Here is another variation on the denim shirtdress, if you are interested in a darker shade. This one is also made out of "lyocell", which is the generic name for Tencel and fabrics like it. This one is by Liz Claiborne and is on sale at the moment: (sorry I could not get the picture to post)

http://www.jcpenney.com/liz-cl.....285&c

Here is a wrap-style dress with short sleeves:

http://www.jcpenney.com/liz-cl.....83&am

And here is the Liz Claiborne denim shirtdress in a lighter blue:

http://www.jcpenney.com/liz-cl.....2&cat

Sorry if I overstepped by posting these...I know you did not ask for recommendations but I guess I just got carrier away! Good luck with your summer dress shopping.

The dress certainly looks promising! I like that fabric for hot weather, it feels silky and is quite breathable for me. Tough to tell if the length at below-the-knee is going to look frumpy or not, but my hunch is that it will be fine since the sides come up a bit higher and you're planning to pair with sandals. Just going to have to try it with your shoes and see how you feel! Good on you for looking for these items now before they're all gone. Fingers crossed the dress works out!

I really love both the dress and the skirt. I have a couple of similar dresses and find that even in the summer they work with the sleeves rolled if you are inside most of the day in a/c. You can switch out the self belt for another belt now and then for a different look too.

Is the front hem 36" or the back hem?
I think Angie wore a longer shirt dress the other day, in olive, so I think it should be OK, in theory :)
Do you like wearing collared shirts? I find shirt dresses are kind of the same deal.

It depends on how hot it gets in your neck of the woods. Long sleeves would not be wearable for me in the summer. I really like Tencel (I know some people do not) but the garments I have owned that were made out of it were for cold-weather seasons. Perhaps it comes in several weights, for the various seasons. If I found a shirtdress in a mid-weight Tencel I would definitely be tempted to buy it, because it is a hard-wearing fabric and not prone to wrinkles. I really like your new skirt and look forward to seeing you in it!

ETA -- I just looked at your profile and see you are from Southern California...also noted your favorite shopping stores. I am in Seattle and also shop at these same stores (except we do not have a Stein Mart). Have you tried JCPenney and Kohl's lately? They have a LOT of ladylike dresses, especially JCP, and for the price they just can't be beat. If you are comfortable with shopping online, you can pick up your item for free at a local store and if you don't like it, just return it!

If I am wearing a full skirt or dress, I sometimes wear lightweight bike shorts under the dress/skirt. Also, I have found very short-sleeved tops that look almost sleeveless but the top is cut in such a way that it kind of slants out over the upperarms and covers a lot of my flabbiness there! Kind of like a short-sleeved dolman top...

This dress is from TJX on line. it is tincel. The length is 36 inches, so on me this is just below the knee. this is where I wear skirts and dresses. I have longer legs for my height and I do not think I look stumpy with this length. Since this is a shirt dress do you think it will look weird being this length? I will wear it with flat or low wedge sandals.

I am trying to upgrade my hot weather wardrobe. for the past few years I have waited until our hot weather, usually August thru October. Then things are picked over, so I end up with ill fitting, not flattering, and mostly not stylish junk from mark down racks. These garmets get little wear and donated as soon as it cools off. this year so far I have this skirt, and am looking for not pricy, but better hot weather wear. I am too old for sleevless, shorter shorts, etc. so it is not easy trying to clothe myself in hot weather. Very casual is easier, , but need things for out to lunch, dinner, and other events.
