I also have a pair of velvet pants I want to wear in new ways. They are a jeans cut, with fairly wide legs, and are a purple/maroon color. I’ve always worn them with some kind of creamy/neutral sweater on top (yawn!). They are just barely long enough, so most of my boots don’t work with them :/

I feel that I have been neglecting my larger necklaces and earrings and bracelets in recent years. I can't tell if my style has changed or if it has more to do with practical challenges of having them in my way for more of the time due to different life circumstances. I'm not sure how permanent those changes will be....

Do folks have any advice for knowing the difference between lack of opportunity and lack of interest?

I hoard my better things and my newer things: Sometimes they get old and dated before they get worn

For me, too, "having no opportunity to wear it" is an oft-heard excuse. I realize that I *could* upgrade my viewpoint regarding the type of clothing or level of formality that is appropriate in nearly every aspect of my life. In nearly every instance, a dressier or more pulled together standard of dress would be acceptable, were I willing to upgrade my outfit.

I hope you get good use out of your velvet pants--this seems like the ideal season to wear them!

I definitely have things I seldom wear/use but that I still love. I have a number of vintage Coach bags that I've thrifted and then repaired, washed and reconditioned. The ones I don't use usually don't have a long strap, or are too small to be practical.

Good question!

I'd say about a third of my wardrobe is in regular use throughout the year, but the items I'm wearing vary from year to year. I prefer to treat it as a working resource rather than expect everything to pull its weight, so I'm always happy to give space to something if it feels relevant. That said, I always wonder if I'm holding onto things when I probably shouldn't.

I'm happy to keep hold of

things with very specific uses which are invaluable once or twice a year, such as rain boots. Used infrequently but I would not want to be without them.

trophy pieces which had a lot of wear in the past, now worn only occasionally to preserve them, such as the VW pirate boots.

items which don't fit my style for now but I can see myself coming back to. Particularly pleased I held onto the embellished jeans, velvet blazer, ruffled blouse etc.

items with certain practical limitations (eg they're not good for bicycling) but I will reach for given the opportunity.

However, there's also a handful of things which are hanging around and I should just get rid of them.

I keep thinking I'll figure it out, but signs are I won't;

I want to like it and try to wear it but it always feels a bit wrong for some reason;

I've worn it and liked it in the past, but now

it's worn out and I should admit it.

it just doesn't love me anymore.

I put it on and it never looks quite the way I imagine it.

---

ETA: If an item doesn't feel current, my question is always: is it classic enough to work with items that are? If the answer is no, how long will it take before it comes back around again? Am I prepared to wait that long?

Five years? Ten? It has to be worth the wait.

Yes, there are still things I hesitate to wear for just staying at home working at my desk. Comfort wins out or I just think about having to do special laundry just because I wore my "good" clothes so I opt for a tee and jeans. Things I miss wearing MOST are my sweaters. It's just not cold enough to wear them often so I can't purchase anymore until what I have is either worn out or no longer in style. I have 4 cashmere sweaters that I love but only get to wear maybe once or twice in a season. They are now 3 years old I believe so I've gotten maybe 3-4 wears out of only some of them. UGH! Not exactly a good CPW for me. It would take another ten years or so to justify their cost.

My area is growing - even though in the immediate walkable area there is really only one place to "go" for lunch and it's not exactly a "cafe" or a place to dress up, quite the contrary in fact- but I feel okay wearing what I consider my better clothes - a silk tee or white twill jeans, etc.

About 30 mins. away there are quite a few places that have opened to visit for lunch/shopping so that is improving the "urban" need. We also head out for a weekly shopping/lunch trip most weeks to another city area about 45 min. drive, but it's beautiful scenery for the most part and the reward is a good place to eat and nice shopping. The traffic there reminds us why we make that long drive.

I am trying to keep such things at minimum. Until a few years ago I had a lot of pieces of clothing that I liked but that I wore very rarely because they did not suit my lifestyle/climate/fashion persona. Now I am trying to build a moderate wardrobe made of things that get worn "the heck of". I do have a couple very elegant pieces that get worn once/twice a year, and I am ok with that. As per your question, I think that velvet pants are very versatile. You can wear them with anything: pullovers, sweatshirts, silk blouses, sporty or dressy jackets ...

LOL, Style Fan, story of my life! I really like where I live (every time I try to actually live in a metro area for a few years, I end up depressed -- it's the constant noise and lack of real darkness), but the trade-off is not being able to walk to cafes.

The things that I tend not to wear as much as I'd like to are things that need extra care: silk, cashmere, blazers. I'm actually wearing my silk midi skirt today! With sneakers and a hoodie to dress it down.

Yes! Big sigh. I live in a rural place and I am an urban person. Well sort of. I have clothes that never get worn. I don't count special occasion outfits because they go in a different category.
I need to put on one of my favourite outfits and sit at a cafe, read a book and drink an expresso. It would quite a drive to do this.

Yes! I plan events so I can wear some of these things more. Join groups that dress up for meetings, get symphony or theatre season tickets, host a neighborhood cocktail party.
For the velvet pants, you might consider them for loungewear...maybe Christmas. If they are black or brown, they could be dressed down in an English countryside way with boots.

Sigh. The answer is a resounding yes. I have the special occasion items, but I always knew they would be worn only for very specific events so I don't count them. I count the items that I am "saving" for some undefined event. I am genuinely trying to re-teach myself to wear my favorites. It takes time.

Your velvet pants sound luscious. Velvet is certainly huge right now. Have you considered going to pinerest and looking for ideas there? That is always my first step when I am trying to incorporate a new silhouette, color, or item.

Do you have things you love but seldom wear? For me it is mostly no occasion to wear them. this includes dresses, dressier shoes, coats and jackets. This fall/winter season I am trying new combinations, and ways to get some wear out of a few things like dresses, a short velvet blazer, short white faux fur jacket, and black velvet pants. These things are a few years old, and may not look very current, but I am having fun trying to pair them with newer items, or wearing them in new ways. Tomorrow I am wearing a just above knee dress with nude ph and burgundy booties. When it is cold enough, I will wear the jackets with jeans (maybe?). Any ideas about ways to wear the velvet pants? (they are old wider legs) I am keeping them as I love velvet and they fit well..
