I take my shirts and blouses to the cleaners.

Ha, Nicole. That’s exactly how I iron – guess our mothers were cut from the same laundry cloth.

Wow, Nicole. That's an amazing description. I was taught to do the collar, then yoke, then sleeves, then body area last. I never did have a ruffle class.

I vote for steamers. It's my first choice over the iron these days, especially for things with ruffles.

There is an art to ironing. I remember my mothere "teaching" me the proper way to iron a shirt when I was a teenager and she was sick of ironing my shirts for me.

It's about order--you HAVE to start with the yoke on the back. Then flip the shirt over and wedge the front button edge into the pointy side of the ironing board--and as you move along, keep wedging the shirt along the point of the board. You should be able to iron from shirt tail to armpit/shoulder corner--then lift the shirt off the board, iron the back using the yoke seam as the stopping point, then take the shirt off the iron again, and work the last front panel in reverse. Which means you start at the side seam and work your way to the button placket. You should be able to iron from top to bottom of the shirt in each pass of the iron.

When you get to obstacles, like ruffles, iron underneath them and don't worry about ironing them til the very end. After the body of the shirt is pressed, do the collar, the sleeves and finally any ornamentation--like the ruffles. Lay the ruffles flat on the board--don't worry about rewrinkling the shirt you just ironed. You can always go back and touch it up if it's a problem. You don't really move the iron with things like ruffles. You just lay the ruffle flat, and place the tip of the iron into the inside seam (where the ruffle meets the shirt). pick up the iron, and do the next section. I usually pull on the shirt itself to get the ruffle into place, you're less likely to burn your fingers with the steam that way.

Keep hangers ready and throw the shirt on a hanger right away and move on to the next shirt. I prefer to iron several shirts at once, because each one gets a little easier as you figure out your system.

Oh, I meant it would be a pain for Maya's friend to hand steam all her tops at work, not necessarily that it's a pain for you to do it yourself. I'd say it's about as much work as ironing is.

I have no idea if this would work for you, but my Dad says that if you put a shirt in the dryer for FIVE minutes only and then hang to dry, it won't need ironing. I haven't tried it yet myself.

My stepmom has a hand steamer and it seems easy to use. Why do you think it's a pain, Ana? I was considering getting one. They are apparently easier on clothes than irons.

I'm a bad ironer too, Maya. I hate ironing. A lot.

I don't have this problem with my ruffled blouses, because most I own are slinky material - just hang up for 24 hours and they look fine.

But if it's ironable and needs an iron, the trick is to point the tip of the iron towards the seams, while puling up slightly on the garment....

Hmmm... it's really hard to explain in type - maybe there's a google or youtube "how-to" image somewhere? Try "ironing pleats" - it's the same basic idea!

Good luck.

I have had decent luck controlling the ruffle problem by washing in cold, then lay flat on top of a towel, arrange the ruffles flat and even, lay another towel on top and press down. Often takes a day or 2 to dry but the weight of the towel helps train the ruffles as it dries, then a quick touch up with the iron on the whole garment and done

I have like 3 shirts I was too lazy to lay out after washing and now need to iron the ruffles. Boo...

I don't mind the task of ironing. I'm just a complete doofus at it, and often make things worse. It's a fairly simple task that most people have no trouble at all with, so it's kind of embarrassing how bad I am at it.

Heh, your response made me laugh. :D

I don't mind ironing--I kind of find it relaxing. I feel the same way about vacuuming the carpet. BUT, about the steaming--depending on where your friends work, there should be a machine that does the steaming, and all they have to do is pop it in there for 10 minutes and then go get it out. If they have to hand steam it, then it's a big pain. I'd just ask, "hey, at your work, do you guys have to hand steam something, or do you have a machine that does it?" And if they have a machine just ask if you could stop by sometime and get a shirt steamed. I'd steam my stuff when I worked at Express all the time, and sometimes I'll take a top to J. Crew and ask Lauren if she can put it in the steamer (not too often though, as I like ironing).

Nooooo!

I figured that was the answer but I had to hear it out loud...or see it typed out loud...or something. I am not a very good ironer. I guess I'll iron it this once, hope that I don't ruin it, and pick up one of those home dry clean kits...

I have a few friends working retail now but I feel weird asking them. I don't mind asking them to get me discounts because I can pay them back and it's no big deal...but asking them to do stuff for me just makes me feel annoying.

Oh, hey, I just thought of something. Do you know someone at a retail store? They probably have a steamer and you could ask if they would steam it for you. That will save a lot of time. Otherwise, you could have it dry cleaned, and they will iron it for you (although, sometimes they flatting the ruffles).

How on earth do you keep the ruffles looking nice? I hand-washed my blue UO blouse (as per label instructions) and the ruffles along the neckline and sleeve are in disarray. I don't know if I'm ever going to be able to get them to be as perfect as they were when I originally purchased it.
