I think the issue you bring up is a high arch/instep.  I have red marks on the tops of my feet from the slip-on sneakers I've been wearing.  I just suffer.  Most of my shoes feel tight in the instep.  When I was growing up I really wanted to wear loafers but the only shoes that fit me were oxfords or Mary Janes.  I still must have some sort of trauma around this issue because it's really hard to get me to wear either style. It could be that you have relatively high volume feet, but I'm not sure that's the same as high arch and I could see either, or both of these getting in the way of fitting this type of shoe. Yes I think that means high volume - I think your feet could still be thin/narrow and be high volume if they were deep (ha ha that sounds ridiculous!) I have relatively narrow feet and I always thought bony.  Recently my cousin tried on some shoes of mine that she was going to borrow because she had arrived to stay for a wedding without her shoes!  We were both the same size but her feet just fell out of my mary jane heels.  I decided that must be volume related. And that wasn't the issue. It was almost like the ankle strap prevented my foot from going into the shoe. Now I'm debating if I should size up. I did have to size up considerably on these. And I waited for weeks. Then I pulled the trigger because I just couldn't show any more restraint. Today they arrived and they don't work. The top of my foot is high (does this mean high volume?) and so my foot won't slide down into these. My wallet is happy but I sigh with disappointment. Another love will come my way...
