Thanks for the suggestions! I admit to being completely clueless about fashion/style. I never would have even considered wearing a belt with a sweater. Sure, I've seen other people do it. (Well, I've seen it in magazines. My small country town doesn't have a lot of fashionista-types.) Never would have thought about a belt, but I could really see it working.

Thanks again for the ideas!

To me, you don't look dowdy. You look "grown up." Maybe you're just not used to seeing yourself spiffed up? You could definitely have more fun with the outfit - the others have given you fantastic suggestions. A different colored cami under the sweater, some funky jewelry, some fun flats. You're definitely NOT dowdy!

Sweet gladiators! Try a denim pencil skirt and little sweet pea swing or wrap top. I bet that will get you on your way.

I don't think you look dowdy. But, I agree with chewy and crw that you could break up the twinset. Both are great pieces on their own, and you will get a lot of mileage out of them. But together, it's a conservative look.

Also I think the twinset is not quite skirt length - it's a tad too long. A belt would solve this and make the proportions better.

You may feel less dowdy in a flat that has a lower vamp, like a ballet flat, or a thong sandal. The sandals are quite adorable and the black is a great choice with your hair color, but the straps interrupt the long lean line, which may be why you feel the skirt is too long. It's not, it's a perfect length.

So... try a ballet flat or thong. Hike the shell up a few inches to get an idea how a shorter length top would work, or belt it. Then toss on a different color cardigan (I bet turquoise would look great). Or wear that cardigan but maybe pair it with a skirt-length graphic tee?

If yummy mummy is what you are going for - covered but sexy - how about trying a wrap shirt? I bet you'd look amazing in a wrap top. Also what about baring your arms? I suspect sleeveless would look great on you - showing off bare arms (while keeping cleavage covered) is sexy but tasteful. Another good style to try is a cowl neck top.

I would try Chewy's suggestion of splitting up the twinset. You might try a collared buttondown under the cardi or see Shiny's What I Wore posts for more cardi inspiration. Is the shell sleeveless or short sleeve? You can wear a collared shirt under that also to make it like a vest. Putting a belt over it would accentuate your waist. A scarf or statement necklace would also be great with the shell.

The pencil skirt would be great with lots of different tops. A Sweet Pea or SP style top would be great too.

I don't think that you could look frumpy if you tried! You're gorgeous. That said, I think that twinsets are a little too conservative for my taste. The pencil skirt looks great on you. I'm sure that there are lots of accessory experts who will be able to tell you how to accessorize the outfit differently and get a completely new look.

Don't toss the twinset in the trash! Try wearing the pieces separately for more interest, belting the cardi, and adding a colorful flower pin, necklace, or bracelets. I think you could make that outfit work with a few tweaks.

So I've been experimenting more lately with my clothing color and cut. (I usually wear a black tee and jeans.) Honestly, I think my experiments have mostly been failures! Take this Mother's Day out: http://bitsofpieces.wordpress......ing-dowdy/

I did NOT look like a yummy mummy. I looked dowdy and matronly!

I am on a budget, but I know it's possible to find clothes that look good and don't cost a fortune. I just don't seem to know what really looks good on me....
