That's exactly it dawn.. I have a feeling this hat will get battered and bruised quite a bit this summer in a way I don't think I'd feel comfortable if I'd spent any more!

I think the fit on this hat mightn't be the best for you. While your thrifted straw hat mightn't be perfect, it probably would suffice for what you need it for. For example, I have clothes that I have set aside for outdoor concerts, festivals, camping, etc., which are not the best for my body type or in the best of condition... but at the end of the day, chances are that those clothes will end up being destroyed in these situations. For example, I went to an outdoor concert in Dublin last summer, got into the mosh pit with my friend and by the end of the night, we were soaked with spilled beer, covered in mud (rainy night) and our tops had been damaged from people grabbing onto us. When I got home the following day, those clothes went into the bin and I didn't regret it. If you were to lose or damage your hat over the summer, it wouldn't be a major loss as opposed to a $20/30 hat.

The rim of this hat looks bent to me, which bothers me. (That's pretty common for straw hats in thrift stores, though, and I'm not sure if it's fixable.
Hanna I had the same problem with straw hats looking too high at the crown and sitting on top of my head. I did find one that fit rather well at Claire's. It was $16- and I didn't buy it, but it did fit me well. Do you have a swap meet or farmer's market near you? Those are great for straw hats.

thanks, niva! i tried on all of those hats on my last trip to forever 21, but they are all much too high and sit very awkwardly and stiffly on my head - and it wasn't just me, i brought along a friend for a second opinion! so no dice, i'm afraid. i need straw hats of the softer sort... if that even makes sense...

Just in case you are looking for options, I fund some cute hats between $8-$10 at forever 21: http://www.shopstyle.com/brows.....38;fts=hat

thank you for responding guys! i know the hat is not perfect, but i really did not want to spend too much on what is essentially a straw hat that will be coming with me on some icky sticky situations... plus i like the way this one fits - most of the ones i tried on are either too high in the crown (is that what it's called?) and too stiff, so it looks awkward; or they are very low; or too floppy (which looks great on others, but is not my style)... you get the idea. and they're usually between $15-35 which is far more than i want to spend!

it was also something i wanted to try before committing, so a thrift store hat fit that purpose just fine.

i think it may be my photos or angles i'm taking it from that make it look not so good? it actually is shaped a lot like the NY&CO hat you posted, inge.

i will probably end up keeping it for now, until and unless i find something better... and not so expensive. i know, i sound ridiculously cheap, but this girl's on a budget, y'know? thanks for the feedback!

Oh so cute hanna! But I agree, keep looking for something a bit less floppy maybe? But you can definitely do hats and well.

It's not bad Hanna, and you can definitely pull off a hat, but I tend to agree with Alecia, there's something about the brim that doesn't quite work. Maybe you need something even less floppy, with a brim with more structure that turns upward (am I saying this correctly?)?

Would these be better?

I don't like the brim on this hat. I think it's because I generally don't like bucket hats. This isn't really a bucket hat but the brim looks kind of like the brim on a bucket hat. I agree with Jean that you should keep trying because there's a perfect hat out there for you.

Hanna,
I think it is a cute hat but somehow too small for you, especially seems so in the last picture. I think you should try hats, they do suit you but I am not sure about this one, maybe others will have a different opinion.

i always feel a little odd in hats, and i've never had a straw hat for the summer before, but i've been thinking about getting one for a while now for the various camping trips, outdoor festivals and concerts this summer will be packed with. so when this little baby popped up at the salvation army, i snapped it up.

http://i220.photobucket.com/al.....010674.jpg
looks nondescript enough, i know, but i do adore the brown/blue-grey/green band around it... it goes with a lot of my warm weather wardrobe!

now on me:
http://i220.photobucket.com/al.....010664.jpg
http://i220.photobucket.com/al.....010669.jpg

am i incapable of a close-up shot without making awkward faces?!

http://i220.photobucket.com/al.....010667.jpg

yes. one.

okay, that's it. does this suit me? will it work for summer? i would have felt too conspicuous in a floppy/cowgirl number, and this one seems to work best with my style. please let me know if i should keep it; otherwise, for $2, i don't mind putting this back in the thrift store...
