I was thinking about various celebs who I'd heard had their lowest rib removed, but Snopes says, actually, they didn't: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/vanities/ribs.asp

I agree with Echo that any surgery carries risks. I think about the body-mod artists who have done very extreme things with their faces to make themselves look less human. Then I think about surgeries such as sex reassignment surgery and how one persons 'necessary and lifesaving' is maybe not to all of the peanut gallery, but I would never question the individual's right to chose and control their bodily autonomy in that situation myself. So who chooses what is an 'illness' and what is an individual's self-actualization?

Of course I would try to talk anyone I knew or loved out of doing something like this. As I said, I don't agree with having it done, nor do I think if I were a surgeon that I could perform the procedure in good conscience. However, me disagreeing with something does not make it "wrong". I cannot make that choice for another person, and as I said, it doesn't necessarily make someone mentally unstable if they want such a procedure (it doesn't automatically grant that they are NOT unstable, either - I am just saying that I am not in a position to tell others which procedures they may and may not have).

Plenty of people have died from less invasive and more "routine" plastic surgeries. ANY procedure that puts you under general anesthesia is a risk, but it seems hypocritical to say one elective procedure is allowed while another is not. There are all sorts of unusual surgeries being performed all over, from removing muscle to make legs less "bulky" to shaving down bone to make a face look "finer". There are even procedures to attempt to lengthen long bones to make legs longer. I would not want to have or want anyone I loved to have ANY of these procedures. But I am not sure I trust you, me or anyone else to have the final say about which procedures are okay and which are not.

As for the 76 year old mother of a young child, let me just say that I'm glad it isn't me! But men get to make the decision to be an older or even a "too old" parent all the time. Again, just because it is possible doesn't mean it is a great thing to do. I guess a person would have to ask the child whether he was happier to have been born at all or not, but unfortunately children have no say in the circumstances of their birth.

Thank you for all of your replies.
I'm afraid I have to respectfully state that I really don't think rib reduction surgery should be done unless for medical reasons. I don't really put it in the same category as other body modification surgeries due to its extreme nature. And just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. But hey - that's just my opinion.

bj1111 is right. While I find is unsettling that someone would want this, and it would never be something I would seek for myself, I don't see how this is significantly different from many other body modifications (most of which would be considered a "mutilation" by someone). Just because I disagree with a procedure doesn't make the seeker incapable of consent (unstable or any other variety of mental instability) or the doctor unethical.

let's take down the doctor hate a notch. there are many services that some of us think are immoral but should remain available.

rib reduction surgery is a service just like any other service. if it is safe, the patient is competent to consent and the surgery harms no one, then the surgeon is legally and morally free to perform the surgery. we are also legally and morally free to avoid the procedure.

I'm neither pro nor con when it comes to plastic surgery. This is a completely personal choice. But when I saw this video (posted on CNN today) I was positively horrified.

First of all, medical reasons - the rib cage of the human body is essential for protection of our internal organs. It's basically our human shield.

Secondly - does anyone in the world find this kind of look attractive?

Thirdly - I find is really disturbing, especially since I work in the healthcare field, that a physician would even undertake this kind of procedure. Severe lack of ethics IMHO.

Video is a wee bit graphic so be aware.
