Sal and Emily, Thanks for your comments. I think by the time someone starts this again I will be ready. I now know what was meant by set your own rules. I am working on getting myself in shape for the next challenge. :) Sal what you said about the fun part---that's what I want, I have no interest in challenging myself to do something I wouldn't like. Emily, I surely relate to the handbag issue. A big concern of mine was being sure I didn't let something slide that I really liked.

Again, thanks to all who posted. :)

I participated in Sterling's 30X30 challenge this Spring. In creating the capsule, I simply tried to include the most cohesive set of seasonally appropriate mix and match items that I had available to me. I did learn something, though, that didn't really sink in until much afterwards. I was contemplating a new purse that I'd just bought--it's a Summer-only bag, which is something I've never had before--and I suddenly realized that I'd really need to get to the business of wearing it because it would only be "current season" and therefore most-fashionable for a very limited amount of time. I usually hoard my better clothes and always devolve to the most casual item but I had an epiphany that this bag would be available to me for 3 months and then sit for 9 months and then, who knows? So, if I were to create for myself another capsule/time challenge, I might look for items that represent the best of my wardrobe and the best of the season and try to really enjoy wearing those things. I think I would use my closet more fully and I'd enjoy the passage of the seasons by thoughtfully trying to maximize my capsule for each new period.

I participated in two 30x30 challenges here for "fun"and learnt a few things about my style.

I didn't have many pieces outside those 30 for mid winter here, and it made me remove one or two that just were not being worn. It also made me improve my accessorising.

I am not a strict capsule person - I like a bit of fluidity but a challenge like this consolidated a few things for me as I put more energy and effort into outfit creation for the month.

Rachylou and Joy. The reason I said 60 days, that would bring me up to the Christmas season, and then after Christmas, I usually switch from autumn colors to gradually wearing somewhat lighter colors. But you are right, 30 items of clothing in 60 days is not typical for me, and would not be enough. I will wait until someone starts a new challenge, and maybe I will also. (I doubt it.) Kept meaning to join in last time but never did. To be honest I could never figure what to select to wear 1 day much less 30? Yet, something in me wants to do this, so I will hang in here and give it some more thought.

lisa, you comment is somewhat enlightening. I don't have 30 items of anything or in any group but I daresay I have 30 different groups. See what a mess. :)

Thanks to the 3 three of you for chiming in.

rachylou. that is an interesting reply. :) Glad to hear from you.

Joy, thanks. I was hoping to hear from you. I know you do challenges from time to time.

I am off grocery shopping now so will be back later to discuss further.

I figure out the colour palette first, then go from there. I switched from a black/white/grey grouping over to a navy/olive grouping earlier this summer. I don't have to start counting pants and tops and making sure i have the right balance - because I don't own more than 30 in any given group anyways. I hang all of the capsule pieces on a separate rolling rack, and away I go!

I did a 30X30 challenge in the spring and agree with Rachylou that 60 days with 30 items may be too much unless you have items that you really want to wear the h--k out of. You might allow 40 or 50 items. You can make your own rules about what to include. If this is your first time doing this, I suggest not including special occasion wear, gear, assessories, or outer wear.
I am planning to do a 30/30 again soon but am thinking of having a "free" day each week to allow wearing other things that I own.
Last time I ended up tweaking to get more variety. I went with neutrals and craved more color so added some red. I went with too many older pieces and craved different silhouettes so swapped out skinny white jeans for white wide legged pants. You may not feel that way.

This is an interesting question! Occasion wear is its own capsule in my closet, so I feel free to exclude it. My 30 items would be for 'routine wear.'

I get little bees in my bonnet, so I make capsules based on the bees... they definitely account for the season. Often involve a colour or colour combo, or some feature, like a bell sleeve or velvet or booties.

But, I have to say that 60 days is a long time to me. I think in 30 day increments, although I do switch out my closet late spring and late fall.

The exact number is not the most important part of this post. When you decide you are going to wear 30 items next 60 days, what do you have in mind when selecting? Will you pick items that you know you will not be wearing after sixty days because of weather, but yet are (perhaps summer or summery) clothes that you want to get a few more wears out of this year? Or do you select newer items, or even older clothes that you know at some point soon, the season, weather , etc will be inappropriate.

When I try to select something to wear, depending on the occasion, I want to wear the most appropriate and what I feel good in. However, that is when the anguish sets it. A very small example: if I have a perfectly good lightweight jacket, I haven't worn in several seasons, I pass by it and select something a little newer or perhaps I like a little better.

Please see what you can do with this crazy question. And hopefully help me get sorted. :)

PS I am dressed and ready to go to a nice Japanese restaurant to celebrate my granddaughter's 25th birthday. ( I didn't ask anyone what to wear), but in trying to decide prompted this post. For the record, I am wearing a pretty blue and coral, cream printed kimino, tan pants, turquoise suede oxfords, and a medium size coral handbag. I think it looks better than it sounds. Sorry, no pics yet.

I can't wait to get some sake and plum wine!
