Oh I am sad! It was so pretty. You are right that our climate is probably reasonably similar to San Francisco, which I have only been to the once, in 2013. The spring then seemed similar to an Auckland spring.
I am interested that Suz said coats with a lot of polyester don’t breathe well. I wonder if that’s why my coat has even felt too warm in a couple of recent warmer winters?

This coat must be beautiful with your white hair, Janet!

Can you keep it for dressier settings? Then you can keep it pristine looking.

ETA: Saw that you retuned it. That's good too.

Bummer that it wouldn't work for you, JAileen. I think it would have looked gorgeous on you. I love the pretty, classic style and the Chanel vibe of the fabric. Boucle or tweed fabric like this is usually more synthetic and less wool, I think.

I made a wool tweed coat that I underlined with flannel (meaning, there is a cotton flannel layer between the outer fabric and the satin lining), and it is cozy. On a ready-made coat, if the bottom of the lining hangs free, you can peek underneath and see if there is any insulation that would help keep the coat more warm and wind-resistant. Some satin lining fabrics are backed in flannel, too.

Hey you guys were very helpful - thank you. I’ve decided to return it. Uncertainty about durability of the fabric and probable lack of warmth for our typical winter temps.

Jenni, I’m not sure, but I think your climate is similar to San Francisco. This coat would be a slam dunk for there.

BlueJay, the sleeves are two inches too long.

While it wouldn't work with bulky layers, it would be nice with finer, refined layers and then paired with, say, knee high stompy weather boots in a Cartman kind of juxtaposition, "whatevah, whatevah, I'm going to do what I waaaant." A way of modernizing a coat I had and wore in the 60s.

It's a pretty coat with a nice silhouette and style.. I can't comment on the quality of the material though. You said it fit nicely except for the sleeves. Are they too long or too short? If too short, then I would return it.

I think you could style it with lots of other colours because the coat is neutral.

My absolute fave coat is 15% wool and 85% polyester, black and white tweed, bought in 2011 and has worn like iron, really warm in this climate ( more temperate than yours though).
I am a Yay!

It's so pretty! I'd have been tempted, too.

I like the ladylike style -- could work for dressier situations.

Lesley -- yes, shoulder season is the spring / fall.

It's awfully hard to say. I'd check reviews of this brand. Some poly/nylon blends wear really hard, in fact -- last longer and pill less than wool.

However, that doesn't mean they are as warm. Typically, they are not and they don't breathe, either, so paradoxically, one can overheat.

In my own climate, I might be able to wear a coat like this all year (or almost all year) with the right underlayers. But in a true winter climate? Nope. It's cut too close to the body to be able to layer a puffer under it, I think.

My experience with coats like this ( in a poly tweed ) is excessive snagging and pilling - and the fabrics look really crappy very quickly .

What has your experience been with the Laundry brand? Mine has been that they don’t select fabrics that wear well. My experience was with a couple of tops, but it would make me hesitant.

That’s a hard one. It is a lovely tweed, and looks like it would go beautifully with your hair.

I’ve been shopping for a cloth coat for over a year, and find so, so many made with polyester and acrylic blends with just a smidge of wool and/or cashmere…and they advertise themselves as a wool coat!

I was surprised that the Coat I bought at NAS has only 17% wool, 51% poly, some acrylic and nylon. It feels warm, though. I’m planning on wearing it through winter. Will add a micro puffer for extra insulation if required.

I think the Laundry stuff is generally well thought out as to design.
What I like about this coat is that it has a ladylike style but in a sportier length. Of course, coats make me smile and I have no problem with polyester. It won't be warm but you know that. Will it end up pilling with wear? Eh, it's tweed, who cares.

Hmm, I don't have enough fabric knowledge to comment on that bit of your question, but fwiw I have a few polyester items that I've had no problems with ... they breathe, wash well, etc. I think the quality of polyester has improved?

It is a great coat but it does look like a shoulder season coat. However, the neutral colour and classic cut and texture make me think you'd have it for many years. I think I'd keep it ...

Curious what others will say!

I recently bought this coat from Macy’s. It’s tweed, and seems well made. Except for sleeve length, it fits nicely. I love the tweed fabric and it has a nice weight. It’s over 90 percent polyester, though. I really try to avoid polyester. I blew it here, obviously. My question about this coat is would I be able to get enough wear out of it to justify getting it? How could I style it? And would it be warm when it’s cold? Our shoulder seasons are short, with cold dry winters. Do you think it’s worth keeping? I have plenty of wool and down coats. It really is a pretty coat…
