Ok, I don't like the coat. The only way I like it is open, and I don't believe in that. The back bothers me. It doesn't look swingy enough for me... Hmm. I'm kinda cranky this morning...

Janet, it does make me feel... lumpy, I guess. Especially in comparison to my other coats! The swingy oversizedness on its own does not bother me, but from the back I do think it makes me look a bit thick because it's not swinging freely.

Ummlila, that's lovely but I actually already own a bottle green wool coat! (It's a duffle style, so a bit different, but even so I think one coat in that color is sufficient.)

Dang. I love the color and style on you, and I think from the front it's a winner. I see what you mean about the back. I have this fit problem frequently too -- with tops, dresses and coats, so I think it's a short-waisted/narrow back/slight pear shape issue more than anything, since those are three traits you and I have in common. I don't have much of a booty, so it's not that things get caught on my tush so much as my hips.

I'm torn. I often sacrifice a bit in back view flattery simply because it's really tough to flatter me from the back (scoliosis doesn't help), but this illustrates why most of my coats have more structure and a more defined waist. At the very least, back vents help alleviate this a little. I know teal is not an easy color to find in a coat (I have looked too!), and long coat fit is so difficult that it's tempting to compromise.

I think the most important thing here is not whether it would bother any of the rest of us -- does it bother YOU? My experience is that coats rarely look flawless all day long, considering we wear them over bulky layers of clothing, etc. But if you will be aware of this fit issue and it will subconsciously bother you when you wear the coat, will you ever feel fab in it? Or is this something you can live with? I suspect we all have different benchmarks on this, sort of like the JFE phenomenon.

Ginger, that's really interesting. I have a swayback but I also think I have a bit of forward neck. I've never been able to figure out the source of that shifting back problem... It seems like it can be caused by many things. I do know that defined shoulder seams (which this coat lacks) and shoulder pads help keep things in place better.
You are right it hat I have a very narrow back too - it's significantly narrower than my front which causes fit problems like back neck gaping. DianeG showed me a sizing diagram from one of her sewing books once, and it put me at a size 4 back, size 8 front torso, and size 10-12 bottom. No wonder it's difficult finding coats and dresses!

Anyway, thank you to everyone who weighed in. Much as I like the color, you have all made me realize that this back fit is a deal breaker so I will be sending it back. Luckily, I have plenty of other coats, so the perfect real coat will come along eventually and I will be patient.

Ugh, shopping for coats as a pear/hourglass is so hard! That is a gorgeous color, too, but wow, that is a poor fit in the back. To a seamstress, the profile view is extremely intriguing. The whole coat has a backward tilt, as if your neck were far back - but it's not! Do you hold your shoulders very erect? Or it might be the narrow back itself. My mother has that, as do I, to a lesser extent. You need less fabric across the shoulders/upper back in both length and width, so the excess bags down and catches on your hip. In either case, I agree that this is not the best coat for you. (Darn it!) It might be worth it to have one made; you don't need significant fit adjustments, and you can control materials and lining for warmth.

I'm fairly sure it's not fixable. You'd have to completely redesign the structure of the coat, because I think in the end the biggest issue is a lack of structure at the top to hold everything in place. In any case, I don't have a tailor I trust.

Em, that's interesting about the Ellen Tracy coats. I do like the fabric of this one and the construction seems pretty solid, so I'm happy with the quality. However, I do think it was obviously fitted on a totally different body type than mine and is not designed to be very accommodating of different body types....

Ellen Tracy makes me so mad. Her stuff always looks great on the hanger, but that's where it ends. It's like they crimp corners or something. Things like vents, additional seams, better quality materials, better construction...I've tried on several of her coats only to find that the quality just isn't there, even at rock bottom prices.

I love teal and admired that Nanette coat, too and I believe the shape would suit you very well. But, cost aside, you should cross it off anyway because her stuff is never very warm.

Between the shoulders and the odd back fit, I'd pass on the one you're testing out.

For some reason, teal wool coats are hard to find. I have seen trenches and puffers, but not many wool ones.

Suz, I can't feel it but the look does bother me...

Jaileen, that's a good observation about the coat sitting too far back. That happens to me a lot, with shirts and things. I've heard lots of explanations for why, although none quite makes sense to me. I think in my case it has to do with some combination of small shoulders, forward neck, and narrow back. But in any case, things without defined shoulder seams, like this coat, do it more.

Unfrumped, your comment prompted me to get out my real swing coat (my black H&M one, which is shorter and less warm) to see how it is constructed. And you're right, it has a yoke at the top back and the swing part flares out from under it. The top shoulder area is quite fitted and has structured seams. It also has a big back pleat. None of which this teal coat has.

Old pic of the "real" swing coat attached for comparison...

Owie. This is tough. I get somd of that too because of small shoulders.
I'm thinking I might try to be Patient and hold out for a true swing style with pleating in the back shoulder. As you point out, it's "faux swing".
But I understand color lust and "it's teal"! It's the source of both excellent Happy items obtained by striking fast- and mistakes , for me.

It almost looks as if it's sitting too far back on your shoulders, like if you pulled it up at the neck it would hang right. The fit across the back would bother me. It indicates the cut isn't right for you. The color is very good. i assume you have looked for other coats in this color and this is it. I can see now that the sleeves on the petite are far too short.

I've returned a lot of things that I loved that didn't love me. Only you can decide if the fit is good enough or not.

Wow, that colour is so gorgeous on you that it is hard to see anything else!

I have to admit that the back thing would bother me. I wish I could say otherwise. I think I'd even be bothered by the feel of it -- a sort of "sticking."

But if it doesn't bother you, then maybe the colour trumps all. It looks great from the front and I think this is the right size. Right size, right colour, wrong cut. ARGH.

Here is the Ellen Tracy teal swing coat styled with winter layers underneath (bulky sweater and long sleeved shirt, plus a scarf). Please pardon the wet hair!

Pics 1-6 are the regular. Pics 7-9 are the petite, which I am definitely not keeping, but I included it for comparison. I think you can tell how short the sleeves are here based on how much of the white sweater sticks out.

Sooo... the bulky layers do take up some of the excess room in the shoulders and arms (but I could definitely add a couple more layers if I wanted!) and I think the sleeves look OK now. The fit in the back is a little problematic though. I get this a lot, with longer items, where the back gets hung up on my butt shelf. The other coats I already own don't do this as much because they tend to have back vents or are cut with a princess or skirted shape (this one, although it reads as a swing shape and is very roomy, is actually quite straight cut). As you can see, the petite (9) does it too so it's not really a length issue, more an issue of my butt shelf being high and prominent. There is plenty of room in the hip, but the way the coat is cut means that the excess room is all in the front there. It's not really alterable as far as I know. Would the back thing bother you? It's obviously not an issue when the coat is unbuttoned, and it's more obvious when standing still than moving around.

I don't think a smaller size will help. The petite fits smaller and shorter and still does the back thing, plus it's lost that dramatic swing and looks rather generic IMO.
