I always find comfortable footwear is key for a trip, I always end up walking more than I anticipated. And layering is key too. I stick to a small color palette, usually 3 colors.

Donna - my mom actually doesn't live in SF, we're going as a work trip for her & tag-along trip for me. If she lived there I'd just steal her clothes all week I'm just generally not a fan of suede/faux suede. And I definitely would wear booties with my dress, or high boots. And I do believe it's SF proper but I'm not sure what the definition of that area is.

It sounds like you will be in SF proper? And maybe your mom lives in the Richmond or Sunset District where the fog doesn't clear until the afternoon?

Footwear tends to take up the most luggage space. You might want to consider wearing tall boots for travel and packing booties. For going out and with your dress, would you consider booties? Also, in November you're not likely to get rain, but non-suede does wear better than suede.

Caro - thanks for the link!
Beth Ann - I am a big fan of boots/booties. Last year I wore the dress with heeled boots a lot, but that's not very practical in SF (or for my now more busy/active lifestyle) so I am on the search for a pair of non-suede, flat booties or boots!

@florence - thank you! I have seen that tip around the site a few times. I have to pick that third color though.

I have made this suggestion on other packing posts too, but my best advice is to stick with a color palette. You know you want to wear black and white, so I'd pick just one other color to go with, and then bring only items in your chosen color scheme. I did this on my last trip, and by the end I still hadn't worn every combination, because everything went together. Would I live like that every day? No. But for a very short trip, it gets you a lot of bang for your buck.

When I say I want to wear that dress everyday, I don't literally mean that. It's just super comfortable and flattering, so a good jumping-off point.

Hi everyone! I'm pretty new to the forum, so I'm just gonna do a quick rundown of who I am. My name is Alyssa (isacat is optional - and ironic as cats are my kryptonite allergy) I'm 20, and I recently moved to the DC area from Pittsburgh, PA to attend the Art Institute for interior design. I have a part-time job as a nanny, which I love, but it kinda throws a monkey wrench in my style.
My biggest wardrobe challenge is not letting my work wardrobe (yoga pants/leggings + baggy crew neck tees and sneakers) leak into my "other" wardrobe. Which is, y'know, for the rest of the time. School, dates, errands, etc. So, yeah those are the basics.
Now, about the capsule wardrobe. I'm going to San Fran at the end of November for my mom's work trip, to babysit my newest sibling (who is not yet born.) I have a horrible tendency to overpack, so even though I'll only be there 5 days/4 nights that could easily become a big suitcase stuffed to the brim.
I would like to create a "capsule" wardrobe that takes into account the local weather, the fact that I will have a long flight there and back, the babysitting during the day part, and a casual-chic night wardrobe. I've been to San Fran before around the same time and was shocked by how cold it was, and at my awful footwear choices. I don't want to do too much shopping specifically for this trip, but if there's an item or two I'll need, I'm willing to buy. So, yeah. Help please? I know for sure that I will be bringing a long-sleeve jersey b/w striped dress, and want to wear it everyday, so I guess that should be my starting point? thanks in advance!
