I hear you on the heavy hair problems! My hair is super-thick and when it was shoulder length, it was too hot to wear down half the year so I just kept pinning it up and suffering the associated issues. Cutting it off was a great decision for me for that reason!

I'm reassured that it seems like most of us have similar summer dressing issues though.

I'm the odd one out here in that I really like summer. Good thing too since I live in the SW and we have very hot summers. Like Mo, I usually depend on cute sandals, bracelets (I prefer wrap bracelets because I have small wrists and cuffs usually move around too much), and maybe earrings. I wear more patterns and graphic tees/tanks in the summer to bring some interest to my outfits.

I hear you on that. Summer dressing is comparatively boring to me as well, and my typical formula is to just wear a dress. Dress + sandals + interesting handbag/clutch + sunglasses. I can't stand jewelry, not even a bracelet, against my skin when it's hot & sticky out. And I can't stand pants of any type, even linen, because of the waistband, because my waist, not just my feet, will bloat in the summer heat. So at least you have found a formula that provides more mix-and-match variety. If it were me, I'd simply duplicate that top and those pants in several different colors and then call it a day!

As for the hair, look at the bright side: if you had fine & thin hair like mine, you'd have to deal with the unpleasantry of a sunburned scalp. Hats can help but they often fly off in the wind, or make you feel hot. I do wear head scarves on the beach and to exercise, but I don't look fashionable in them, because my head is oddly shaped. I don't care because it beats a sunburned scalp any day!

I would love to move to warmer, beachier climes -- but then I stop to pause when I consider the fashion implications.....

I think you are very very smart to write down your thoughts about summer dressing. it's so easy to forget what real heat feels like, when you're in the comfort of spring. Very handy for packing for a southern vacation as well, if that's something you do. I was tihnking this yesterday, when I was in purging mode and wearing a very fluid tank top - when I'm wearing a tank top, I don't want anything except the shoulders to be touching me! Fitted ones - out you go. This is why my workhorse tanks are years old I think - purchased when fluid was fashionable the last time, and still worn because they are what I want to wear in the summer.

Add me to the list of those with toes that refuse to be ocntained once set free. I usually push this until mid-late September.

I think the key to summer dressing is great shoes. I think this explains (justifies?) why I have the same number, if not more, shoes for the three months of summer as I do for the rest of the year. I'm actually enjoying the simplicity of summer dressing this year - maybe there's a mental relief of not having to "complete" an outfit, because you just can't wear more, nor is anybody expecting it. I'm accumulating a few quite nice summer tops now, after years of my summer wardrobe being well fitted tees, and its working for me.

And last but not least, you loos GREAT. That top is exactly what I'm talking about - appropriate (for the heat), fashionable, wonderful colour... and you have great shoes. Sorted.

You all crack me up. Glad I am not the only one who feels perplexed (and rather annoyed) by really hot weather dressing. Of course I might have felt that way about really cold weather dressing too ... I'm still figuring out my wardrobe, so hopefully next year I will have a better grip on things. But today ... today I will take your collective advice and wear a dress, a print, and/or loose linen. All week it's supposed to be right around 100F/40C, so I'll have plenty of time to experiment with everyone's suggestions.

You're sending me your weather today! Really, you didn't have to do it. No, really, that's quite alright. No, no, really......take it back!

Hee. I lived in Tulsa for two summers. I absolutely adored March and April. They are full of gentle showers and tulips and gorgeous magnolias and azaleas! July and August? Indoor months for sure!

We've been fortunate this year, and, apparently, my weather is supposed to moderate back to 75 by Wednesday. Which is good. Because I'm taking the kids to the County Fair, and I don't want to look at the Hogs when I'm sweating!

Love your heat-proof looks. Lightweight, fluid, deep but colorful, modern shoes. You made a great choice.

I second the value of cool prints for looking fresh on hot days!

Oh, I hear you about your head and toes.

One reason I wear my hair short is that it is so thick and heavy -- wearing it back and up in our summers gave me horrid headaches. I just couldn't bear it. Even though summer is very short here.

And I am fully with you on sandals over 80 degrees. Before that, actually, if it is humid.

I think you look great in this outfit. But I do understand. This is the first year summer dressing has ever felt like fun to me. I am sure part of that is that the weather has been so much cooler than usual!!

It has been a cool summer here, thankfully, but I hear ya on sandals! Once summer comes, I don't want to wear anything but sandals!

I basically go from air conditioned house, to air conditioned car, to frigid office and back again. But still, it feels hot. No way to explain it. :).

And yes, hear you on the hair, too. Mine is thick and heavy and does not like to be worn up. The strands are fine and soft, so they escape darn near everything. Combine that with the weight . . . And yeah, ponytails all the way as they are easy to redo.

What Gigi said! You look great, lovely colours and styley shoes.
If you have dresses that would be comfortable then I would wear them - sometimes you can save things for "good" and by the time "good" comes along they are out-dated. We don't have the extreme heat here for long and I love it when it is here so I just adore wearing my lightest things.
Another look that is popular in many parts of the world is very light kaftan tops with long sleeves in cotton, they could be worn with shorts or capri's or even a skirt. I have a couple of these tops and I do actually find them cool and breezy in the heat.

You are dressed quite well for the summer heat & look quite stylish!
In most Asian countries that experience hot summers (India, Myanmar etc) also have certain cultural expectations and depending on your town you may not be able to wear shorts and tanks. The women here tend to favor natural fabrics like cotton & linen to keep cool. I have a couple of blazers in linen that I wear during summers for my Office AC environment. I also like to wear palazzo pants with cotton tops for summers as way to stay cool yet covered. And of course printed dresses & skirts are always an option, coming up with a 3rd piece can be difficult at times so prints are a good option like Sharon suggested.
Hair despite being tied up can get messy. I have to walk a bit to reach office and the heat means hair is damp & sweaty. I have found dry shampoo to be a good solution to deal with it quickly.

Makes sooo much sense! Your post is helping me realize why I have SOOO many printed/patterned summer tops! desperation for interest in the heat. I am in the Deep South so it is often too hot for shoes, hairstyles or accessories of any kind. I feel the same way about putting my hair up but then getting headache or neckache! I love your purple and like how you did a light layer despite the heat.

Well, just look at any of my WIW for the last 4 months and you'll see how I deal with any heat over 80, most over 90, and humid. All 'style' has to come from my shoes, or drape of my outfit, or a cuff on my wrist.

Lol! Real heat is such a, ahem, witch to dress for/live in. I think you look great, not frumpy: the gauzy top makes it magic but even without the topper, everything fits you & flatters you, so you still look styled. :)

I am so with you on scarves, hair (though luckily mine is on the thinner side & still short so I can wear it up all day w/o any pain unless a bobby pin goes rogue), and necklaces. In fact, I started wearing brooches as a response to the heat! I wanted a 'third piece' that didn't touch me. However, my feet are permanently cold & never sweat, so I don't need to wear open toed sandals until it hits 98ish. I hate getting dust or dirt on my feet, especially my toes, so I wear close toed but still ventilated options as much as possible.

I like how printed tops add some extra interest and dresses tend to look put together all on their own, which is really nice (except my obsessive desire to keep my arms out of the sun means I add a cardigan whenever I'm outside anyway *sigh*). Oh and I look for woven blouses w added details (maybe a yoke seam or ruffles or something) to create more interest too. But my style is frillier than yours, so I don't know if that'd work for you! Perhaps look at some Asian hot weather looks for extra inspiration? The Wild West isn't much help, as 19th century women must have been SO miserable. *shudder*

Actually, MG, I really like your outfit and don't think it looks frumpy at all. The purple color is gorgeous in its own right, plus it matches your natural coloring beautifully. And the sandals are great too. The topper is kind of gauzy, which contrasts with the more tailored, straight-cut bottoms.

I am like some other posters in that once my feet are in sandals, that is where they stay until it is clearly too cold!

It can be so difficult to look stylish in the summer. I think sometimes the best we can do is select colors that look very good on us, make sure the fit is excellent, make sure the proportions are good, and add a pair of sandals as fashion forward as we can tolerate while still having them not tear our feet up.

You look far from frumpy in that gorgeous purple colour! It doesn't get that hot here, but it did last week. I lived in sandals pretty much. I'm jealous of your thick hair but I understand how it can get hot. I am preferring loose loose loose when it does get hot - ie BF shorts or pantaloon short, loose skirts and dresses. I can't stand cling in the heat.

I don't think you look frumpy in the least! The color of your tank looks fantastic on you. You look quite stylish with your hair up, the tank, your linen pants, and your sandals, even without the scarf. Nevertheless, I hear you. Summer is my least favorite season to dress for. Suz said something the other day in a thread along similar lines to what Sharon was getting at; I wish I could find it - I liked it so much. I can't remember all of it, but it was about how hard it is for some of us to dress for the summer season, especially when it comes to not being able to use the magical third piece because of higher temps; not having it means not feeling like the outfit looks finished. That said, I have tried to make my peace with comfortable, well-fitting shorts and brightly colored tees. It's not my favorite look, but with sandals, it's fine for most days, and at least it's relatively cool to wear.

Hang in there. You're most assuredly not alone.

Ha, Claire and lyn, now I have visions of you feet running away from you and your closed toed shoes!

Sharon, you're right about print tops ... they do make things easier in the summer!

Alasse, I don't wear the hair scarves when it's hot and my hair is up ... I don't sweat properly, so I loose the most heat through my head ... which means I don't want it contained in a scarf or a hat.

lari, I do have several nice summer dresses; I just need to get OVER my hesitancy about wearing them for every day!

Totally agree with everything you said! Some days I just check to make sure the parts are covered and call it done.

I think your choice of saturated jewel tones keep you from looking frumpy :)

I am like Claire, once I let my feet out, it's hard to get them back into shoes, unless the temperatures dip (like they are now).

I'm sorry, but I was ROTFL at your "GROSS, give me sandals" comment. At a certain temperature (before 90F, for sure) I make the switch to sandals and stay that way all Summer, pretty much. My feet seem to swell about a half size, so once I let them out, there's no getting them back into shoes.
You don't look frumpy at all. Your top is a gorgeously flattering color on you, and your hair looks nice in an updo. I find it hard to feel sorry for someone who has abundant, thick, healthy hair though! Even though it's a (literal) pain, it's a beautiful feature to have and I envy you that. Do you have any print dresses? They would be cool and provide a different silhouette if that's practical for your life.

I hear you, MuseumGal. Even "not as hot as usual" is too hot for comfort. And some days, forget fitted shorts - loose is all one can handle.

Now, for you, hair scarves are still okay, right? Those would add a little zing to your summer style. I know a lot of forum members like different shoe (sandal) styles to change up their outfits, too - I don't know if you have options there.

Summers are hard. I think it is often the third piece that brings everything together, and on those really hot days no-one wants to wear a third piece. I like the silk scarf idea and I think the way you have used colour is fabulous- that shade looks great on you. I don't think you look frumpy. It is a simple outfit, but the bright colour and modern sandals give it zing. Maybe some patterned tops could make things feel a little more interesting for you?

It's been a unusually cool and rainy summer around here (OK) so far, but we have had only a couple days of typical 100F/40C weather. Here's what I'd forgotten about really hot days:

In the winter I can wear pants 3-5 times and tops 2-3 times before washing them. In the summer, pants can be worn twice at most, tops only once. Bras need to be washed after every wear - in fact sometimes I change bras half way though the day (sorry if that's TMI).

Closed toes shoes without socks are only OK when temps are maybe 60/70F, over that, GROSS, give me sandals.

Necklaces: FORGET IT. Statement earrings are the way to go.

Scarves are only used as an AC coverup, I have no interest in draping them around my neck for decoration at high temps.

Hair goes UP over 80F or so, get it off my face, off my neck. But my hair is heavy and I get headaches after a few hours, so no complex styles, they must be easy to take down and then put back up. This is why I frequently wear pigtails, even though the are wildly inappropriate for a 46 year old.

It's really hard (for me) to feel stylish at high temps!

Pic: Example of a typical high summer out fit for me: linen cropped pants, tank top, sandals, silk scarf, hair up, no jewelry except big earrings. I felt wildly frumpy and boring in this, but I'm not sure how to improve, so suggestions are welcome.
