You could check the Science-y Hair Blog...I think the writer there (who is a scientist) might have a recipe for a solution made with coffee that helps decrease shedding.

This may well be old news but if you're sensitive to sulfates, eliminating them might make a difference.

I was surprised and disturbed by the amount of hair I was finding in the drain after showering and eliminated all hair products containing sulfates. I should have thought of it before, I haven't used toothpaste with sulfates in years because it gave me canker sores, or harsh body soaps, but I didn't think of shampoo

It not only stopped falling out but seems to have recovered.

I am careful with my hair, brushing only when necessary and gently, relying more on combing with a wide tooth wooden comb, and using silicone containing products only on special occasions. I've never colored it, I try to vary my part and I avoid pulling it with styling.

I'm in my 30s and have been struggling with thin hair for years. I don't think it's bad enough that too many other people notice, but I definitely do. And last year, my dad commented on it, which was a serious confidence shaker.

I finally found a dermatologist who took me seriously (after a previous male doctor just shrugged and said, "These things happen sometimes") and put me through a battery of tests. Everything medically is normal, which is both good (yay, healthy!) and annoying (no clear reason that we can address). She put me on a double dose of prenatal vitamins and 2 daily pills of Viviscal, a hair supplement. She recommends the professional strength, but it looks like Amazon isn't carrying it right now and I'm not finding an online vendor I trust who has it, so I'll probably go to one of the other varieties until I can find the pro again (assuming they're still making it).

The supplements seemed to be helping (to the point where my mom commented that she noticed it was looking fuller), though it takes months (at least 3-6) to see progress because hair is slow... and then I set myself back with a medication switch that caused some rapid shedding. I suggested Viviscal to a friend who was dealing with hair loss, and she said it's been helping her, too. Those are just two anecdotal cases, not empirical evidence, but for what it's worth.

I also like BoostnBlend (available on Amazon or on their site) when I'm feeling self-conscious or just want to make it look thicker around my part. It's little fibers that stick your hair by static, in a container like a salt shaker. It doesn't take much and it's very natural looking, and stays put until you wash it out.

I had massive hair loss some time in my 30s and to this day I'm not sure why, we never found out the cause, but my hair eventually grew back. During the interim, I stopped blow drying it, switched to using a comb or fingers rather than a brush, and that seemed to help. As did highlighting /low lighting (changes the texture) and using texturizing shampoos.

My hair dresser also taught me to part my hair asymmetrically -- a "zig zag" part. That helped a lot to disguise the thinning at the part. It also helps to disguise roots growing in between dye jobs. And adds volume.

Example in this article -- see the first pic:

I'm all ears:-(....
I am an ash blonde with highlits and I struggle the same but use a dark (brown) roots(re)coloring spray where the thinning shows the most (around the part or cowlicks) and it colors my scalp, too-which is a great -and so, my hair will look much thicker....but this is not solving the problem, I know....just looking a bit better.

First chance to post since my doctor's visit. He said that many medicines can cause hair loss and coupled with stress (which I have had recently and know from the past that I often have physical reactions to stress) can cause hair loss. If that is the cause, it should grow back. Talking about this was not the reason for my appt. and we often get a bit side tracked during our office visits so did not ask as many in depth questions on this topic as I had planned.

I've been taking biotin for a year, and it seems to have helped. I feel like there is new growth, and my eyebrows are definitely filling back in. My doc also suggested iron. Even though I was within normal range, it was the iron level was lower than is considered optimal for hair growth. I also recently started using Head and Shoulders weekly. I read an article about build up of skin cells and product slowing growth, with the suggestion to work the H&S into your scalp and leave it for a few minutes, then rinse and condition as usual. Hope you have good luck finding a solution. I doubt my hairline is ever going to come forward on the sides, but I wear bangs anyway.

Ack. My hair drastically thinned and got curly when I became type 1 diabetic. I also have thyroid issues that came with hair loss... taking natural thyroid stopped that, but my diabetologist beat me into submission into taking synthroid. My hair thinned again. Someone recommended taking prenatal vitamins to me, and I’ve started trying that. It’s been about a week.

Newish member chiming in here….
I don't have any answers but I do have a similar experience. My always fine but quite copious hair began to thin quite dramatically 1 year ago. I now have roughly 50% of the hair I used to have with no family history of this problem. I am 57 years of age and have been on bio identical hormone replacement for 4 years. I also take a thyroid med for a slightly slow thyroid function. My recent physical and bloodwork shows normal levels in every area that could impact on hair. In my doctor's eyes, I am extremely healthy and she has no explanation for my hair loss other than stress (and truthfully, I have had a very stressful 2 years for many reasons too long to list). I have not tried Rogaine but am about to, as I don't know what else to do. It is a perplexing problem that really upsets me as my hair is so tied in to my physical presence. I am really interested in reading other member's solutions.

I’m thinning on one side more than the other but I think it has more to do with the side I favor while sleeping. I do know when I am stressed ( like recently) I tend to lose larger quantities.
I have not done anything about any of it except try to be conscious about varying sleeping positions.
Good luck - hope YLF Friends’ suggestions pan out.

This is pretty common at your age. I had noticeable thinning all over when hormone replacement was stopped. Even adding a little hormone back in helped the hair, although it was done for bone ( osteoporosis )
I understand that diminished blood flow to hair follicles or something like that can cause thinning. Scalp massage to standing on your head is said to help. I use setting gels and thickening sprays on wet hair after washing, then blowing it out. It feels thicker to me. Using dry shampoo in a pinch may help too. My hair is fine, so something like a salt spray after washing can add texture.
