What about belts? I've often read, here and other places, how nice belts look on women with a small waist, but I hate the way they look on me. I want to like them, I love the way they tie outfits together, but they always make my waist disappear. Is there a special style I should wear, or am I putting them in the wrong place?

When I gain weight, it tends to go to my middle, so although my weight rarely flucuates, a gain of even 2 or 3 pounds is instantly noticable, and means none of my pants fit, and normally flattering things (wrap shirts, for example), just emphasis my tummy. What can I wear at both my thinnest and biggest?

Hi Cedar,
You've got a great shape - curvilinear and well proportioned. My best suggestion is to wear clothing that fits your body well and shows off your shape. Opt for fitted tee shirts with jeans, body skimming dresses and cute tops with figure-flattering skirts. You want to show off your waistline so avoid anything big and baggy - it'll add pounds that you don't need.

Also, when choosing tops or jackets, make sure they don't stop at your widest point (somewhere around hip/thigh area) or they'll cut you off and make you look wider. The same goes for skirts and dresses - opt for a knee-skimming length and avoid anything that stops mid-calf. Ditto cropped pants. You want your hemline to stop where you are not widest for best effect.

Good luck!

I'm also confused by that whole short waist/long waist thing. While I'm pretty sure I have a long torso and short legs, I don't really get the waist thing.

I would have guessed hourglass with nice curves.
We also need to find out what your style and preferences are like. E.g., hourglasses tend to look good in wrap dresses, but are you comfortable with dresses or do you want to start with pant outfits?

I'm writing a bit late, but wanted to chime in! My frame changed a bit after I quit swimming as well. You have a great body, Cedar! Have you read Angie's posts on dressing your body type?

You have a great figure, and I would say you are between an hourglass and pear, which is very feminine. You have a very nice and defined waist, and I am looking forward to your photos.

The swimming must have really added bulk to your shoulders. You were a fine example of haing a swimmers body. You still have a beautiful and feminine figure that any woman would be proud to have. You look great. Having slight pear tendancies is considered a good thing by many.

I'm a little surprised to hear I tend toward a pear; for years I had super-narrow hips (and a big round butt). I used to be a swimmer, which exaggerated made shoulders thicker, and gave me the inverted triangle shape at times. I hadn't realized my hips could change shape so much over the course of just a year or two.

Welcome Cedar and I’m with San’s initial feedback. Your body type tends towards a pretty pear. Thanks for taking a picture and we look forward to seeing your style! (Be sure to turn the flash off when you take the next photo – it really helps).

Thanks for the feedback; my body's gone through some changes lately--I used to be very straight-up-and-down, but recently filled out. I still have a hard time thinking of myself as anything but a rectangle, so it was nice to get some validation.

Hi Cedar. My guess is that you are an hourglass leaning slightly towards a pear. Do you feel this is correct?
Edit: I looked again and with your shoulders showing straight on it looks like your hips and shoulders are fairly equal so you would then be an hourglass. Does that sound right to you?

I originally had written this long thing discussing all my various issues, past and present, with my body, justifying almost everything about my physical appearance. But you don't need to know that to say what kind of body I have. So thanks in advance for any feedback!

I will apologize for the poor quality of the pics. And will add that in two I'm in my workout gear, and in the third, I am wearing my favorite pair of pants.
