I think they need some sort of structured detail (for lack of a better term) to help prevent that. For instance, the one long cardigan I own is grey but has black faux leather details on the lower sleeve and on the pockets (which also helps it fall into my style a bit better than just a plain long cardigan). It also has a slightly shaped waist, which for me, really helps keep something from looking too overwhelming or frumpy.
