Brooklyn I read a lot of scientific papers for my job so perhaps I was primed to see the echoes of your biology studies coming through!

Thanks SarahD8. That’s a very writerly analysis of my writing. I’m flattered!

It made me think about biology, which I studied at school. I don’t remember much about it but I do remember the scientific method (used for experiments):

Aim/objective
Method
Results
Conclusion

Perhaps I am applying the scientific method to fashion

Oh wow, this is fantastic Brooklyn! Per usual!

What I especially love is with your first post you have quietly, casually given us a master class in how you pull off these great style endeavors. Your post goes:
-Lifestyle brief
-Description of challenges
-Solution
-Inspiration
-How you adapted the inspiration
-Why it works for you

And bonus points for your nod to "never say never"! :-)
Anyway, I am going to try to keep this methodology in mind as I think through style challenges of my own in the future. I think it will be very useful!

Like Bijou I especially love the look with the wolf shirt, it is second only to the pic of Siena for me.

@Roberta, I’m getting into the pinks quite a bit lately. That’s new for me.

@ClaraT and @Star, sick! I hope you give it a try :)

@Ophelia, sometimes the contrast stitching looks good on a dyed item but other times it can be annoying. I try to treat each dye job as a bit of an adventure and prepare for anything. Eg Often the colour doesn’t turn out exactly how you expect. But you do end up with a unique item.

@Kellygirl, this formula is very you :)

@RobinF, thank you. I seem to have finally broken out of neutrals. It’s taken a while.

@ChristelJ, I am pleased that you see it that way. That was the big challenge for me when I started working from home back in 2019.

@April, we are expecting around 36C tomorrow, so hot weather definitely still exists.

Thanks everyone! I must say I regard any comparison with Rita Hayworth, no matter how small, as a tremendous compliment. I would love to do an “inspired by Gilda” outfit…swoon.

Siena says thank you too. It’s virtually impossible to take a selfie with her. She is a wriggler.

For anyone thinking about a coloured denim skirt and not keen on DIY, they do sometimes appear on Free People and ASOS. Usually in purple shades.

@Jaime, it was hard to find good photos of Rita in the film. It is not a great movie. But not bad either. Definitely made better by her participation. I love Gary Cooper too.

@Suz, I think you would rock a silver coated denim skirt, and I’ve seen several of those. Just saying.

@Lisa and @Dee, this was the problem I experienced. Denim is too heavy for most days in summer. I really need to think of a denim skirt as an alternative to jeans rather than an alternative to, say, shorts.

@Sal and @Bijou, I too like the wolf tee because of the similarity with dogs. I am a big fan of German shepherds and I think of them as very wolf like in their appearance.

@Firecracker and @Bonnie, you might like a long cargo skirt too. Similar vibe to a denim skirt but with a more urban edge. I am still looking for the right one.

@Slimcat, thank you for noticing the brooches. That was actually my favourite look :)

@JAileen, yes, they are olive boots! I looked for them for aaaaages. So versatile!

@Angie, you know what a big part of life the doggie walk is. I don’t want to think of it as a utilitarian exercise that doesn’t count for style purposes, IYKWIM. In many ways, it’s the best part of my day. All the more important that it feels good from a style perspective too. I know you understand.

I started reading and tried to conjure up a memory of Rita Hayworth but you thoughtfully provided the movie poster! What a splendid source of inspiration and you made it completely you with the brilliant color combinations. Your photos do complete justice to Rita and your excellent description of your thought process. Gorgeous!

This is BRILLIANT, as usual! Wow, I just love this formula for your purposes and I love your inspiration, too! It's amazing how cleverly you have adapted the inspiration fo ryour own preferences and needs. Gorgeous overdye jobs and you picked a great skirt to work with! Such pretty colours.

I love your interpretation of the original inspiration photo. A tee and denim and comfortable footwear is a staple casual outfit formula for me, it's really fun to see the tees paired with a denim skirt instead of the typical jeans.

I've had the same issue as you when I've tried denim skirts in the past. By the time I was ready to show some bare skin, the knee length denim skirts felt too heavy when it's hot outside and I want shorts in lighter weight fabrics instead.

Changing the denim skirt length to a maxi length for spring and fall days is a brilliant idea!

What ChristelJ said! Rita Hayworth has nothing on you, Brooklyn. These outfits are super fab, especially seeing how practical they are for you. I have never had good luck with denim skirts, either. They have felt bulky to me, and I can see how you found them too warm for summer. I think the longer length of yours makes them especially good, because they can really serve a similar function to cropped jeans. I'd like to have that rose print t-shirt, and the Blondie tee also!

Love all these!! Australia & NZ have all the clothes in my style. They seem to have the best-for-me & widest selection of skirts.
I had ventured into dyeing chinos until I discovered some don’t have cotton thread & result in contrast stitching, & the fabric holding the zipper doesn’t take dye…. But your post made me realize that wouldn’t matter for jeans (except the zipper fabric) because they already have contrast stitching!! Denim blue isn’t a great color on me, too cool maybe, so this has opened up all sorts of possibilities!

Love this formula, its very stylish yet a practical choice for transitional weather. You have such a wonderful collection of longer denim skirts, all beautifully styled and accessorized. Cute pic of you and your doggie too.

I also find that my knee-length denim pencil skirt isn't quite as versatile as I hoped it would be and its often too heavy for summer wear.

Your modifications to the formula are a resounding success!

And as we head into winter, I will look forward to seeing your outfits as evidence that the cold weather is impermanent.

Walking my dog is a key (twice a day) activity for me. We go for long walks, which sometimes include stops for coffee and socialising at the dog park with other dogs and their humans. It’s important to me to feel good about what I’m wearing without sacrificing comfort or practicality.

Spring is tricky. Daytime maximum temperatures can be pleasantly warm but morning and evening temperatures are still quite cool. When I leave home for my morning walk it can be anything from 13-18C. By the time I get back it can be anything from 18-26C. The reverse applies to my evening walk.

This spring I’ve been trying out a new for me formula for casual daytime wear:

Long denim skirt + tee + lightweight (cotton) jumper or jacket + flat boots + crossbody bag or backpack

I was inspired by Rita Hayworth’s look in the movie “They Came to Cordura”. In the second half of the movie she wears an a-line denim skirt (could be culottes, but it looks like a skirt), shirt and boots. She is dressed in a practical way for hiking in the desert and dragging railway carts but still manages to look fabulously feminine. (It helps to be Rita Hayworth of course.)

I modified the look for me by:
*substituting a tee or knitwear for the shirt,
*wearing coloured denim, rather than just the traditional blue,
*wearing urban (not western) style boots,
*adding some bohemian touches, like jewellery, pattern and texture.

What I like about this formula:
*At the end of winter I am longing to wear skirts more but it feels a bit early for my summer skirts, which are mostly linen, silk and lightweight cotton. Denim feels more substantial and more appropriate for spring temperatures.
*A denim skirt has the same advantages as jeans for everyday wear: casual, hard wearing, easy to wash.
*A long denim skirt offers good sun coverage.
*The a-line shape and back slit makes it easy to walk in.
*Denim looks good with boots, and I like to make the boot wearing season last as long as possible.
*Denim is easy to overdye, so I have some good colour options besides blue.

I have bought denim skirts in the past and never, ever had success with them. I actually had them on my “no buy” list. (Ha ha. That went well.) Past versions were shorter and more pencil shaped. I usually wore them with sandals in summer. The problem was that in warm (sandal) weather I often found them too heavy and hot. They work much better for me in the transitional weather of spring. They also work well for wet days.

I can start out the day wearing a denim skirt, tee and cotton jumper. Because the jumper is cotton, I can wear it directly against my skin. I can then strip down to the tee as it gets warmer. The jumper is easily popped in my bag or tied around my waist. Or, if I’m going out in the afternoon, I can head out wearing a denim skirt and tee with a cotton jumper in my bag in case I need it as it gets cooler.

The pictures show some iterations of this formula. Please keep in mind that this is a *casual* outfit formula.

It’s now getting pretty consistently warm here. I think boot season may be over. Sad But I look forward to reviving this formula in autumn.
