Update: placed an embarrassingly large Everlane order, including the ReNew Anorak in Seaglass. It's beautiful! The colour has some grey to it and can definitely work as a light neutral. It looks great with olive green (which is, like, half of my pants these days), and I think it will be perfect with rust/toffee/brown shades too, and blue or black denim. The cut is perfect over anything with volume: full skirts/dresses, culottes/cropped wide legs, chunky knits. I can see using it over blazers in the fall. Fabric is really nice, not crinkly, has a cottony finish. Definite keeper!

I have a Rains raincoat (not that it ever rains here anymore.... sob...). I like it a lot. Mine's the longer length, unisex XS, and it also comes in hip length. I would get sweaty if I did anything active in it, since it's coated fabric, not breathable. Very waterproof though, and I like the Scandi minimalism. But also, expensive. I debated it for years, since we get so little rain here and I hadn't ever bothered owning a waterproof 'city' jacket...

All that said, I think you might be happier with the Everlane one or a city style from North Face etc.

Cat2 vintage style windbreakers are a pretty big thing right now! There’s a serious secondhand market for the OG 80s ones from Lands End, LL Bean, Champion, Nike, Patagonia, etc.

Also, I’m from Vermont; Burton is my hometown’s contribution to “cool” and my social milieu is largely ski bums, hiker trash, and gear heads. If I started dressing NY-cool or LA-cool people would call me a flatlander.

Thank you for pointing out that I had not adequately defined my terms. What I meant by looking cool was, “not purely functional”. Purely functional windshell below. The cool thing about it is it weighs less than two ounces!

Well, you did ask for a “cool” look, thus my response. I have one Land’s End jacket that looks stylish but I am convinced it was completely accidental on their part. The last time I recall them managing this feat was in the 80s.

La Ped, that is the BEST description I've ever seen for NE spring weather!

I have received and am considering the EB cinnamon/rust
colored coat Joy posted, and it does not meet your requirements, but I thought I'd comment on it in case others are interested. First of all it's completely sold out, although there is a companion shorter jacket still available. (Again, not quite what you want La Ped.) I don't know if EB brings back styles after they sell out. It's waterproof and the fabric is not quite lightweight enough to be "packable" although it is "breathable" ... it's a raincoat more than a windbreaker. The coat is a fairly slim fit, so on me I get a roomy shoulder fit with a close upper thigh fit, which is why I'm not sold on it yet. Typical great quality as EB always is. The jacket comes in several colors including an olive and a hunter green.

I recently bought and love the BR commuter jacket in navy- been wearing it everyday since- perfect for Spring weather in NJ- It looks just as nice wearing to work ( business casual) as it does on the weekends with joggers/jeans.

https://bananarepublic.gap.com.....ge-content

I recently saw the North Face City Breeze rain parka in a pretty light green color- if I didn't already own the BR commuter- would probably try this one

https://www.backcountry.com/th.....311&a

I like the fact that they have a inner adjustable tie for the waist- you can leave completely loose or cinch in for waist definition.

Okay, I'll have to go peruse some of these euro brands. Fjallraven has one that I've looked at before, but it's a little more than I want to spend on a seasonally-limited piece.

New England weather is so weird and tricky. In theory, the temps are sweater weather. But if it's been raining, the damp air means I want a sweater PLUS a puffy layer PLUS something on top of that. Unless I'm running, then I'm in a long-sleeve tee with maybe a windshell on top, and that's fine. The niche I'm trying to fill is more standing around at the-park watching kids / it always rains on farmers market day / in the sun it's hot but in the shade there's still snow / holy crap the wind is ten times stronger on the beach. :)

There is really no reason for me not to try out the Everlane anorak. The price is reasonable, the colours make me happy, and they do a good job designing outerwear that works over big chunky knits and such. The thing about a lot of technical brands is they cut their outerwear to be worn over technical mid-layers, not oversized cotton sweaters.

As far as brands go, and gear vs not-gear, I consider "stylish" to be a property of the wearer, not the label. And functionality has more to do with the individual garment than who made it or its intended use. So on one hand, department store cashmere sweaters make great mid-layers for winter hiking, and fine cotton dress shirts make can serve as sun layers for desert hiking or sunny paddle trips. Conversely, Tevas and Chacos are cute, comfortable, functional sandals that also happen to be trending, so why not wear them around town *and* on camping trips? I might avoid shopping certain brands for ethical reasons, but otherwise I try to keep an open mind and leave "no stone unturned" as Angie would say.

The last time I hunted for a rain coat was a bear. I do not want anything that makes noise and most make a crunchy sound. I finally got a white coat with a hood at REI and it is their brand. If you travel much get a dark color or black. I had one I loved before I lost too much weight to wear it. It was also REI and black but not completely waterproof. It got soaked through in Venice. B lack will blend in in any big city and can be dressy enough for a funeral and graveside services in the rain. This is one coat that you want to be roomy enough to layer under and. be able to wear zipped up. Also look at the pockets. They can be important.
I see you in Earth tones like olive or grayish browns, or rust, but maybe for spring you would like something light or bright. My favorite spring coat is olive or orange or a bone white.

I also love that fishtail hem and am always tempted to buy one of these jackets for the approximately three days a year I need one. LOL I end up either in straight up gear, or my Burberry trench.

Athleta used to do some great jackets for this in-between need, but lately they’re kind of disappointing me (I’m also worried about what I’ll do when my favorite hiking pants from them bite the dust because they no longer make anything nearly as nice — new fabric is scratchy, and everything seems to be leggings or joggers otherwise).

Predictable it may be, but I really love those Everlane styles for you.

Wow, it looks like there is a divide between Team Gear and Team Fashion. I only shop gear brands reluctantly, and for as few items as humanly possible.

This is the one I use, from NAS a few years ago, but worth checking the brand. We tend to have chilly rainy early springs, and it's dressy enough to wear everyday, not just weekends.

I have been looking at Fjällräven jackets for my hickings / spring walks. Very expensive, but they known to last for a very long time!

I have no suggestions, only commiseration on chilly spring and EEP! This is normal for your area? Yikes.

ETA Fjällraven, which minaminu just mentioned, is great. I also like Royal Robbins, and have seen it at REI. Here’s one example from a store here. https://www.globetrotter.de/ro.....5637737185

I actually think it makes sense to stick with these outerwear brands. My mom always used to buy jackets from Nordstrom, brands like Hilfiger or Cole Haan or whatever— and I inherited them when she passed. They are annoyingly non functional! Water resistant not repellent; lint magnets; not enough pockets etc.

But I like them. I tried one on (the shawl collar) and adored it, but couldn't really justify. It's not probably as crushable as you'd like anyway. Alas.

This is the sort of thing we need this time of year. I generally use the outer layer of my 3-in-1 Patagonia if I'm in town or a bright yellow North Face shell if I'm on the trail and accept that both are rather geary. If it's just drizzling and I want to make an effort, I'll use my lightweight Theory trench with a wide brimmed hat. I have a Rains parka that is great looking but not at all breathable. True of many of the options that fit the bill for this weather, but I'm not a fan: if you break even a little bit of a sweat, they're clammy.
