It’s interesting for sure. I have looked up Everlane but not purchased from them - or Quince.

I also haven’t bought Shein or Temu. But I certainly have plenty of things made in China.

Angie- I’ve never heard anything about quince financial situation, and from what I’ve read it’s ownership and how/who actually works for the company is pretty secretive. And of course there’s the fact that they now sell food, and suitcases and furniture But from what I can tell, the spend a lot on marketing, and it’s pretty stealth as well. They have also broadened their focus and will now “rebrand” Quince products with your/any label.

kkards, interesting! Do you know if Quince is in financial trouble? Shein might buy Quince.

Irina, soooo agree that Muji and Uniqlo are VERY similar! In fact, I wonder how Muji survives with Uniqlo around Personally, I find Everlane's offerings sufficiently different to Uniqlo and Muji. Not as basic. More colour and pattern. Larger fabric assortment. More attention to design detailing, and of course - as you mentioned - they do shoes, and are more expensive! My clients have better luck at Everlane than at Uniqlo, generally. That said, it might ALL change soon as result of this buy-out.

Ket, thanks for the detailed explanation! Appreciate your point of view. Chip as chips is dead right As for the design integrity - YES! Shein ads frequently come across my screen, and their sense of design can be compelling.

Kkards, I think, the middle ground retail suffered big loses and its market now is less competitive. Other fast fashion giants have their mid level brands like COS and Arket, Massimo Dutti. They do rather well. Maybe SHEIN wants a base for their mid range offerings. And under a different name.

So I’ve been listening/reading more about the sale this weekend because as someone who works in retail I’m interested in what this says about the general state of the business/market. I I guess for me, I understood why Everlane would be sold -and probably Shein was the only/best offer, but not why Shein would want to buy it. And one of the most interesting things I’ve heard was that Shein wants the data. Now exactly what data, that was a little fuzzy, but if Shein is watching Quinces growth, especially into the US middle class market, and are trying to move/position themselves in that market, then this makes sense.

From what I've read Everlane had serious debt problems...and as others have said it's a greenwashing opportunity for Shein. Everlane CEO claims nothing will change...but it's hard to believe that. I haven't purchased from either company but have been curious about Everlane as I read mostly good things here about their clothes.

I agree with Irina about “too much stuff for a sustainable brand” being an issue, but then brands are in business to make money and therefore they need to make clothes and get us to buy them! If they truly became more sustainable in terms of making less in an over saturated market then they may not earn anything much and therefore go out of business?

Sad but not surprising. I stopped buying from them in the last couple years. I find their products are similar to Uniqlo and Muji but more expensive. With a few exceptions like some shoes and underwear. Also, they over saturated the market, too much stuff for a sustainable brand.

For now I’ll use it as a opp to pick up a few everlane items. Not convinced the quality will remain even if it does align SHEIN with the overall trend of green washing.

Yes I have been reading about this too. I have seen plenty of Shein items donated and can usually identify them by the feel. I don't accept them and generally don't put them in the stores (along with Primark and a few other brands). It is sad but not surprising that Everlane sold out. Sorry to be dark, but I assume greenwashing until proven otherwise.

I find it all a bit sad really, Everlane's majority stake owner was (SURPRISE!) a private equity firm and they are the ones selling to Shein due to faltering sales and a high debt load. I guess its really difficult trying to be a sustainable brand when competing with cheap ultra fast fashion and a consumer market struggling with affordability. What does this means for Everlane going forward? I have no idea, but I have my doubts that it will be all that sustainable.

I'm not incredibly clued up about these issues. I have mostly shopped second hand for eleven years. I occasionally see a Shein item in the thrift stores and the quality has been horrible. Never seen an Everlane item anywhere. My thought is if Everlane is a company with real integrity would they sell to a company with a rep like Shein?

Angie, I purchased Shein out of curiosity a couple months ago. I purchased a jumpsuit and 2 dresses. The black dress (see photo) was actually quite lovely, but I returned everything. The quality wasn't horrific but it wasn't amazing. (I realize the absurdity of saying that given it's a $20 polyester dress ha!) I would rather spend my money purchasing secondhand, clearance, or sale items. For me it has zip to do with sustainability; I just prefer higher quality items. Though said black dress still calls to me occasionally!! It is a really unusual style I haven't found elsewhere.

Shein jewelry is nice for costume! It's not high quality jewelry but I've gotten some amazing looking pieces from Temu and Shein. Their earrings are not hypoallergenic, which bothers my ears after a few days of wearing in a row. Still, I do like using them for fashion/costume jewelry, especially for an event. And cheap as chips!

Agreed, kkards. How low will they go? :} I think Everlane was cleverly marketed in terms of sustainability. However, I do know a lot of people loved the quality of their items. From a purely marketing standpoint, I agree with Angie: super, duper smart acquisition and business move by Shein! It will be very, very interesting to see how the Everlane quality holds up after acquisition.

YES! I saw this a few days ago, kkards. IMO, Shein could do with a very sustainable brand under its umbrella. Like Everlane. The ironic acquisition is strategically brilliant. Green washing for Shein.

I continue to support Everlane as long as it has "the goods". Hubs Greg's favourite tees are from Everlane. I just bought a fantastic sweatshirt from Everlane. I have cashmere knitwear from Everlane that is old and fabulous. NO PILLING! Those are the goods I'm after.

To your point, it will be interesting to see what will happen to both brands. I have yet to see a Shein item in person. I'm curious! My 21 year old goddaughter who lives in South Africa has friends that buy and wear a lot of Shein items. It works for them!

First thought is Oh No! It seems impossible to avoid Shein’s presence, they advertise so heavily, as does the even newer Temu. I have avoided buying from either as the ultra fast cheap nature of the products makes me feel someone is being treated badly somewhere. However when my DD1 brought home 3-4 items for me she got in a clothes swap early last year, one was a black and white Shein jacket which is actually quite nice, although I have not worn it yet. It’s really similar to the black and white swing coat I have, in its pattern, so I guess that’s why she thought I would like it.
I enjoy playing a tile matching game on my phone, and one of the ads is for a Shein “capsule wardrobe” with an AI stylist which the ad claims has 500,000 plus users!? I prefer Angie as a stylist!

Shein buys Everlane, a union of ultrafast fashion and 'affordable luxury'

https://www.npr.org/2026/05/22.....s-everlane

Well not 100% sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, despite Everlanes radical transparency claim, I never felt they were. On the other hand I felt like they did deliver quality that was aligned with their retails.
Now I admit I’ve never shopped let alone bought anything from SHEIN, but based on reputation I’m left wondering what this will mean for both brands
Thoughts?
