Lol, Jenn!

I did something like that, fashionintern, when I downsized apartments. I took a set of clothes to the new place, and the rest went to my mother's basement. Driving across town to get something was a surefire tell...

My husband has been doing this by putting worn/laundered items away all on one side of a cluster of empty hangers...except he didn’t tell me this plan, and I’d been moving the hangers to the front of the closet every week for months. Oops.

It's hard to look at issues like this, and I'm proud of you for the introspection and effort you're putting into it!

I think your plan is a good one Fashiontern. We all have different home lives, storage, personalities and attachments to clothes. It sounds like a slow assessment is a good idea and if it feels right, then you have made the right decision. I found my 30x30 capsule was useful for this, sometimes it clarified that it was time for a piece to move on!!

Closet posts are so great. I love reading them, and imagine the high of knowing I have exactly what I need. It makes me get all excited and want to go do mine Right Now.

Trying it in reality, however...yeah, that didn't work so well. As much as I want to have it all ready to propel me forward into my next step, the people who commented that I don't know enough about that step were right. So I'm giving up. For now. If things work out and we move, I will sort through my closet as one of my first steps in packing.

I have, however, thinned out some of my drawers. Thanks to a problem that shall not be named (housekeeping really is not my gift) that makes it difficult to get to my dresser, I've sort of come up with a alternate place for my tops and shorts. It's been that way for long enough that I'm getting a real understanding of what I actually wear vs what I think of as "useful". If I haven't surmounted the obstacles to get to it, then I really can't claim it as a linchpin to my wardrobe. I can see doing this in reverse intentionally--clear out one section and only return things to it after I've worn and laundered them. Sort of a variation on turning all the hangers around.

Anyway, I feel settled in a decision, happily. Right now, I'm focusing on the career steps that will bring a move and am also learning a bit about dressing. It's sort of like learning a sport; you can read about how to do a stroke, but you don't really know it til you've tried it out and made it your own.
