Ket, I feel guilty telling you that the bowls were $3.99 each and the plates $1.99! This shop is in a college area and for some reason they always have vintage china and kitchen stuff—just a little, but always some. So much fun to find.

The dress and skirt are both perfect for you! Such a bummer they were gone today.

PYREX! That is so expensive here, even for secondhand/thrift. I love that you got it! I also love the French dishes. (I love just about anything vintage... so...hehe!)

WELL the lovely velvet skirt and I are not meant to be. I went back and couldn’t find it OR the dress. I guess that’s the problem with having excellent taste, haha.

To console myself, I acquired two vintage Pyrex mixing bowls and these delightful French porcelain tomato plates.

The skirt seems the more unique find to my eye — I would do as Brooklyn suggests and shorten it slightly to pair with boots and pretty much anything on top for a good winter outfit…IF I wore skirts in the winter, which I rarely do.

The dress looks nice too, and I think it would be great with flats. It reminds me of something Boden would make. Is it useful for you?

The purple of that sweater is really nice — not an easy color to find these days, so I think it’s a justifiable purchase!

Gosh, there is no way I would have left that velvet skirt behind. Is it a natural
velvet (cotton or viscose/silk) or a poly version? That would influence me. Older items tend to be cotton velvet. You could shorten it slightly (maybe 2-3 inches) and wear it with ankle boots. I would wear it during the day (or at night) with a leather jacket. Why not. Velvet is The Best.

I like the sweater and the dress too.

Carla! That skirt is divine!! Can’t wait to see it on.

In my heart I know you non-enablers are QUITE right. But. Sigh.

I set out to go back to the store and got sidetracked by the OTHER thrift shop, which is at a church and only open a few hours Friday and Saturday but is excellent. And I came away with this (again badly photographed) vintage (??? But the best of my sleuthing suggests 70s or 80s) Henri Bendel Italian-made merino sweater. It does NOT have any holes, haha. I mean, it cost $4? Clearly I had to?

Will see if the others continue to prey on my mind.

Dee articulated it well. I shop from a list - even when doing ‘second hand first’. It takes discipline, but it also increases my shopping experience. I really do love looking at all the beautiful things, but recognize that they don’t need to come home with me. I want to get good wear numbers from any garment that comes into my closet - new or second hand.

I’ve added 3 thrifted items to my closet this year, and they all meet my 2025 goals.

1. Golden beige wool sweater made in the UK (a much finer replacement/upgrade of a cotton version that got 60+ wears and was wearing thin at the elbows)
2. Brooks Brothers woman’s white button down (a classic item I’ve wanted for a while, but couldn’t find the right one. This one ticks all the boxes and fits perfectly.)
3. Eggplant leather knee length pencil skirt (like-new condition). Experiments with pleather pants have been so successful, I decided to add a skirt - but go for the real (rather than faux) deal. A steal at $28CAD!

I’m with Dee. You’re the one who knows if you would get enough use out of these pieces. You already have lots of gorgeous clothes to choose from. I can’t remember which stylist it was who kept saying “Where are you going in that?”
The reason for my lack of enabling is having too much stuff myself!

Of course dress #1 will work with cute flats. Great frock :)

The skirt can work like your other shirts. Dress it down with boots and a short jacket. Super duper fit!

Dress #1 is adorable, but perhaps some of your hesitation to make these purchases is rooted in something more. Thrifting can be so enticing because of the cheaper prices and the find of one of a kind items but if you don't have an actual need for these pieces they may just end up as clutter in your closet or kitchen. I've been seduced a few times thrifting items that I ultimately didn't need or had no real plan for and then I end up donating them back. That would be my concerns based on your hesitation.

I think the dress will work with flats and is cool. The skirt should be treated/worn like any other skirt in Fall and Winter. Also fab.

But I could go back!!

1. Bravissimo dress. Tried on over tank top and thin stretchy skirt. I actually liked this a lot but felt it probably wouldn’t look good with flats, greatly limiting its usefulness.

2. World’s worst picture snapped in haste as the store was about to close, but I can’t emphasize enough how lush and soft and luxurious-feeling the velvet is. I think this is from the 80s or 90s? Label says “Bruno Duluc KUSH.” Buuuut I could not envision what I would wear it with, or when or where.

Also left behind: Small artsy clay vase, probably someone’s personal artistic effort, and small white rectangular Copco enameled cast iron baking pan, tempting but given my crowded kitchen probably not needed. I just knew it was worth more than it cost!
