Can I just chime in to say that I have this exact jacket in a beautiful royal purple, that I finally resigned to the consign pile on my recent closet cleanout, because I found the colour hard to style a bit but more importantly because the style just felt too classic and stuffy for me. I could have paired it with a number of pencil skirts for unexpected colour combinations (mustard, olive) or jeans, but somehow it just looked too conventional and traditional on me and made me feel dowdy. The overly classic vibe somehow doesn't feel quite right on you, too, if I'm being honest - and maybe that's why you're finding it hard to style? Just my two cents - feel free to ignore if you love it

Suz, I'm going to be very frank. Its clear you aren't feeling right in this. I also think your styling choice makes it hard to assess. You have paired a intensely bright jacket with softly colored counterparts of a different intensity. It is hard to style intensely pink items. IMO, getting the look right seems harder than with some other shades that are more forgiving. I think this is because pink is being used for an item that we typically reserve for neutral status.

Having said that, The color of this blazer is attention drawing gorgeous, but I personally think you look better in a slightly different shade of pink. I'm not saying it's a bad color for you, it isn't, but this is a lot of color for it to not be exactly right. You need to own it and feel beautiful in it, because it's such an attention grabber.

The style of the jacket is harder for me to comment on. It doesn't look masculine on you at all. I think the fit looks good. I am not sure it looks heavy, or stiff as I have seen in other comments. I think you should play with it more before you make any decisions, but given what you wrote, I think you should return it if you can.

OK, I've been thinking about this a bit more and want to backpedal a bit.

Maybe this pink jacket is bearing too much freight to get a fair assessment? You love the colour, the fit is good, and returning could be an issue. With that in mind, might your assessment change if you stop thinking of this jacket as a replacement for your inexpensive fuchsia workhorse or as a "wear-with-anything" wardrobe piece?

Can you see tossing it on (sans the gold buttons--and loving approprio's suggestion of vintage black glass or graphic black and white!) over a column of neutral at a mid-winter event? Or as a fresh look with white/cream/taupe next spring when you are sick of winter? Does your assessment change when see the jacket as an embellishment instead of a workhorse?

The color is fantastic on you! It definitely pops compared to some of your other items. And I think the fit is great too. But I agree with others that something about the styling seems off, particularly with the rolled up pants. I'd love to see it with some crops or flares actually.

My immediate thought was - lose those buttons! Then I read the thread and saw your comment. Lose those buttons!

Yeah, yeah, that's a load of buttons. I'd get a tailor to do it if only for the right placement on the cuffs. I say shop around for the right trimmings to make it really sing. Vintage black glass would be nice, or graphic black and white.

Suz, I haven't read through the responses at all, but my immediate reaction is this:

- the colour really does suit you
- it looks surprisingly good with those pants! (which I want to steal, by the way)
- the cut is a little more boyish than your usual, but the colour is so non-boyish that I think with styling you can make it more "your" style
- lose the gold buttons :-)

(As a general rule, I feel that gold buttons only work with neutral-coloured blazers)

You have to love it, Suz........that's my only advice.

With Canadian online orders and store purchases past the return date they take things back and issue a gift card. But, this could be an issue for a US return since US gift cards are useless in Canada. Also, Canadian gift cards can only be used in store, not online.

Captain Obvious would say.....don't buy from the US again. ;)

On the run this morning, but here are my impressions:

Hurrah for the pink! It's a big yes

The buttons should go, with maybe burnished metallic or tortoishell in their place -- easy switch

Love the Annie Lennox vibe (shout out to Shevia). What about a v-neck tie blouse, with the tie end draped, not in a bow?

Or what about Bowie reinvents his school blazer? Or just embracing the prep by popping the collar and wearing a striped crew neck sweater, or a button down, underneath. When you go Prep, go BIG!

Take a hippie/arty tack: What about this over your flowy, architectural sleeveless dresses . The length of the jacket might be a bit long for this, but it might work with heeled booties.

What about mixing it with looser, wider leg pants? I could see it with a JCrew crew neck sweater, with the sweater and jacket sleeves layered and scrunched, jacket collar popped, flowy wide leg trousers and heeled booties or oxfords. The trousers would have to drape, though, to offset the structure, and the sweater would need to be relaxed through the torso. Think Kate style trousers (but I'm guessing these aren't already in your closet -- I do think Kate trousers and a t-neck would work for you, btw).

You sound like you might be "trying too hard to like it"...which is something I do a lot and I've learned to listen to that voice carefully. I agree with Angie - do your homework and see how you feel after that. It does look very classic to me, although not the color. And ask yourself if a <something else> would a better add to your wardrobe too. It does look fabulous on you so no questions in that department if you decide to keep If you have truly missed the return window then you get to wear it (if you want) before passing it on. Or maybe it's the material--too stiff?

I looked closely at this jacket when Angie decided against it, and realized that the '70s blazer styling could be slightly difficult for a petite or delicately boned woman to wear: the patch pockets, wide-ish lapels, and relatively long length make it challenging. But that color on you! What a treat to wear during a long dreary Winter! I think you will make it work. A navy v-neck, maybe one with a self-tie or scarf, and those flared jeans someone suggested, with heeled boots? A silvery metallic sweater and white jeans or gray woolen pants? You probably just need to play with it for a time to see what's best.

So--- if you already loved it, not much would matter.

But when I play" outfit lab" ( or blazer lab), this jacket reads too....? Heavy, conservative, boxy- long. I agree with the comment on slightly overwhelming you. Length, thickness, pocket flaps etc.
The color- to me this is not your absolute best lotta pink, but it is a happy color and that wouldn't matter if the cut were better. Either in a jacket or let's say, if it were a fab pea coat.
Maybe other tops & bottoms will do the trick as suggested. I'd also get out all the jackets you currently love and see if more clarity emerges.
This is not intended as super negative. It's more that when I see the pics, I somehow am NOT struck with, oh, you MUST get this- so there's something going on there.

Karen, thank you! I think if I return it should be okay -- I can take it to the border and mail, but then we'll have to do some sort of money transfer again, since the money would go back to you. I'll let you know.

I saw that you got the houndstooth one instead and loved it on you!!

I may be past the return window, though -- it arrived when I was away. I will look at the receipt and maybe contact them. And first I'll do homework.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Very good points and it is helpful to hear your thoughts. My gut is telling me I won't wear this enough -- something about it just isn't making me happy even though I adore the colour.

I love it on you, Suz! I actually ended up returning mine - which was very hard to do since the fit was absolutely perfect. I tried the matching pants (in the smallest size I usually take) but they were too big. I decided I didn't want to do the pantsuit thing so I didn't try to re-order them in a smaller size (probably wasn't available anyway). I was going to keep it but I ended up exchanging it for the brown houndstooth blazer with elbow patches, which I totally fell in love with.

Try some different stylings with it. If you do decide to return it, let me know if I can help - you can always mail it to me and I can return it to my local store.

Hi Suz, I think that if you are not sure, then you are unlikely to feel like a million in it going out ... That said, I think you should do your homework assignment; if you find a winning outfit, keep it; if not, return and find another statement piece that will be more wearable for you

I think the color is fine, but the proportions are off for you. If you wore it with the matching pants, it would probably be look fine because the color break wouldn't be there. Without the matching bottoms, you're left with a color break in an odd place. You deserve a 10, no need to settle for less.

I love the color! It looks beautiful with your hair. And I also love it with the turtleneck. I think you need trendy footwear and accessories to make it work for you. It will work with classic accessories as well if you want to present yourself that way from time to time.

Also can you immerse yourself in J Crew styling. Shirt cuffs extended long beyond the sleeves, a semi tuck, cropped pants or jeans, dramatic glasses...

Suz, if it's just the buttons that bother you, can you change them for a more suitable set as long as the fit is good and you like the jacket?

Una, Gaylene -- these are great questions. The colour totally does it for me -- I have no problem with that, and wow, do I ever smile at the sight of this in my closet!! I'm just not completely happy with it ON me -- which is very different to how I feel in my other jackets, or even to how I felt with the cheapo H&M knit version I had several years ago (and wore to death).

I think it might be the traditional gold buttons. Not that they are gold but they have all that traditional anchor thing going on on them, too.

Hmmm. I will play some more and see, but may well return it. I did get it on sale so it was not a huge investment (considering the quality.)
