I like 5/6 because the proportions are pleasing to the eye and it looks comfortable.

I also like 7/8 because sometimes a girl just wants a cardigan. Another fan of 35/36.

Overall, I think you have compiled some great looks for differing situations.

Thanks, SarahD8. None of this is intuitive to me, so I appreciate more words about it than a lot of people.

The camp shirt is actually green, not blue. It has a smaller pattern than the shorts. This photo was taken from the same distance as the shorts fabric pic.

I probably would like a studded belt better than the one I have, shown in pic 2 here.

I like 9-12 with the burgundy tee (seriously, throw on those flat sandals and maybe a long pendant necklace and you are good to go).

The various versions with the shorter blush cardi work well too.

Definitely try the longer blush cardi with the brown skinnies!

The cobalt tank does seem like good proportions but not the right color.

In general I prefer the tucked versions of the outfits.

The waist bling is a bit overwhelming for my taste BUT I think that contrast between the floral print of the shorts and the tougher studded belt might be right in your style sweet spot, so if you like it, rock it!

I want to like the blush bell-sleeve top but it doesn't seem like you. Disregard if that's not the case, I may not know your style well enough yet.

The pattern mixing ones don't work for me, either, I'm sad to say. You mention the "similar colors" in the camp shirt and the shorts but to my eye they have nothing in common color-wise! I see brown, green, burgundy, and a bit of pink in the shorts while the camp shirt is light blue and dark blue, right? Or maybe black, but if so the black in both prints isn't enough to tie them together.

I think similar types of prints (e.g., two florals) work best when there is a CONTRAST in scale. But I am sure there are exceptions to that.

I like 35-36 too! The pintucks on the top work as pseudo-stripes, so you've got a bit of a pattern mix with the floral print. Plus, there is something of a Victoriana feel to both the floral print and the top so they are harmonious in that way too.

Thanks Angie! It’s interesting to me to hear people like that one. Can you give me any insight as to why pattern mixing with the camp shirt so clearly doesn’t work? Similar colors, different scales, similar levels of casual, even related patterns (which I thought would look clever), but it just. doesn’t. work. Why not?

Liz, they are denim, with a muted floral print. I’ve attached a photo of the fabric to this reply. Between the fabric and the pattern, the high waist and the medium length (~4” inseam), I think they straddle borders, which is probably why I like them.

Jill58, I’m not clear which of these Ts and tanks you find dressy. I’d consider the fine gauge sweater that’s your favorite as one of the dressier items.

I was assuming these shorts are casual since they are quite short. That leaves me a bit confused about pairing them with what look to me like somewhat dressier tops (with the exception of 3-6 and 9-12). I think I like some of the blush pieces on their own but maybe not with these shorts. I agree with Joy that with leggings you will want longer tops. Also Joy's suggestion for skinnies is a good one. I think the best top for the shorts is the one shown in 9-12. My least favorite is the cami (27/28) and pattern mix (15-17) (31/32). Maybe the blush tops could be paired with some different pants?

It's hard to tell from the pictures. What color are the shorts? And what sort of material? Are they a casual short or a "going-out" short? Those answers would influence my opinions.

I'm very drawn to 35/36. I like those proportions. Bet those light oxfords would be great with that one. I agree that the tank in 5/6 works well, as does the plumber tee in 9 ( I think I prefer it untucked?). My least favorite is the blue top in 15/16 -- it has a lot of length for a boxy top. I agree with Joy that the long cardi and some of the longer tops (3/4, maybe 31/32 as well) are crying out for skinny pants. I might even like the blue printed button-front over a pair of skinnies. Also, it occurs to me that the blue printed top might be a prime candidate for knotting at the waist, if that's something that appeals to you.

cute shorts....i like 5,9, & 20...shorter and/tucked tops because of the high waist of the short....i'm not a fan of the pattern mixing in 32, or the cami in 27. i do like the color of the cami, but i think i'd try a better fitting tank or tee instead.
the blush sweater in 18/19 is nice, but IMO to long for these shorts, but could work with skinnies...or longer shorts....

Thanks Joy. I replied to your concern about the leggings over on that post. Tying shoes isn’t a problem for me. When I tried to ask people which shoes/boots to try with which tops in the “leggings” post, where I just threw them on together randomly, the responses nearly all talked about “outfits” as if everything was already matched up, so I’m trying to find a better way to ask the question here.

I would suggest for skinnies, the long top in 3/4 and the long cardigan in 18/19. They seem too long for your shorts but could work well with cropped pants. I like the top better tucked as in 5. If you wear leggings you may want tops even longer than any of these so you are not wearing leggings as pants.
As for the shoes in Finds, do you take off shoes inside your home? If so, the first and second pairs would be the easiest as the third would probably need to be tied, another step. This is also true if you ever have back pain.

1-2 is my absolute favorite on you. Of the rest, I prefer the proportions in the tucked with waist bling versions. The short pink cardigan is cute, but the longer one doesn’t work as well with the shorts to my eye. 16 and 31 are my least favorites- 16 seems too pale and 31, while an interesting pattern, seems to compete with the shorts.

As for what to try with the pants/leggings, 1, 10, 24.

First up, thanks to everyone who commented on round one! https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ustrated-2 I’ve tried to find a way to use each of your suggestions—a lightweight, 3/4 sleeve blouse and black as Meredith suggested, a sleeveless T-neck as per Le Pedestrienne, a lighter weight cranberry top because Rachylou liked the look of the velvet one, blush pink and the blue top as SarahD8 suggested, and a swingy top for Aida. I also threw in a few more ideas of my own—possibly my first-ever bell sleeves, the old cardigan-as-shirt trick for slightly cooler days, pattern mixing with a camp shirt, a bit of waist-defining bling... I still don’t have the ice blue shade LBD suggested or a V-neck for BD.

i was surprised at how much I like 5-6. Such a plain top, as seen in the untucked pictures, but it shined somhow when tucked in with these. I don’t understand how/why that is. I also like 11-12.

15-17 and 35-36 surprised me too. I had been looking forward to both the pattern mixing and the peasant top, but they fell flat. Is it the straightness of the button-up shirt, and the straight hem of the blouse, or why are these looks so boring?

Shoes would be chosen from these three finds: light flats, dark flats, and sandals. I’d wear the floral metallic boots with them too, if I had them.

I really like the shorts, but between Germany’s climate & my Florida weight gain, I’ve scarcely worn them in the decade since I got them.

All of the blush pieces are still NWT, so trying them here is also a K/R for them.
I’m still undecided on the top with bell sleeves. I guess it’s ok with these and with the brown skinnies in the other post, but it doesn’t excite me with anything I’ve tried it with yet.

Some of these might work with the brown damask leggings too. ( https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....st-1866210 ) I hope I don’t sound too much like an internet “model” saying this, but tell me which ones to try on together and I’ll post pix.
