Ryce, I'm glad you ended up having a good experience. I would have been on pins and needles over the clouds!

My husband is a Texan and we go down a couple times a year to see his mother. In 2024 she'll be 99, so I don't know if she'll be around to see it, but my husband is definitely planning a trip for that one *no matter what*!!!

Glad you had such a great experience, Janet! What luck to see be near someone who let you view through his telescope!

We went to St. Joseph, MO, nine hours away, which was the shortest drive to totality for us. Spent the night before in Overland Park KS. We pre-arranged parking at the airport which sold tickets for 5,000 cars. Our porta-potty situation was much better than Emily K decribes - thank goodness! Astronomers from Astronomy Magazine were there to provide play-by-play via live-tweet.

Unfortunately we had lots of clouds and some rain. We got maybe a 3-second clear view of totality, when the clouds parted a bit. It was rather amazing to hear the collective gasps and then whoops from I guess about 15,000 people in that moment. The clouds cleared about 20 minutes after totality so we got excellent views of the moon revealing the sun again. The clouds did not impede our experience of sudden darkness or the sunset effect. It was pretty amazing!

I saw the 1970 eclipse under similar conditions. Cloudy skies, but still decent opportunities to see the show.

Traffic coming home was dreadful. At one point Monday night we only travelled 25 miles in 2 hours on I-35. I'm so glad we found someone to keep our dog. That traffic jam would have been a nightmare for her.

Who knows if we will still be living here when we're in the zone of totality for 2024, but we'll definitely try to see that one as well. I would love to see a full eclipse from beginning to end in this lifetime.

The one on Monday went through a lot of open space in the West. So the little towns that were in the zone were bombarded with people. In 2024, though, the zone goes through all of the major cities in Texas, except Houston. Weather in April in Texas can be crap shoot, too. We have family in Texas, but even if you don't, the state has so many interesting things to see, that I think it's a worthwhile visit.

We will! I've already talked to my hubs about it. It's not that far in the future. It's going through or near Montreal and I have family there, so it'd be perfect -- except in April, there's a good chance it might not be clear skies. It might be better to head to the states, but I think it's going across a band of America that I hadn't planned on visiting. Will have to work that out closer to the time.

Karen, that's a gorgeous picture. Wow! Of course I'd love to be one of those crazy people that go all over the world to view eclipses, but that's probably not going to happen. :(

Aziraphale, thank you! It was such an amazing experience, in the true sense of the word, that I would encourage you to plan on going to the one in April 2024. Seriously. Make a vacation out of it. Go.

Karen, my husband mentioned South America!! My mother in Marin said it was foggy. She said she experienced the total exclipse in 1930 that went through N California. The zone of totality was less than a half mile wide and lasted only a couple of seconds.

So jealous, Janet!!! Rachylou - you did the right thing driving to the East Bay. I was in overcast San Francisco and while I had eclipse glasses and it was interesting, it was nothing like what my DH saw in Rexburg ID. He was in Yellowstone for geyser gazing trip and drove what should have been 2 hours to get to totality. His drive back to Yellowstone took six hours.

He owes me big for staying home to keep everything on track. He says Buenos Aires Dec 14, 2020 is next.

That sounds so cool that I'm tempted to travel to see the totality next time. We had 74% here but it was cloudy most of the day. It did clear a little so we were able to see the sun during the height of the eclipse. I couldn't tell if it was dim because of the eclipse or the clouds.

During the eclipse, it cooled down a lot, which felt good because it was hot by then. The light seemed like winter sunlight, except that the sun was high in the sky. The shadows were different, too.

We were parked next to a couple from Huntsville, Alabama. If you remember, Huntsville is famous for rockets. Well, the man used to work there. Anyway, he brought a solar telescope. It had a hydrogen alpha filter. What this means is we could see the "prominences", or features coming out from the sun into the corona. We were very lucky to see this.

Firecracker, Diana, Barbara, KKards, it was such a wonderful experience that I encourage you try for the zone of totality for the next one, in seven years.

Staysfit, I'm so sorry! Several years ago we had an annular eclipse that "theoretically" could be seen from our deck, except for the one tiny cloud in the sky. :(

Suz, yes, the light was turned down.

That sounds like a great experience! Fun to around all the science stuff going on. We opted for the campy tourist route, and for a field away from other people. During totality, it was dark enough for street lights to come on, but not pitch black. There was a bit of a breeze before it, and we heard a few crickets, but I wish we'd found a spot near more animals. Still, the difference between totality and a few minutes before/after, the "light switch" effect was impressive, and we are glad we went.

We stopped at a rest stop just inside the zone of totality, but didn't have glasses, so moved on to a big event where we could get some. I really liked the social aspect of the day.

Rachylou, that must be who traffic planners in Atlanta were thinking of!

Amazing! Those are really cool photos. So glad you had that opportunity.

Our eclipse was similar to Staysfit's with the fortunate exception that there were no clouds in the sky and at the moment of highest coverage I was at a periodontist's appointment for my daughter. In the waiting room another patient had a pair of the glasses that she loaned around to all of us, so I got to look directly at the sun and it was really amazing! I hadn't expected it to feel so different from looking at a photo of the event.

As for the sky, I felt like I was looking at a computer screen and the brightness had been turned down.

It sounds like you had a great experience! We had 17% totality here. My colleagues and I went outside to see what we could using the cell phone selfie method. The sky looked like it often does ----- as if we are about to have a rainstorm, so 17% was enough to dim the light but not by much. In fact, it was a sunny nice day. There were very few clouds. However, right at the moment of totality, an annoying cloud was blocking the view!!! It figures, I think 80% of our days are overcast so it was optimistic thinking we could see anything right! My pics took a lot of effort. (Not a photographer or NASA scientist among us) We were debating whether we we were going to have retinal damage from all the glare off our phones! :-)

I'm including my pics so you can see how annoying this was. Not a cloud in the sky except the one blocking our view!

Cool! We only had 63% totality here, but it was still v cool. we just went out to the quad at work for a few minutes but since we work at a medical/science campus there were loads of people geeking out and the atmosphere was very fun and congenial. A couple of people let us borrow their eclipse glasses to take a look. I saw a couple of telescopes, a drone, and a bunch of homemade viewing devices. I imagine the atmosphere where you were was like that x 100!

Wow, that is so cool. It was very interesting here, but nothing like what you experienced. Unlike Angie, I did feel a chill when I went outside during our 92% eclipse. But it was still quite bright outside. The light was just kind of odd. It wasn't like an identifiable time of day. My DH made a pinhole camera for us to view the eclipse in. It was fun.

My husband described the eclipse as someone dimming the light, and then at 100 percent, flipping the switch off. It was that sudden, and everyone gasped.

Sal, definitely worthwhile. I'd do it again. We're already planning on the one in seven years. We have family living in the zone of totality.

Rachy, I'm glad you got to see it. Maybe the others were expecting the clouds to burn off. I had a Basque chorizo sandwich and it dripped on my shirt.

Meredith, Paula, it's interesting how your experiences varied. We were at 2100 feet today, and live at 4700 feet. Normally, even with my massive amounts of sunscreen, I can get pink at home if I'm outside for a couple hours. Today I was outside for nine hours and didn't get the least big sunburned. Of course the sun was eclipsed for several hours!

Angie, thanks! At home we would have been at 84 percent. There's another total eclipse in North America in seven years, stretching from Mexico to Canada:

Emily, I believe that's what happened. I talked to a woman from Boise who told me what they said on tv. Luckily, we didn't know!

Jenn, your experience sounds really good, and also...efficient! I have to say that I enjoyed supporting the Science Club. I love encouraging kids in things like this. There was also a pancake breakfast put on by the Future Farmers of America.

What a great idea for a high school fundraiser. We would absolutely have done something like that.

There were lots of warnings about traffic here, too, but we left home around 7 this morning for the normally 2.5-hour drive to the path of totality (which was at 11:47). We hit the zone around 10 and then drove until we found a rest area with about 2 minutes of totality. Along with a hundred or so other people, we pulled over on the road leading out of the rest stop, eclipse-watched until just after totality, and then pulled right onto the highway towards home. We stopped for lunch and were at home taking a nap by 3:00.

I was impressed by the preparedness of authorities in both Wyoming and Colorado. Every rest stop was stocked with TP and extra portapotties, and every emergency turnaround on the high had a police officer, tow truck, or ambulance standing by.

The whole trip was incredibly smooth, and we were barely on the road longer than we would have been driving to the same location on any normal day.

WOW. Brilliant. You are adorable, Janet.

We had 92% Totality in Seattle. It was subtle. It looked like sunset at 10.30am. NOT dark or cold. Still sunny and shadows everywhere.
