A big welcome to the forum from me as well, Grace! I’m all for keeping warm and cosy when it’s cold, so your beautiful black dress gets my vote as well (I’m a big fan of that sleeve length too). I like both the tall boots, and the burgundy booties with the dress. The burgundy would add a bit of fun colour and festive sheen to the look. And complement the red in your fabulous scarf. Other accessories are gorgeous too.
Your plans/ideas for the red dress sound great too.

Have an amazing night out.

It’s great that you have reason to celebrate.l think the warm dress is a good idea along with everyone else and you could wear either boot with it.The long boot will be warmer and more dressy and the patent boot more street style and trendy. Can I suggest trying them both on with the dress and seeing which vibe you like best.l hope that you have a great evening.

All, thank you so much for confirming that the warm dress is the way to go and for your thoughts about the footwear--I was thinking I'd wear black opaque tights.

Runcarla's comment about outerwear reminds me that this could affect which boot to go with. I'll wear either a dressier wool knee length black coat that I bought a while back, or a new maxi-length Eddie Bauer black puffer w/faux fur trimmed hood. It's too cold where I live to not have a long puffer in my closet. I will try on both coats with the boots and see how it turns out.

Eddie Bauer makes great puffers for petites. I have a stadium-length one from four years ago that is still going strong.

The Kate Spade purse has a surprising amount of shimmer to it that doesn't really show in the photo.

Thank you for welcoming me so graciously to this community!

For city walking, I would always choose a flat heel but you know your own comfort zone.

And yes, be warm at all costs.

I would need to be warm!
So your outerwear will be key to the walking around part.
Are you able to try some things together before final decision? The red boots are fab but the black boots and dress may have better proportions, and for indoors you could use jewelry and clutch, shawl to add color and sparkle. I find u can’t always tell until I try things on together, so have to be prepared for some returns. If you’re wearing a good warm coat and really love the red dress it could be warm indoors with tall boots.

Vote for the warm black dress with shiny boots ( or black if it's more comfortable ). Scarf is very pretty. You can add a chain or pendant in gold or just go with brighter color of a lipstick . It's all good as long as you love it on you - enjoy your special evening!

Another vote for the warm black dress and the burgundy boots with tights. I love Munro American footwear because it's so comfortable and stylish. Have a wonderful date night and welcome to the forum!

I love both dresses and agree with Carla that the black dress with the burgundy boots and accessories is very fab! I love the red lace dress too and with tights, knee high boots, and warm outer wear might be equally as warm. Have a wonderful time.

As someone who runs cold I will say absolutely wear the warm dress. The shawl is beautiful.
I’d personally prefer the tall black boots because they would be warmer and to my eye they are more in line with the aesthetic of the black dress, but the red ones are lovely too.
What a great problem to have :-)
I hope you enjoy the show and have a great time.

Another vote for the warm dress! I think the blingy jewellery will festive it up (the red is beautiful though). I'm torn on the shoes - my conservative side says the tall boot, but as Rachy says, the shiny boots are festive and fun. So maybe they are the way to go.

Enjoy your celebration!

The warm (black) dress with the patent burgundy boots. Tights to keep your legs warm (black or burgundy). Your scarf/shawl choice picks up the burgundy in the boots. What about your outerwear? 25F is too cold to go without a coat and gloves. Accessories are spot on, though an evening bag to match the booties would be a little more dressy.

Welcome to the forum, Grace!

Hello,

I'm putting together an outfit for a special "date night" out at the theater in our nearest major city with my spouse to celebrate finishing a round of treatment for a serious illness. While first drawn to traditional party dresses, I knew that I wanted to avoid unused party wear sitting in my closet (I wear business clothes during the week and jeans/sweats on weekends/evenings in my very casual community, and we have no formal party occasions to go to). So, I looked for things I could wear again or that were already in my wardrobe. Also, we like to walk around and check out holiday decorations, and I don't want to be cold or have sore feet on our special night--temps will likely be around 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

So, below is a collection of what I'm thinking about wearing. There are two shoes posted: I realize these are not fancy shoe choices but I could not find festive, warm, comfortable shoes, and I hoped to find footwear I could wear again. Thoughts about either footwear choice?

I did find a dress alternative (red lace shift) that I'm also posting for your feedback in case the black dress does not seem dressy enough. It's nowhere near as warm as the black wool dress and I've struggled to find comfortable, low-heel winter shoes that would work with it, but I'm thinking about keeping it for warmer weather and dressing it down with a denim jacket in spring and fall for less formal dining out. I have virtually no dresses and have a hard time finding dresses that don't feel constricting around the waist...and I love red and lace! As you can probably tell, I'm a big fan of 3/4 sleeves since they don't require alteration on my short arms. I'm 5'3", so the red dress hits me at the top of the knee (longer than the model).

This is my first YLF post and I greatly appreciate your feedback!
