Well, I tried these and they are going back. The waist is high and small, the rest is sort of shapeless on me. I am going to look for a better alternative - so thanks for all the great links and suggestions! I think the belt on the Helmut Lang shorts would make me crazy but that's a shape I love!

I like them both and I like the idea of dressy shorts for work, if you can do it. (I don't think I could do it at my work--I think shorts are against the dress code--but they would look a lot dressier than many of the things that we are allowed to wear!)
Anyway, I've added some finds below, too, some of which I think might be easier to dress up because they are more toward short culottes than short pants.

Late to this - I did read yesterday but wasn't sure if I had anything worth saying.... but you know, I love those HL's (and yes, the price is , well, pricey) but those would be so cool to have. You could style those a million different ways. As classes as the Trouve's are, don't you find that that style can skew a little too classic ? They just don't strike me as you as much as the HL's do. I don't know what you do or where you work, so cannot comment at all on suitability that way...

I love this idea and prefer the HLs. Having said that, I tend to be a slow adopter so using the Trouvé pair to try it out this look might be worthwhile. If you find yourself reaching for them a lot you could then upgrade to the HLs.

I got some shorts a couple of summer ago, similar to the Trouve's. I really liked having that option... my workplace is fairly casual in the summer, but I still like to look professional.

I love the idea of wearing these shorts as a replacement for a pencil skirt. Totally cool but then I do not know how your office is. Could be so cool with a blazer and laceless oxfords.

I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. (How's that from someone who is all about dressing for image in the workplace!) But I'm with Suz that the HLs might be harder to incorporate into a professional setting at a senior level because the style, although dressy, originates from a casual utility pant.

My perspective is that most people in NA still think of shorts on women as casual attire. That association would make me feel more comfortable in shorts which used professional style bottoms, like suit trousers or skirts, as an inspiration. I think it would also make the connection between the shorts and the rest of your outfit more seamless.

I think this would be good to get off the plane with, with a blazer and sensible shoes and then just change to a skirt or slacks later?
Not sure what your job entails, other than bush travel.
If it is casual attire, I would do these in a heartbeat.
Love the Helmut Land shorts also, sort of dressy utilitarian...pockets! Belts!

I think it depends on your workplace. I like them both. The Helmuts are more unique and fashion-forward but possibly more difficult to work into a dressier work related outfit.

Hmm, I like both, but the Helmut Lang are more interesting, in a good way. I typically don't wear shorts to work, so I'm not a good judge about their appropriateness. It's funny, my casualness at work includes jeans, tees, and sneakers but not shorts.

I've been considering a pair of long dress shorts for work instead of skirts. What do you think of these? I think with a blazer and the right shoes they would be dressy enough. Or have you seen something better? I love the Helmut Lang shorts, but of course not the price.
