Sorry to hear you're over a silhouette that is so flattering on you. Perhaps it's the midwinter doldrums though since you've been wearing them a lot and perhaps also a bit of a style thing as you're going through a change in that.

Needless to say whatever you bring you will certainly be one of the most stylish ladies on the street.

Good luck in finding your answer to this.

Gaylene, your ideas resonate with me, too. It's so true that even classics don't always last too long--sometimes we buy right before a fashion wave we don't see coming. I'm someone who's always been able to get through fall/winter with two pairs of dress pants--one pair black, and the other either navy, gray, or brown depending on what I like that year. Plus my weight changes so much that I've often been forced into small capsules! I really like the idea of a careful evaluation before each season and having a little capsule that really works. Hm, maybe I'll look again at my spring clothes!

Yes, 4 darn pounds! It is so depressing...:-(

Amazing, Sveta....great minds think alike!! (I am even bringing a polka dot scarf, despite what I said about scarves...)

It might have something to do with the comfort of the slouchy fit trousers. 4 pounds, pfffff!!!

Sarah, I will show you mine if you show me yours!!

I do hope to do a travel outfit post similar to Sveta's this weekend.

Suz, I gasped aloud when I read it: this is exactly what I was debating with myself - do I really want to bring skinnies on my trip. It is uncanny, don't you think?
On the other hand I think I gained about 4 pounds for the last year. That may explain my current put off the skinnies... :-(
However I am bringing scarves - polka dot, striped and cobalt / black checks!

I think this can be filed under 'familiarity breeds contempt' lol. I don't wear skinnies much, but rather my bootcuts at least 2 or 3 times a week as my uniform. Conversely, skinnies happen maybe once a week. Therefore, I am nowhere near tired of skinnies!

Interesting thread....I too am moving away from skinnies, and probably because I have also been wearing them all the time, tucked into boots for the winter. In fact, I tried on two pairs of jeans today - skinnies and regular - and I only bought the regular jeans. On my upcoming vacation, I'm not even bringing one pair of skinnies!
One thing I have noticed about skinnies is that they are slightly shorter than regular jeans. For a tall gal like me, that can be a deal breaker!

Another very thought provoking thread! I have been thinking about jeans lately also. I still wear my skinnies, but also frequently wear bf's and have dug out some older slightly bigger sizes and put them back in rotation. Similarly I have been thinking about boots - after two years of not wearing tall boots much I have worn them much more this season. Am I reflecting fashion or am I being moved by the same forces that tells "fashion" it is time to move on (or, more cynically, there is an opportunity to sell me new stuff)?

I am also intrigued by Gaylene's mini-capsule idea, because I do tend to wear the same few outfits over and over for a certain period and then move on. Another great thread Suz!

I hear what you mean about wearing them all the time. Until I got my booties last week, I was always wearing skinnies out too because I only had tall boots. Now that I have the booties I'm able to wear my slim trousers and slouchy jeans with them on days where it's not so slushy. I'm so happy! I didn't realize how bad I needed them, but I wanted to wear my other pants too. Sorry, that doesn't really help you....

Ooh, Runcaria - can't wait to see your photos! And that is a good thought about a pashmina. I don't really own a dressy one like that at the moment. But even though I just claimed to be moving away from scarves, I do intend to bring at least three on the trip, for warmth if nothing else.

Caro, Una, Rae, Unfrumped, Texstyle, Ingunn, Raisin - I think my revolt against skinnies may simply be a reflection of the fact that (due to weather) I have been wearing them All. The. Time. Tucked into boots, mostly, for those slushy awful days.

Oh, and Angie's cool BF outfit this morning may have influenced me a little!

Shannon, I think you are exactly right - at some point we'll turn around and want skinnies if we are into baggy now. That is how fashion works, I guess. And what makes it an endless evolution.

Angie, whatever I do, I will make sure I have booties! And an umbrella. And my trench. Do you think I should bring my tall boots as well? I have been debating that -- mid-March, the temps could be anywhere. My boots are on the warm side. But I have my older stretch Franco Sartos that are not leather (so rain friendly). And I could bring those.

Gaylene, your ideas resonate so strongly for me. In fact, I have pretty much come to this conclusion for myself as well. My thought was that I would break our year into 6 seasons, as Manidipam proposed, and rotate my closet accordingly. I already rotate spring-summer and fall-winter, but I think it would make even more sense to create small capsules for each six week period (more or less). There would definitely be some overlap of items. Some would cross over into five seasonal capsules. (I don't have very many items that work in all six, due the extremes in our weather).

Here is where the 12 for 12 schemes start to make sense to me. I wouldn't conceptualize it quite that way; I would look on it more as a proportional thing. What proportion of my wardrobe would I think it reasonable/ ethical/ practical to recycle every year? That would include items replaced due to wear and tear, and items replaced due to a need for change and "style refreshing."

I don't have an answer for that (and I think everyone's answer will differ). I am really still working on getting to a decent core wardrobe still. But I have got to the point where I look on very few of my post-YLF purchases as "mistakes" -- even if I only got a few wears from them. There aren't many items in that category after all. Some of those were thrifted in the first place. And I've learned from each one.

Suz, I'm heading to the UK for 4 weeks in September. Already took a picture of my travel wardrobe for reference when it comes time to pack. Everything fits in a carry on! (Will post pics when I get that privilege...5 more days.)

Bring one pashmina type scarf that can work as a shawl for restaurants and theatre going. In an elegant paisley or shot with a metallic, it is more stylish than a cardi, but just as cosy.

Suz, you've expressed exactly how I felt when I posted about being drawn to a looser fitting silhouette a few weeks ago. My favorite skinny, go-to jeans just seemed--I don't know--not as appealing as they were a year ago? I'm not ready to embrace baggy by any means, but a slightly looser fit just seemed more interesting. Fortunately those skinnies really don't owe me anything because I wore them to death last year.

My reaction has really made me start to wrestle with the whole notion of trying to create the "perfect" wardrobe of well-edited, well-constructed garments that could be carried through for several seasons and would fit my lifestyle and my style goals. I'm starting to think my wardrobe path might be better served by creating a small, tightly edited capsule at the beginning of each season (spring/summer and fall/winter), consisting of 8-10 items that I can mix and match for that specific season. I'm totally fine wearing the same outfits over and over again as long as my happiness factor is high with every outfit. I can see some items (like a jacket) might make it to a second, or even third, seasonal capsule as long as the happiness quotient was still there, while other items (tops?) might be finished after a single season--hopefully because they are in tatters after the six months. I think I'd also be quite happy with less variety and a very small closet. If I added a small, dressy, trans-seasonal capsule to the seasonal capsule, I'm thinking this tiny closet idea might be right for me.

Suz, whichever way you do it - you MUST stay dry. London is like Seattle - often wet. And that city is all about commuting on foot. Whether you wear boots over BF jeans, skinnies, slouchy skinnies or wear skirts and dresses - your feet need to be protected from the potential damp.

I feel sort of the same as Una - my BFs and bootlegs are for warmer weather, since they fall away from the leg at points and let in way more airflow. Skinnies keep me warm! But I hear you loud and clear about the skinny cut not being a "thrill" anymore. They feel totally classic now.

Will you feel you need to make a change before the trip, or keep to the tried and true for the trip and then have a more relaxed approach to changing style direction? Sort of like your LBD question. You might find just the change of scenery and fashion zone will help clarify some of your goals. And you might find some fabulous trousers in London!

I still love my scarves, but I find that I only wear a select few these days, and often none at all. This is interesting. You have been on a road to more modern, urban and refined the last months, so I find omitting the scarf is only logical for you. Why do you find the thrill gone when donning skinnies, do you think? I struggle with fit when wearing skinnies, either they slide off, or I get that muffin top no matter what. But this is not it for you, I believe.

I think some of my skinnies are still okay and I enjoy them- - the ones that don't feel particularly tight when I put them on. I even just ordered some subtle floral ones to try for spring - but I must admit I'm worried they might feel too snug and I probably should have ordered two sizes to try.

Good question, Rae. The pants don't feel restricting, because the fit is good and they have stretch. I just wasn't loving the way they looked on me, you know? It's partly maybe the tops I was trying them with. But in general, I just feel as if I am looking for a looser silhouette these days.

As for scarves, I had taken to using them for warmth (always), to disguise my long neck, and to bookend or add *something* to my generally very plain solids. I think with higher quality pieces I don't feel as much need for embellishment.

Are they just too restricting now that you're getting into BF and looser styles, or you feel that they don't look modern, or are not part of your personal style now?

I'm all for leaving scarves off. I don't like extras, and I only wear one when it's bitter outside, so it's function not fashion.

Okay. Not only (like Angie) am I tempted or trying to leave off my beloved scarves whenever I can make an outfit look okay without one -- no easy task for a whole lot of reasons specific to my closet -- but here's another bit of news.

In planning my London travel capsule, I originally intended to bring my slouchy trousers and a pair of skinny trousers (either my Gap Really Skinnies or my Theory moto pants).

Trying stuff on today, I just wasn't sure if I really wanted to bring any skinnies at all.

I probably will, in the end. But the thrill is definitely gone.
