I am all for bagless freedom! I did it for years but with a 2 yr old and 4 yr old with me at most times, and the accompanying stuff, I am not at the time I can do it much now. I still do enjoy the bagless late night grocery trip though!

Emmanuel Alt does not wear a bag on most days :)

Personally, leaving out the bag is like leaving off my shoes because I love bags SO MUCH. I am into much smaller bags these days those.

I have a husband that keeps wanting me to carry stuff because he likes to go bagless too! :-/ (Outerwear is rare for our weather)

But turnabout is fair play, right? For short trips out, I leave my wallet and keys, sometimes even my phone, at home. Anyone needing to reach me who is a friend or family member knows to call him; a colleague will escalate to the next senior person --- him! --- or know to ask him about reaching me; shared finances mean it doesn't matter who's using the card except for a big purchase that makes a good-sized dent in the credit limit; my sunglasses can be carried as Elly does.

Funny thing about my normal 'just in case' bag stuffers --- I have a stuffed cosmetics case in there, but I hardly ever touch up my lipstick. Once eaten, it stays eaten! It *is* strictly for emergencies.

Janet -- ah yes. Feminine supplies. I don't need those any more. It's only been a year, and I'd forgotten about them! Bonus side effect of no uterus. Ha ha.

Isabel -- your kids can put their gloves/sunblock/other stuff in their OWN backpacks! Problem solved! :-)

Julie -- I know the feeling. I keep feeling like I've forgotten my bag. And then I think, no I haven't! I'm FREE! After years of toting a school bag, then schlepping all the toddler junk, it's kind of refreshing to not need a bag every day. Hopefully I'll get used to it and stop feeling like I've left something important behind.

Claire -- hee hee -- that's never happened to me. I must look more disreputable than you do!

Henley -- I've got really, really good about remembering to take my canvas shopping bags out of the back of the car. There's this tongue-in-cheek Tim Minchin song called "Canvas Bags", where he implores us to remember to bring them when we go shopping, and my kids know all the words. They would sing it whenever I forgot my bags, so then I'd have to go back to the car and get them or else feel guilty about setting a bad example, environmentally speaking.

Mander -- you're RIGHT! Women's coats need more inside pockets. Seriously, my husband never, ever asks me to put anything in my handbag for him. He always has enough pockets for his stuff.

Many of my jackets and sweaters don't have pockets suitable for my cell phone, and when it is in a pocket, it tends to make calls. And I worry about it falling in the toilet. I now use a second pair of glasses to read/use the computer, and that pair is a big deterrent to having a smaller bag. I think I can get buy with toting around less stuff, since I generally don't use that small container of lotion, the small one of Vaseline/Aquaphor, and the two tubes of lipstick. I don't dare remove all the keys, but I'm not sure what some of them are for. . .

I realized recently that one reason why my DH can carry so much stuff without a bag is that men's coats and jackets generally have more pockets. I have only seen one women's coat with an inside pocket, but the suit jacket he wears to work most days has four (!) small internal pockets, so he can easily carry most of the same things that I would carry in a clutch bag.

I like the hands free feeling, too. So I've gone with cross body bags. They hold the essentials, but 1) leave my hands free and 2) don't allow DH and DS to use me as their pack mule. DS is 9, so anything he wants to bring he has to carry. Surprisingly he can get by with very little if I don't carry it for him.

For work, I leave a lot of "stuff" (lotion, advil, cell phone chargers, etc.) in my desk so I'm not toting them back and forth everyday. And other things that I need to carry (disposable shopping bags, coupons) could probably stay in the car. But then I forget them when I go into the stores.

I went bagless for a few years. I would often be stopped stores and asked for assistance (people thought I worked there because I had no purse).

Elizabeth, you and I are bagless twins! My system is exactly like yours for the same reasons. And I don't worry about stuff falling out because most of my outwear has a zippered or deep pockets.

When I'm not wearing outwear with pockets, I have a couple of small, flat leather crossbody bags that just fit my credit-card sized wallet, keys, lipbalm, iPhone, nylon shopping sac, and a few tissues. If it looks like rain, I can hook the strap of my umbrella to the strap or, if it's sunny, clip on my sunglass case.

I do use handbags occasionally, but, more and more I like feeling like toting less around with me and having my hands free.

Isabel, J leaves his Rx sunglasses in the car or at home all the time and then complains about it when he's out. =P He does carry a briefcase to work too, and often uses a messenger bag if he is going to be running around (especially w/o his car) all day.

So how do men who wear glasses and take meds do it ? I LOVE Amy's assessment : maybe these men are all married, hahaaaa. Because it is true, I carry everything for all of us when we are together. And my husband does take a briefcase to work. Mu husband all has more of the attitude that if he needs something he will buy it . But I do carry his meds for him...hmmmmmmm.

My kids are 9 and 11, and I carry sunblock, tissues, headache meds for my son, hats, gloves/mittens, band aids, bug bite spray..... I need to just STOP ! LOL. My mom carried a wallet, tissues, a small rosary, and a lipstick in her bag. My God, how did we live ??????

I hear you on the importance of protecting our prescription shades, Diana! I'm always switching back & forth between my sunglasses & my regular glasses (they have Transitions lenses so they double as sunglasses except they don't darken behind car windshields so I have to switch to sunglasses) & I'm glad I have a hardshell glasses case too.

I have a friend who flushed her driver's license down the toilet in an airport when it fell out of her pocket. Perhaps this is why I'm really leery of putting things in unsecured pockets!

For most days, I carry my wallet/keys/phone, sunglasses, ipad, ipod shuffle, and lunch. Hat/gloves in winter, and sometimes an umbrella. Small random things like kleenex and lip balm. So not a huge amount of stuff but some of it is bulky and definitely requires a larger bag to hold all of it. Even if I don't have the lunch and ipad, my sunglasses are suprisingly bulky. They are giant, prescription (so if I'm wearing them, I still have to carry my regular specs), and expensive (so they are always protected in their bulky, hard case).

I've never carried a handbag. I carry a small, flat wallet & where I live we often need to layer, so I usually have pockets in a jean jacket or vest, etc. I wear jeans or other very casual/gear clothes most of the time--I realize that wouldn't work for many of you but it suits my casual lifestyle. Pockets are a priority for me for my dog training activities. For instance, I love to wear cargo pants & vests so I can carry dog treats, tracking articles, etc. And when I do dress up a bit more, I look for garments with pockets too. And my keys hang from my beltloop on this "Jean Ring". I've had one of these for years & years & it's a great solution for me, with this caveat: they say they work for men or women & that you can just clip it on any garment, but I've tried that & you have to be very careful that it doesn't fall off, so I've found it works best hanging from a beltloop.
http://jeanring.com/

P.S. I'm not a Mom, but I can relate because although I don't carry a handbag, I do usaully have a tote or duffel bag full of dog gear with me, & I drive a minivan because it's a practical rig for dogs. So, I join the Moms here in being envious of those here who can truly "travel light"! But then it's not a burden when the stuff you haul around is for those you love.

I've pared down a lot, but rarely go bagless. For one thing, I wear glasses and switch from prescrip sunglasses to regular glasses and back. And then there are those female necessities, although I may not need to think about those much longer.

I like carrying a bag, strangely enough. It's one more opportunity to add color or texture to an outfit, and I'm just plain used to it. I feel naked without one, like I forgot something.

I don't use a purse. For many many years this system worked great for me--- there are so many benefits.

However, my life has changed a little bit and I am also having to admit the downsides of this approach.

I use a small, flat zippered coin purse as a wallet. It is about the size of a credit card and I use it to carry my DL, CC, and insurance card plus a little cash. It goes in my back pants pocket. I live in a cold climate and wear a jacket or coat a lot of the time, and many of my coats and jackets have deep and/or zippered pockets, which makes me feel more secure. Depending on the weather chapstick, the cell, car and house keys, and occasionally a small pocket knife either go in a coat pocket or in my other jean pockets. Sunglasses go on my head, in my center console in my car, or have an arm tucked under the bridge of my bra through the neck of my shirt. I generally carry a water bottle or keep it in the car. When I am somewhere where I need more things I tend to have a school or work bag or a lunch pail.

The benefits:

1. No keeping track of a purse--- everything important is pretty much on your body and there is little to take on and off.
2. Purses can be heavy--- no weight on your neck.
3. Less fuss/fits my tomboy personality well.

Problems I've run into:

1. I have a script I have to take 3x a day. It isn't a common script and the pills look slightly like X, so I prefer to keep them in their actual bottle (plus then I don't have to remember to refill a smaller pill container or bag each day). I also have migraines, which means more meds I have to carry on my person, and the two f these things makes carrying a water bottle and sunglasses more important.

2. With texting and 3G, cell phones have gotten bigger, and are more and more likely to get damaged by sitting on them and more uncomfortable to put them in a pocket.

3. Since I do not use a cell as a calendar, and still use a checkbook for larger purchases/medical payments (it adds an additional paper trail to large transactions, which gives me some comfort) I occasionally have to juggle a scraps of paper, big and small receipts, an agenda book, and checkbook when out running errands and visiting the doctors. Sometimes I end up juggling things or overstuffing pockets awkwardly to the point I think a purse would be easier.

4. I'm more prone to dropping my sunglasses.

5. The last thing you want in the summer is to sweat through your clothes and soak your cell and wallet. Not that a purse can't be hot and sweaty, but summer clothes are also less likely to have appropriate places to put things. I don't know what to do with myself when I wear a cotton skirt I have, and I have had to put my cell in rice after a ride in a car with a friend whose AC wasn't working in July.

6. I have lost a wallet, twice in 10 years of doing this. Both times it involved wearing a new or unusual garment and finding out the hard way that the pockets aren't as secure as in other clothes. Once it was a pair of jeans where the wallet continuously worked its way out of the pocket, the other was when wearing a dress to a funeral, wearing a sweater with zip pockets, getting cold and unzipping them to put my hands in and forgetting and having the wallet slide out in the car and then getting kicked out by another funeral goer. Both times I've had the wallet recovered and returned to be by a officer or a good Samaritan, sans the cash in it.

I personally am thinking about switching to a purse, but am having time seeing something I could imagine carrying or being able to adapt to it! I am clueless about it.

I have tiny kids, and walk or take transit more than half the time, so I couldn't go bagless. I look forward to the day!

Ah. Well, I'm a west coast suburban mom. I don't go many places without my car. Sadly. (I used to have a life where I could walk everywhere....)

I like the big umbrellas, but I need to always have one at hand because the weather is often so changeable. And if I get wet on my way to Uni or work I'm wet the whole day! I don't have a car and walk everywhere, or take public transport, so I have no choice but to carry it all.

Astrid -- A tiny umbrella is a good idea. Mine is the kind that doesn't fold up and has a hook-shaped handle. If I bring it, I bring it. If I don't, I get wet. I keep a water bottle in the car, but never put one in my handbag. Too heavy!

Amy -- what kind of kids stuff? How old are your kids? That might be a factor. I carried around a backpack full of stuff when my kids were toddlers. I don't need glasses or contact solution, so that helps. I think my makeup bag that's inside my handbag has a tiny Tupperware container with Advil and Tylenol in it.

Zapotee, my handbag IS a crossbody bag. I love it. But I love being FREEEEE even more! I can dash down the street at full speed if I want to.

In fall, winter and spring I carry my umbrella most of the time and I always have a bottle of water with me. Besides that it's also only wallet, keys and phone. I don't really need a big bag, but going without one doesn't work either.

I don't know how you do it. On any given day, I have a bag full of glasses, meds, wallet, kids stuff...and my husband's stuff. I wish men would carry bags so they would stop relying on us to deal with all the bits and pieces, lol.

i used to be purseless...one wallet that stuffed into pockets or better just some id, a credit card and cash. i felt so FREEEEE.

did this until about 3 years ago. had nowhere to stash the keys. now i carry a shoulder bag which is calibrated to carry the minimum amount that includes an ipad.

ps...i still go bagless if i'm out with hubs. no wallet, no keys. just a lipstick if i remember.

I'm afraid I won't be able to join. I need a bag!
ETA: I would just get a cross body bag. That's freedom too!

I am in shock at the prospect, I tell you !!!

I also envy men ( particularly my husband ) who always travels lightly. I say that if you can do it, then do it ! FREEDOM !

I could never do it. Though I will run into a store or appointment with just my wallet and phone..I know that my bag is close by. The truth is that I don't carry bags for style, I carry them because they are useful to me.

IronK- you might not call my tote a handbag if you saw it. The bag that carries books is an HEB cloth grocery bag. Central Market if I'm feeling designer.
