Ok, so Sephora and Makeupalley are going on the list. Does anyone have any other youtube channels they recommend?

kkards, glad someone else can get something out of this as well. I'm not totally clueless. I do wear makeup every day, but I'm not that good at it. I want to improve my technique and master an every day look.

ClaraT and Greyscale, I do have a Sephora near me, but I've never ventured in. I've always used drugstore makeup and just recently discovered some premium brands at Ulta.

Sephora helped me go from makeup-phobic to totally competent at my minimal makeup look. First, you can go and try things on your own without pressure. Second, the sales people are always willing to help. They do offer full makeovers with $50 purchases, but instead of doing that, I'd concentrate on one area and ask for help with foundation, or with a daytime eye look, etc.

I have all sorts of chemical sensitivities, so I always put on samples in the store then see how I feel later in the day. I often take home a sample to try for a few days, too. Because of the sensitivities, I usually stick to Clinique for makeup, but I've found that the Clinique makeup counters in department stores are aimed at a different look or demographic than me. So I go to Sephora for advice, or sometimes go to other counters then try to match the colors with Clinique products. I so wish I could wear MAC makeup, but I can't. Alas.

@Lara, perhaps I'm paying the 'California premium'. You know how women's white tees are always more expensive than men's white tees? In the same way, I feel like everything (except sunshine!) is just a little pricier in California, from movies to gas to, apparently, makeup help! Or maybe my MAC store (in SF) is just like that, cause they can be

But that is good news for Liz!

@ClaraT, I never had to make a purchase for a full makeover at Sephora or at the MAC counter. Maybe it depends on where you go. Though my Sephora is really generous with makeup samples to take home and try.

Makeupalley is amazing once you figure out how to search for reviews by people in your age range with your skin type and/or coloring. I agree wit Laura that the forums aren't that helpful...

Sephora will also do a full make-up job with $50 (I think) purchase, and MAC has a similar deal. Throw yourself at the assistant's mercy (make an appointment). If you like the way an assistant looks, address her directly. Make sure you get someone experienced (insist, really) and let them know what you like and what you hate (on yourself and others). For example, you might love the pin-up girl look, but if you hate yourself in red or dark lipstick, that's not a look for you! If you can bring in some photos of looks you like, even better.

I had a great experience at a MAC store in California. They don't just do rock 'n' roll makeup--they have lots of 'my face but better' makeup. Ask for samples, especially of foundation, before you plunk down serious cash for something that only looks good in a certain light or turns out to be too moisturizing.

It can be overwhelming, so you might just start with one thing, like getting a good everyday eyeliner/eye shadow combo that works for you.

Thanks so much for the input.

Pastrygirl, I checked out Lisa Eldridge, and she has some fab videos.

mrseccentric, I've seen some Makeup Geek videos on youtube. I'm really looking for an active forum, so I will be checking it out :)

Lara, I've watched some of Wayne Goss' videos as well. It really helps to know which channels are recommended, because there are just so many!

Another vote for Lisa Elridge and you can add Wayne Goss and Pixiwoo.

Once you've watched some of their videos and read the blogs, go visit the makeup counters at department stores or Sephora for free makeovers. (I recommend Sephora personally). After your makeover do not buy anything. Ask for samples so you can try it at home by yourself to see how it wears.

Liz, I recently went to a spa where you could get a one-hour makeup lesson for free if you bought $75 worth of products (which isn't that much in makeup, when you consider how much it costs—especially if you're like me and don't have much makeup anyway!). I found the lesson extremely helpful. No one had ever taught me how to put on makeup before. I also found that when I went back to the spa to buy additional products, the gals who worked in the store would offer me advice about how to apply things if I was having a problem.

I am also going to check out some books from the library on makeup techniques. I checked out some books on manicures, which were extremely helpful, so I assume the makeup books will be great too.

I also *love* the Lisa Eldridge site.

I started here, I think: http://www.lisaeldridge.com

I also read this blog regularly to learn about new products: Musings of a Muse | Makeup Reviews and Beauty Blog

I watched A LOT of youtube videos! I also went to the Nordstrom makeup counter and was directed to Armani makeup. I ended up only buying lipstick, but the color was WAY out of my comfort zone so it was a big step. I LOVED that lipstick, and my passion for makeup ignited right then and there. I tried Sephora and Ulta for makeovers but was never really handed a magic combo. I use a hodgepodge of products and only have eye makeup nailed down. I'm always on the lookout for new foundation, blush, and lip color.
