I'm looking forward to what you find. I also have this hole. I have a trench, but I don't want to sport that on the weekends. And I have non-lather jackets which repel rain but aren't very warm.

I love my Athleta Drippity. It is lightweight and perfect for layering. I bought my first one last year and this year I bought another color. I love it because it's that perfect jacket to throw over anything. I've worn it with both gear and jeans/booties. Great for both spring and fall.

The Everlane anorak is water-resistant, comes in 3 neutral colors, and was recently recommended by a blogger for all but heavy downpours.

I own Boden's Rainy Day Mac (now called The Mac) from a few years ago and have been pleased with it, although it's definitely a medium-weight waterproof coat rather than a light layer. In northern CA, I could honestly wear it through the entire winter if I didn't want to let my wool coats get some playtime. I did find that the fabric wore visibly at cuffs/hemlines, so the lighter camel color might be better than black.

Janet, I also have a Mycra Pac coat, which I have worn for about 10 years. Mine is mauve, reversing to black. But I just love this bronze color, which would look great on you (whenever you don't want the black side out).

Also adding finds for the current version of my Cole Haan coat. I like the tie in back; mine has that feature, and I think it's flattering without being too sweet looking. Mine doesn't have the ties on the sleeves, and I will admit I'm not as crazy about those. :(

I have these two and love them. The Cole Haan is lighter and softer feeling than the Laundry by Shelli Segal. Both get their share of wear from me.

Since you're already wearing a men's anorak, have you considered shopping the men's department for a trench? I don't have any specific tips for you, but I've found in general that mens' waterproofs are better all round. I have a really good one from Ralph Lauren (very lucky find!) Maybe the capricious gods of fashion imagine that women don't go out in the rain. I dunno.

Like rizamai, I have the Eddie Bauer Mackenzie trench and love it. I have many jackets and coats but needed something lightweight and waterproof for travel. It served me well on our recent trip to London. It's not warm but allows for a layer under and I was warm and dry for a day of sightseeing. It did come in Tall which I'm sort of regretting not getting (I'm 5'9) but it fits like the picture and I think the tall would have been way too long in the sleeves. This one fits perfectly.

Greyscale, I've been trying to find vintage Woolrich catalogs online, but so far no success. Back then, I thought the design was unique to Woolrich, but now I think at least LLBean made them too.

The term 60/40 refers to the fabric which was 60% cotton and 40% nylon. The new jacket still has this fabric blend. My husband, who had one in the 70s too, called it high tech for its time. He has since moved on to Goretex. When I lived on the Gulf Coast it was a great winter jacket. Now that I live in the high desert it's more of a fall/spring jacket.

I'm very impressed that your mother sewed them. I don't think my sewing machine could have handled it.

JAileen, I've never heard anyone else refer to a 60/40!! My mother sewed her own for herself and my dad in the 70s, and they both still wear theirs to this day. They called them 60/40s even though they weren't name brand.

The season's first rain got me thinking about this last week, also. I found a few possibilities for myself:

Athleta's nice looking anorak - fairly standard, but less gear-ish than some
http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....=138963072

Or the Athleta / Derek Lam parka (I am coveting this, even though it's expensive and rather impractical with the short sleeves)
http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....=721859002

And I threw this Uniqlo jacket in with my Uniqlo/Lemaire collection order - for me the weird shape is possibly good, but it might just be weird (and it's not fully waterproof)
http://www.uniqlo.com/us/produ.....tml#09-003

I love my Eddie Bauer Mackenzie trench! It stands up well to the rain, has great pockets, comes in a wide range of sizes, and is neutral enough that it works with casual outfits as well as slightly dressier ones.

Looks like it is currently on sale, too! I have the dark gray one.

Edited to add: I know several people who are also fans of EB's Girl on the Go trench. It looks slightly more like gear, but has the advantage of being longer and thus keeping your legs drier.

well since I live in the rainy city, this is one area I can share some of my research. Its a bit of a challenge to find an actual waterproof (not resistant) one that is stylish.
Rei carries several variations of a waterproof trench style from their REI brand as well as North Face, Merrell & Marmot that are popular here.

Danish designer Ilse Jacobsen has a few waterproof jackets, I tried an anorak that sadly ended up being too small, but the quality was super, Nice non-black color options
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GY.....B00IIHM3B6
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00II.....B009672RXG

Janet I have this hole too (and I live in a place with loads of rain)! Anoraks usually feel a little too rugged for my style, but I'm not sure what else to try. Will keep an eye on this thread.

Ok, this suggestion is probably too gearish, but it's a great jacket: I just bought another Woolrich 60/40 coat. They've renamed it but it's basically the same jacket I bought in 1975. I wore it in the pouring rain the other day and I didn't get wet. I love the plaid lining and all the pockets. It's really a classic.

Hi all! With the rain we are having, I am realizing I have a bit of a wardrobe hole in my coat/jacket collection. Pretty weird for Queen Jacket, right? Well, I find myself on rainy but casual days wearing non-waterproof jackets and coats a lot because the two rain-appropriate pieces of outerwear I own are 1) the teal Burberry trench, which I love, but sometimes I want a more neutral and more casual option, and 2) my white Helly Hansen hooded shell, which is way *too* casual, seeing as it's, well, gear, and it's actually a men's jacket (which I like because I can layer lots underneath it and it covers my behind).

So it seems I'm in the market for a third option: a water-resistant trench or anorak in a neutral color (not tan for me, maybe grey, navy, or black, perhaps even a pewter or gunmetal?), long enough to cover my backside, and a casual style that works to simply throw on with jeans. A hood would be nice. It doesn't have to be terribly warm because I want to wear it in spring and fall, and I can always layer under it in the winter.

Any ideas or recommendations? I glanced around the mall when I was there a couple of nights ago but saw absolutely nothing. I'm about to start looking around online but thought I'd see if you all had ideas too. Thanks in advance!
