Thanks Lar.

Only 2 days til the birthday. You all have convinced me not to surprise him with the jacket, so I will ask his opinion on it. Gifts for him to unwrap are much less flashy, but things I know he’ll use—a bike pump, a sort of TV tray, and—nerdiest present ever—a handvac.

For big excitement, we are literally taking a trip to nowhere. The airport that’s been under construction for over a decade is supposedly almost ready to open, and they have lined up thousands of volunteers to test it out by coming for fake take-offs. We will be there Oct 15.

Now I just need to decide what kind of cake to make. He doesn’t like chocolate, cheesecake, pumpkin, carrots, or really sweet things.

FashionIntern, I’m with you. I’m all for our loved ones being seen on the road when they are cycling. The jacket we have, blends in perfectly during the day. It’s gear, that doesn’t look like gear, covered in tiny, tiny reflective dots. It’s kind of neat how it achieves this effect. It does not stand out at all during the day.
And it’s not such a good choice for daytime riding. This might defeat the purpose, if you start looking at two jackets. But it is reflective at night and that might be perfect for your son.

Also for riding when it starts to get dark: lights and reflectors on the bike: Lights in front & back, reflectors in the spokes of the wheels. blinking lights that you can attach to helmets and backpacks
And turn on the bike lights at dusk, while you can still see.

Preppy, such a sweet thing to say—thank you! I got lucky with this kid. I think that’s the main key—focus on the benefits of whatever quirk your kid brings and they’ll know they’re loved.

Yes, it does go both ways!
I felt pretty good the other night, in our too-tiny, barely furnished apartment, after a day at a job fair, when my son was telling me about his friends in families with 2 parents and siblings, jobs & money, permanently settled, etc and he stopped to say “why is everyone so dysfunctional but we aren’t? I mean we should hate each other, being crammed on top of each other like we are here, but we don’t.” We have been training each other well!

Jane, I hear you! I’m starting already to remind myself of my feelings throughout my 20s when my mother seemed to think I was her Barbie doll. I’d love to find something he loves, not make him feel like Ken.

LAR101 those are great points about bike jackets. He would wear it on his bicycle, but probably not for the kind of riding you’re thinking of. We live in Berlin, so bikes are everyday transportation. He takes his to basketball practice and occasionally to school. Vents would indeed help stop him from getting all sweaty inside.

Nemosmom, according to the description, both the grey side and the black side look like “normal” matte fabric, but one is especially waterproof and the other turns reflective in the dark when light is shone on it—but isn’t shiny the rest of the time. That’s one of the claims I really need to evaluate, because he prefers to fade into the background (reality check, I’ve never been able to do that, and he has many of my traits that make it impossible, plus he’s a 6’2” Black man. Reflective jacket or not, people notice him in a room. I just want him to be seen on the road. In the winter here, it gets dark by 4 pm.

Joy & Angie, sigh. Asking him might be best.

Anchie, this is one of many ways he doesn’t fit male stereotypes. I live most of the rest of them.

Suz, I should bring some of those suspenders home & make him pick!

ST, I hope you’re right & it looks “current” to him—as long as it’s not too current. Arg.

Is the whole jacket reflective? Does your son have the kind of personality that fits an all-reflective jacket? I ask because, my older son would NOT want anything that attracts attention to himself, whereas my little one likes all things loud, bright, and shiny - very much different personalities as far as dressing goes.

I like it too. Is this for cycling or all around?

A cycling jacket will be cut long in the back and long in the arms so you have room to reach the handlebars and your rear will be mostly covered. IRL cycling jackets tend to still look like cycling jackets.

If this is for cycling, ...and you are looking to be seen,...
the reflective white is designed for night but for the day, that neon yellow-green probably is more visible.

DH bought something similar for cycling
(not this one) but it proved too hot for cycling in Silicon Valley.

Update: Looking again, this jacket doesn’t look to be cut long in the back like a cycling jacket - just the one photo of the woman looks that way.

So true Suz- I have some of them too! It's definitely a good idea to have something for night visibility- and since the models look like teens/young adults it reads as current rather than practical!

Difficult to say. My son is not into fashion and clothes and he would wear whatever I got him as long as it feels comfortable. And my daughter is very much into fashion and has distinctive style and I would not dare to buy her clothes without consulting her. Your son sounds more like her, so I would just ask him.

TG, thanks for the vote of confidence. My son is also incredibly, incredibly picky—I’ve brought home a dozen navy sweaters for him this fall, returned all but one, (which I promptly shrank in the wash). But he likes wearing grey & black.

I like it! Without knowing your son's style properly, it's hard to say - I know my son is very picky. That said, I think he would like this!

The child’s birthday is coming soon and I have next to nothing for him. He recently wore the bright orange Colombia rain jacket I got him a couple years ago & declared it “not so bad”. For Christmas, I think my parents will get him a velvet puffer, like the one a teammate had last year. But still I’m tempted to get him this jacket now.
https://bibishopy.com/product/.....52f3c22ed6
The problem is that I have no way to touch or evaluate it. What do you all think? Should I try it?
