Suz and Lisa, you're Canadian. It makes sense. Feel free to laugh at me. I can take it! When I'm in Hong Kong and my friends bundle up when it's 7C and say it's absolutely freezing - I GET IT. My type of cold people! (My client in Mexico City says it's freezing at 15C).

Suz, we have had THREE amazingly warm Springs and hot Summers in a row. Hopefully this is our new climate.

JAileen, high five. It's very damp in Seattle.

Why didn't I acclimatize? I'm wearing thermals now (inside), and it's 0C outside. Bring on the hot flashes.

We have a friend from North Dakota who doesn't wear a coat until it's below 20F (-7C) because, according to him, it isn't cold. I've actually seen this. I think he's crazy.

On the other hand, when we go to San Francisco it can feel very cold at 50F (10C) because of the dampness.

I have to admit I'm laughing a bit at the image of Angie all bundled up in what I only wear when it gets to -20 or so. When it's just at OC /32 F, I've been known to go out without a coat if I'm just in the car I know, I know, we've had this conversation a million times before ....but it never gets old -- lol.

Angie, you're so right. But you know, people do become acclimatized to the place they are. A friend of mine who is originally from Montreal now lives in Victoria. She has only been living there about 6 years, so she still gets quite a chuckle from fellow - Victorians who complain wildly about the "horrible cold" in temperatures in the 6 C range. But at the same time, she admits that she has begun to find 0 C rather unpleasant! So, yes, it is all relative.

I never used to have much ability to handle heat but for some reason as I have become older I seem to tolerate heat much better. That goes against what many other women say, so who knows how it all works? It's a mystery.

Still, all in all, even with the damp, the Pacific NW weather will seem mild to me, for sure, and the only time I'll regret that is when summer doesn't feel hot enough. :)

Well, Suz and JAileen. That's why we can't live in Boston! (TRUTH, btw). I have ZERO resistance to the cold. I could happily never see snow and ice again. (Remember that I grew in humid and hot Asia and Africa - I have excellent resistance to the heat).

Suz, I go on about how I live in a cold place. But when you come to this side, you'll say you live in a mild place! HILARIOUS. It's all relative isn't it. And it makes complete sense to both of us.

Thank you, Summer! Highly recommended! And high five, Staysfit!! We are coat twins. Like you, I find it perfect for our current temperatures (which are much the same.) High five JAileen and Una, too!

Angie, I am chuckling at the thought of you so bundled for a walk in the same temps -- I'd be miserably hot dressed as you were, unless of course the dampness and wind were playing a role. I guess I'm more like Una -- I can easily see wearing this coat in the teens (F).

I do think it can be awfully difficult to compare temperatures between regions. Quite often our thermometer temperature in the summer sounds quite pleasant, for example, but the humidity makes it feel so much hotter! And cold can be similar. Maybe the thermometer reads 35F but that 35 will feel much different in one region than another.

Mine has been perfect for our current weather, which has been hovering just at freezing temperature or above, 32 F - 40 F. I sized up to a medium and am glad because a heavy knit sweater fits underneath, and with that, I think the coat will be good for slightly colder temps if I am active. It will not be warm enough if I am not. I love the length. I also exchanged mine for the pretty coral pink color that Suz showed, and it gets lots of complements.

Angie, you'd love it here (in summer!). I wore my thermoball this morning for dog walking. It was 31F, cloudy and windy. I had a fleece top, jeans, fleece hat and gloves. It was fine. I really like the length.

Well, ladies. I'm a nambi pambi in cold weather (you knew that). I just took Sam on a frozen walk (about 0 Celsius), and hauled out my arctic Canadian puffer and wore thermal undies too. There is NO WAY I could have worn my tomato thermoball and felt warm enough. I need to retire in LA.....

Nice to see you, Lisa, and yes -- you are the NF expert! I had no idea that they had a special wash product. That's amazing. I love the sounds of your new stretch matte coat in ivory. It sounds elegant (for a gear coat). I'd like a white puffer too, eventually.

CJ, I read that this coat fits a bit on the small side. I bought a S when I usually take XS.

As the happy owner of 3 Thermoballs (yes, crazy, I know, but DD gets a very wonderful discount from TNF so - we take great advantage). one long and two short, I can say that they are OK in cold weather - to a point, but the best jackets ever for this mid-temperature time.....as Suz notes. Elizabeth P - I too thought my long one wouldn't get wear in the dead cold of February Manitoba winters, but I wear mine all the time as car coat - usually for going to the gym or the grocery store, and it is comfortable and just fine. According to DD, they aren't 'intended to be a -30 with windchill type of coat. But aren't they terrific? And, something interesting : the weatherproofing properties only get better with washing. TNF sells laundering kits (a wash and conditioning rinse) that you can use right in your washing machine. All very technically researched and real. My newest one is a stretch matte ivory - and I love it! Glad you got one too Suz - wish the store here had had the orange colour this fall or I would have bought it too.

Thanks for the review, Suz. Having a mid-weight winter coat is so important for a number of us. You and Elizabeth P are so right -- this one will make a fabulous "car coat"... not too bulky/heavy or overly warm. It will also be perfect for active days when your outdoor activities include a lot of walking and moving around.

Suz, I can see that it'll be a great car coat. Or a "drive your kid an hour to a curling bonspiel" coat (already done that a few times last weekend ). Our climate often hovers in the 0 to -5 range, so I'm happy to hear others are finding it fine at a bit colder than we've experienced so far this year. I also have a heavy duty coat for when it really gets cold.

And I'd forgotten (or not registered) about the waterproof(ish) part, so that's good to know! Esp here....

I bought this coat--love the hoodie for rain and wind conditions, particularly. I wear a warm scarf on frigid days as winter has now set in. I wish I were braver in choosing color for coats (opting for a happy color) but I usually opt for neutral colors that I can easily jazz up with scarves and that will make me happy for several years. I bought the urban navy. I've a redhead so navy is a go-to neutral for me.

At first, the bit of shine to the fabric bothered me but I'm now used to it.

I tried on both the medium and large. Neither was the "perfect" fit. The large I swam in (for the body) but it fit better across the chest. The medium is a bit snug across the chest but fits well in the body. So I opted for the Medium. I'm not sure if North Face jackets tend to run small or not. It is supposed to be a fitted jacket. I like the fact that it shows a bit of curve and I don't feel like I'm a marshmellow.

Elizabeth, I am pretty sure it won't work for -20C temps -- but I was really looking for something for the between-range and for high activity. I am sure it will work for me when I go skating, for example -- with my polartec fleece and a cashmere sweater as layers. I can also see it as a kind of "car coat" puffer to throw on when I need to go pick up my daughter from some activity...

Since I'm planning to move to a more temperate climate in the next year or so, I know it will be a good buy for the long term.

My grey Lole puffer is great for super cold sunny weather but far too hot and heavy for medium temps.

I knew you'd approve, Angie! I can really see this working well in Victoria.

Interesting... as I've been a bit disappointed with mine. Or rather, I am anticipating being a bit disappointed. It seems great around the zero mark, and I've worn it quite a bit in the last couple of weeks, but
I suspect it's NOT going to be warm enough when the winter sets in.

I was thinking yesterday that it might actually get put away for the winter!

I sure hope you're right and I'm wrong! Cuz I love the fit and colour of mine (the orangey red)

It's a real winner for varied climates, it seems! It will pack easily, too. I'm really pleased it's working for you as well.

Ditto from me - I purchased the light blue one at NAS. It is 12 degrees Fahrenheit today and I am happy as can be!

I bought one in NAS and love its lightweight throw on and go quality. It's good to know it's good for light precipitation, too, not that we get much, here in the desert.

I'm afraid I don't have a photo of myself in it yet, but like LaPedestrienne, I availed myself of the Black Friday sales and picked up a Thermoball Parka (like Angie, Una, Staysfit, and numerous others here.) I've taken it out in various conditions in the past week and it's a complete winner for my casual needs!

Incredibly lightweight, surprisingly warm and insulating for that weight, reasonably good in wind (though some reviews faulted it for that, I haven't found it a problem) and a real winner in misty rain, keeping me completely dry. It is probably best for temperate climates -- I haven't tried it in anything below about 0 C -- (or low 30s F) -- but if you're in motion and wearing insulating under-layers I suspect it would work for colder temps also.

For reference, I don't run super cold except for my hands -- Reynauds, argh! -- but nor do I run warm. In other words, I consider myself average in my temperature tolerence. But my outdoor wear is for activity as a rule, not for waiting at bus stops and the like -- where I think warmer coats are more important.

I need a coat to throw on for my daily long walks in changeable weather, something for going to the gym, etc. and I was really looking for one in a bright happy colour. This definitely fits the bill. Thanks, Angie for the recommendation!
