That is the nub of style: the effort you put into creating a certain look and feeling for yourself. Some people are unwittingly stylish, for most of us it takes work. The default position is unwittingly unstylish. It is a form of opting out I think. Just like I have opted out of driving a cool car.

I personally believe the key is balance. The boyfriend fit is definitely one that could be misconstrued as sloppy if not balanced with more structured components.
And although I'm by no means an expert on the boyfriend jean, I don't think I've ever seen them as baggy as this woman's.

claracluck, I don't think this has to do with sisterhood. It has to do with questioning how much the distinctions we who are interested in fashion make in our own minds really matter to most of the world. Which may or may not be relevant, since we ultimately all dress for ourselves if we can.

I have certainly stumbled to the grocery store in my ski clothes or after a weekend of camping in a tent.

I am not judging this woman at all. My impression is that dressing according to the latest trends like boyfriend jeans is not a priority for her, as is the case for many people where I live. There could be any number of reasons ranging from personal values to financial issues to rebellious style statement. I respect that completely, and I bet she would not look at me in some of my outfits and make a snap judgment either. That's one of the great things about where I live - you really can't judge a book by its cover.

Oh, I don't think the woman looks bad at all. Her style is a style. Distinctive, recognizable. I believe it was put together in support of a set of values, interests, needs, and social relationships. My money is on the notion that she got dressed according to rules and principles.

I find the flat question very interesting -- as to whether or not the average person would see a difference between the various types of baggy pants out there. My guess-timate is that most people have a sense of the difference, but are not able to identify what exactly is responsible for it. I think most would miss details with big impact. But of course there's a whole spectrum people fall across.

Anyways, I also feel that most people don't care that much, nor should they. It's not life or death. My family is really into it as a bunch of snickety architects and builders, but playing Uno will also pass the time for us.

I won't even admit to what I have worn out of the house, especially since having a baby.

Honestly, I think these are two totally different styles, and I see them as such. She reminds me of the biker style I see a lot in my area (Milwaukee, home of Harley). Can't see her shoes, but if they were biker boots, she would be right at home!

una is going for more RATE. I think of that as less preppy and more tough.

Different, yet similar in some ways.

Not judging the 'book', just analyzing the 'cover'. I thought Una's initial ? was if she(Una) dresses slouchy BF and all, does the end result look like this, or what are the differences. . .

Maybe I'm way off (it wouldnt' be the first time!), but I consider it an exercise in style analysis.

I'd make a great subject too, the days I throw my down puffer over my capri yoga pants and slip-on trainers and end up doing a couple errands after yoga class!

That's true, Dana. But I guess I find it difficult to call something intentional or not when there's no metric for the intent -- how can one say the woman's dressing is unintentional? We don't know her intent. But one certainly can say, "She doesn't look like she's intending to dress in the latest slouchy fashions."

ETA: In case it's unclear, I wasn't responding to your (Dana's) response in my first post, since you posted while I was posting

CCiele - All dressing may be intentional in that you intend to get dressed (that is, not be naked). But the goal of the dressing, and what you message, definitely varies.

- Those are not BF jeans. Those are jeans that are too big. There is a very big difference.

- The entire look is oversized. This may be deliberate, since it's a fashion meme where you live. Figure flattery is not her priority. If I had to guess, comfort and a certain rebel factor are more of a concern.

- The difference between how you are dressed is 1) fit and 2) intent. You would not fit in if you were hanging out with here friends, but I'm sure as far as she is concerned, she is just fine.

Well I think big, baggy, masculine and unflattering can be quite "deliberate" choices. I doubt this woman will wake up tomorrow and randomly put on tight skinnies and heels, you know? She's also deliberate in her way. Will people confuse your looks? Unlikely :)
Not having a great eye for new trends or high fashion myself, I do conciously sometimes have to remind myself: "oh, she's wearing that deliberately". Usually hair, make up, age, etc are dead giveaways.
I did see a young woman yesterday in the business district wearing huge wide skater jeans, if you know the kind I mean. I'm not on top of current youth trends but I think they're dated and they were quite anachronous for the environment. She otherwise looked quite conservative/normal, no crazy hair or anything. But she obviously meant to wear them. I think? If she had a mohawk or other alternative things going on it would have worked a lot better.

Yes, this could be found anywhere in my neck of the woods too. The devil is in the details, and even though the individual pieces COULD be worn stylishly (in YLF eyes?), what I see doesn't seem to be the case here. Not to pick apart a person, but just to consider the details:

Super slouchy BFs are okay, but probably not with that super baggy sweatshirt. The rolled hems are okay, but maybe a little narrower at the ankle, maybe a little higher.

I'm gonna guess the footwear is gearish, rather than trendy. And we can only see the back hair, not the part framing the face, but I'm guessing it isn't a current style,
or 'polished'.

P.S. Have fun in court -- on the other side of that quintessential railing!

I think I can usually tell the difference between deliberate and not deliberate. For me, the dead giveaway is usually the skin and hair. And general attitude, I think. If you are wearing a look like this deliberately, you're probably either being fashiony or ironic. In both cases, you've got some swagger, KWIM?

It's a fine line to walk though. In my case, sometimes I have to ask myself, "Anthropologie or homeless?

Yeah, this is why I don't love the ultra-roomy, ultra-baggy look. When taken to an extreme, it gets sloppy to my eye, even when it's intentional. If she were wearing stilettos and a cute top, etc., I still would not like those jeans.

I like the BF style on the more moderate end. My husband likes my BF jeans, but they're nowhere near this level of bagginess. Honestly, these make her look hobbit-like, and I'm sure her actual proportions are much nicer!

i have a cousin who dresses like the women on your picture, and at least for her, it is intentional. and although she won't admit it, i suspect that she spends a fair amount of time and effort to achieve that look. if you look at the picture above, notice how clean everything was. those rolls, which are dragging on the ground, are clean well maintained. this was not an outfit just pulled on, this had some thought.

that being said, i think just as you saw the similarities, but also recognized the major differences, this women would also recognize the similarities, but also recognize that you were looking to convey a different message in how you dress vs how she dresses.

There is nothing "artful" about her combo ( no negativity meant just an observation). To a degree this is what I would say sets you part from this woman. Your dressing is an artful expression of who you are and how you see yourself. Interestingly if this is a typical look where you live some thought may well have gone into her outfit in a desire to conform and fit in.

Err there is no comparison - you look fab and this lovely lady needs a little bit of help. Your look is intentional and this look doesn't seem to be.

You know, I'm pretty sure I see gals over in Hollywood rockin' the scraggly hair intentionally... but they're usually dressed like Axl Rose or Kat Von D. It looks intentional. Several factors in the picture above combine to make it feel unintentional. That said... I do believe that some people have the "eye" for design and some don't.

Lol, Denise.

Ya, I see a difference. Mind you, a little sewing and things could be different. The sweatshirt may be incurably gangsta tho...

Actually, I don't care - since it's likely most people aren't up on the BF trend as such, I'm not going to stand out in a good OR bad way. The most difficult part of her look was the hair situation for me. Like I said, I'm not judging. But I don't think this is an intentional dresser for many reasons.

Is this another "eye of the beholder" issue? The real question is how do you feel if people in your environment don't make a distinction between your BFs and hers?
