Wow, Staysfit, you do indeed have a lot of this gear to wrangle. Thanks for this very complete reply. I’m going to look into several of your specific storage pieces, like the hanger for camisoles and drawer dividers. But I also get a message from your post as a whole: take time to set up solutions that work for each item and maintain them, instead of the random stuffing here & there I’ve done in the past. Time invested in things like keeping boot trays clean and boot socks at the ready must pay off by making your home feel just a bit more relaxed and life just a bit smoother.
And that tip about “good” jewelry, in case of fire, is one I never would’ve thought of—thanks! I’m already looking for something to store mine in, and will add that criteria.

I live in a cold snowy place half the year, and while I don’t walk across campus very often, sometimes I do because DH is a professor, but I also participate in all sorts of outdoor winter sports and activities, and I go out and play with the kids I work with. I have tons of cold weather gear and here’s how I store it, all folded Marie Kondo Style:

1. Coats of any sort including my lightweight running jacket and zip fleeces hang in a mud room closet.

2. Thermal tops and bottoms, any sort of undershirt, go with my exercise gear. The same is true of my heavier weight fleece lined exercise leggings, and tops. I have two drawers in my dresser for all my exercise gear and thermal wear.

3. Camisoles, and if I had any bodysuits, all hang on a special hanger I purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond. It holds a remarkable 12 cami’s and takes very little hanging space. Cotton long sleeve shirts which I wear under my sweaters are hanging in my closet. I store some cotton tank tops in a plastic tub and on a shelf in my closet, folded Marie Kondo style.

4. Tights, gear socks, and hose go into a plastic storage tub, rolled up and on edge so when I open the tub, I can see each item in one glance. The tub is stored on a shelf in my closet.

5. My costume jewelry is stored on open hanging racks on my dresser that I purchased at an art fair. I have an earring stand, and also a stand for necklaces. I have too many necklaces though and could use a second stand. The earrings that might tarnish are kept in separate plastic baggies and in a jewelry box in my closet. I now keep all my favorite pieces in the same location in an easy to access container after the house across the street burned to the ground. The first thing the firemen did was ask where her wallet, cell phone, and favorite jewelry were kept so they could try to retrieve them, they also asked about pictures, but were unable to save them.

6. Hats, mittens, gloves and scarves: I have over the door shoe organizers on every coat closet to hold these items. They keep everything neat, organized and right where we need them. I typically keep one pair of boot socks in them for each member of the family as well.

Winter boots go in trays at the bottom of my coat closet. No matter how careful we are to make sure our boots are dry and brushed before they go into the closet, the pesky bits of grit they throw down on our roads seem to track in everywhere, and all my floors are hardwood, so I pull out the trays and clean them once a week in the winter.

I divide my drawers with shoe boxes. They keep things very neat and orderly and seem to hold up nicely. The are especially good for dividing my undies, exercise bras, which I fold and keep in one section of a drawer, and knee high nude hose.

My everyday socks are all wool, either from Wolford, or Darn Tough. I have sock dividers in a drawer and store them that way, but sometimes the drawer gets unruly. I also have a collection of small smart wool no show socks and these are harder to keep organized.

I hang everyday bras in my closet using large safety pins and a hanger. They take up a lot of drawer space and they don’t get smashed in my closet.

Chiming in late on the jewelry question. I've used a framed corkboard with fancy pushpins to hold necklaces for years. I'm more likely to wear if I can see them when I'm getting ready for the day. I have a jewelry box for the special things, and less-worn items like brooches and watches.

Angie, this is wiw last night. It was -2 c. As I mentioned, I thought I was properly bundled until I got to the subway platform. I needed longjohns! Also, I turned the scarf around in the course of the evening, so it covered my throat better.

There you go, FashIntern. Your layering and organizational instincts are great and made perfect sense. Make sure your outerwear capsule is dead right too. It's REALLY important. For your DS as well.

We are at the loft in Salt Lake City at the moment. It's -3 Celsius and I just took Sam out for his walk since I have the morning shift. All bundled up and not cold at all. Sam all bundled up too.

Thanks Angie, I knew you’d get it, given your past comments on your urban, walking lifestyle. It’s nice to hear someone in fashion acknowledge their use of undershirts/camis and long johns/thermals. Thanks for your comments on the different types of jewelry too. Hanging the less-expensive shiny things where you see them and get a smile, but storing the “good stuff” in a jewelry box or on a shelf sounds very much like what I’m thinking of, so I’ll take your comment as an endorsement

Jessikams, those statement necklaces sound fun to display, like #4 here (unless you have a cat) https://www.apartmenttherapy.c.....art-186094 . With tights, for me it’s the opposite as for you. Most of mine are the big, chunky kind. Here’s what I have:
Black cable knit Hannah Andersson
Navy fleece-lined
Black/blue pinstripe H&M
Gold sparkly tights (maybe HA)
Thin grey cable Woolford
Thin navy
Cream sweater knit (no cables) HA
Red cable knit “MP”
Thin black (x2)
Black cable knit HA
Black knit (no cables) HA
Navy horizontal wavy line Woolrich.
Black fleece
Black sweater weight (small hole in toe)
I think I’ll like having them rolled up, because any other way I’ve tried to put them in a drawer, they have managed to tangle themselves together (they’re sociable little beings!) I’d dig around and find a leg, then have to pull it out of the pile, making more of a mess as I went. The leggings seem more orderly by nature, so I have them folded and in with the long johns for now. I’ll just have to remember which can and shouldn’t be on display. Those are mostly more fun:
Grey chevron (Street One)
Blue cable knit (Uniqlo)
Navy fleece
Plain black (Style & Co)
Orchid lightweight footless tights
Brown horizontal waves (Adventura /Sundance)
Black/tan/white chevron (Hue)
Black fleece

Lisa, no worries. The rest of my family lives the car lifestyle, so I’m familiar with it. (My mom happened to call while I was walking home from one of the very few places accessible on foot from where we lived in Florida last summer—we had a very circular conversation until she understood that I was walking because I prefer it, which wasn’t until after I figured out that I needed to explain that, lol)

I was just thinking about this, because these days I use long johns and thick tights. I used to keep all hosiery in a shoebox, each rolled up and nestled in there. But these thicker insulating tights are huge and take up a lot of space! I don’t know where to put them.

Also the jewelry is everywhere. I have lots of BIG statement pieces and they are hard to store.....

FashIntern the cool thing about konmari is that you fold in such a way that items want to remain standing on their own. I fold my socks into thirds and then put them on their side, you can see that they stay pretty tidy even when some socks are missing from the box.

These are the skubb organizers from ikea, I find them pretty useful for all my small things (I don’t have a dresser so they sit on shelves).

FashIntern, I live in a cold wet place (Seattle), and a very cold dry snowy place (Salt Lake City). I also do the Euro thing every 3 to 4 months when I see my Dad. I lead an urban life, am on foot most of the time, and take public transport. I am seldom in a car. I have zero natural insulation against the cold. I freeze in Summer air-conditioning. Sooooooo, I have learned to insulate effectively and finally got it right!

To answer your questions:

I don't use drawer organizers. Everything is neatly folded and has its place. I'm good at keeping drawers tidy and organized. It's a bit of an obsessive compulsive control thing :(

knickers, bras, camis and thermals are in an undies drawer

socks, knee-highs, footies and hosiery are in the sock drawer

hats and gloves are in a basket in the walk-in-wardrobe

scarves are folded like knitwear in the walk-in-wardrobe

half of my knitwear is hung and half is folded

coats and jackets are in the coat closet by the door

real jewellery is in a jewellery box next to our bed. My real pearl necklaces are in boxes in the walk-in-wardrobe (I wear them daily so access must be fast).

faux jewellery is hung on hooks in the closet. I don't wear it, but I like looking at it.

I've also found that having the right outerwear - and a lot of it - is essential when you lead the urban commute on foot in the elements life. Perhaps we can help you with your outerwear capsule unless you feel sorted.

Thanks Lisa P. I recall you mentioning running errands with your car. That may be the difference. No matter what the weather is like outside the car, where you are there are multiple heaters all around you (possibly even under your seat). I went out tonight wearing a sweater and silk ls undershirt, light puffer, scarf, hat & gloves. I thought I was bundled just fine until I walked to the u-Bahn and waited several minutes on the platform. I wished I’d worn my long johns. Call me a wimp if you will, but I like to be warm. I’ve edited my earlier question to mark the distinction and make clear whose advice I’m asking. Because if you arent actually outside, it doesn’t matter what the weather is like—you don’t need/have this kind of stuff, and you probably won’t have ideas about organizing it. May I ask what sort of jewelry you sell? The pieces I’m worrying about hanging come in their own storage containers, like the ones pictured here. I don’t worry about hanging the ones I posted a shot of earlier. Those are cheaper and come from places like the Loft or department stores, or were purchased on vacation. Lol at you “cringing” at the mention of undergarments. As often as Angie has written about these brands as shapers and camis, it must be hard for you around here

Well , I live in a part of Canada that likely has the coldest winters, apart from the North, and I don't own half of what you describe. No undershirts, bodysuits (makes me cringe just typing that word) , tights (just opaque fashion tights) , layering tops or turtlenecks. I have a small skiwear capsule that contains a Patagonia top and long underwear and I think I own one turtleneck that I use for skiing or other outdoor activity. I put that stuff away with ski socks, ski mitts and hats - in a separate drawer in our basement storage area. I don't ever wear layering stuff or wool tights on a daily basis . Ever. My regular/fashion scarf/hat/mitt/glove box lives in a spare bedroom closet.

I don't have a ton of drawer space in my bedroom , so socks and hose live together in one drawer, and underwear in another. Kon Mari'ing the whole lot would be great - and maybe one day I'll get to it. I've sold jewellery as a wholesale rep for years and hanging necklaces is always recommended. I use those over-the-door multi knob-type hangers but have more jewellery than I can properly store right now . I'm always on the hunt for a better solution .

Anne, I’m wondering the same thing about my rolled-up tights. I did them feet out, which I hope will make it easier to tell them apart, but idk if it’ll actually help.

Suntiger, my only leopard is a ls silk undershirt and maybe a pair of gloves. It sounds like you hang up a lot more than I do. I hang up woven things and fold the rest. Right now, most of my skirts and dresses are the kind I prefer not to hang up. Sweaters are folded; I have a lot more of them than blazers (which are hanging with pants and some shirts). I tried rainbow order last fall; it was a hard fail. I don’t look for color first—I look for an article of clothing, like a shirt or skirt, so that’s how I organize folded and hanging clothes.

JEWELRY has been mentioned by a couple of people. I had been thinking I wanted to cover a bulliten board with sumptuous red velvet, frame it with brocade ribbon and put it above/behind the dresser. Hanging my sparkly things on it would let me enjoy them even when I wasn’t wearing them, and it might move me to wear them more often. I thought I’d toss extras/cheap jewelry in a drawer.

I’m starting to wonder if it was the right idea. Most of my jewelry is necklaces. Is it really the best idea to hang the good ones, like the pearls I posted a pic of elsewhere, and the delicate gold chain with an opal pendant? Maybe the better thing to do is go ahead and put brooches/pins on the board, but only hang things that are inexpensive, or on leather instead of chains, like these. Whatever I do, it’ll likely be nicer than the clear plastic cases it’s all living in for now. Comments/advice?

I use shoe boxes to subdivide my drawers, but am fairly messy generally. Once I tried doing fancy rolling, similar to Kon Mari, but because I have a limited colour palette, so many of my things looked indistinguishable rolled up, so I had to unroll them to find anything, and that seemed to defeat the purpose.

Glad i inspired you! The sock organizer has 3 rows actually, so the socks stay put mostly. Was from marshalls or home goods. Weekly laundry, or i run out of clothes!
Btw i did add some leopard statement socks this week-so less dull in the old sock drawer :)
As far as the other stuff, i dont have the best system. Will tackle it next weekend when i have free time. I have no coat closet, so everything is together in one closet. Had closet in rainbow order but the bulky coats are making me rethink that. Winter accessories are just in fabric bins for now. Drawers have makeup/jewelry/underthings (except knickers which are in a bin in the bathroom so i can put on right after shower), sleep/socks, athletic gear/gym socks/swimsuits, tops, jeans/leggings/shorts. The rest is hung up. Nothing is stored away, and i have extreme climate, so its pretty chaotic right now.

RL, whaaaa ? How did she know? And why did she care?
The last place where we stayed, when I didn’t have my socks and tights yet, had sock organizers from Ikea. They looked pretty flimsy and lame, but certainly didn’t take up space.

Oh, come on Cee. You can post a pic of your sock drawer!

Cjh, you’d think a combo of large & small drawers would be obvious, but it wasn’t , so thanks. I could use the big ones for pjs & workout clothes, the small ones for my micro-categories of underthings.

I just got rid of the last of my drawer organisers because a) they were plastic and getting very brittle and b) as thin as they were, they still ate up a lot of space. I need every millimetre I can get for socks.

And then there was the coworker I had who got very cross with me for having sock drawer organisers... she was really angry!

I have a dresser with small and larger drawers. Large drawer 1 holds panties and bras. I’ve pared down the number of bras, and only have one style of panties.
Large drawer 2 AND small drawer 1 both hold socks. Yikes! And this is after a purge. I have no tights or pantyhose. If I need some, I’ll go to Walgreens and find some on the way to whatever occasion requires me to wear them.
Small drawer 2 holds slips, camisoles and a couple of shapewear things.
Large drawer 3 holds some of my jewelry that I don’t want jumbling around in my jewelry box or hanging on hooks in the closet, and some scarves.
Large drawer 4 holds my pajama shirts, bottoms and cotton socks I wear to bed.
The other two SMALL drawers belong to DH.

It seems uninspiring, but if it adds to your idea list, there you go. Good luck organizing.

I was so psyched about Sun Tiger’s sock drawer that I looked up how to Kondomari mine. https://www.google.com/amp/s/w.....=undefined
Her finished product looks very neat & tidy. But if she wears a pair, the others will sag a little. By the end of the week, they’ll be lying down left and right. Let 2 weeks go by before washing that load of laundry & it’s mayhem.

I have sorted my things into tight categories—socks, tights, leggings, undershirts, bodysuits, layering tops, layering turtlenecks, cardigans, pullovers. Now I’m trying to figure out what to do with them. The undershirts and bodysuits have already been combined, and some pullovers have moved in with the cardigans. Scandalous! It’s been nearly 10 years since we lived in a place with real winter. I think the way I used to store this stuff was much more generic “underwear drawer” and “sock drawer”, but I’d like to keep things a little more sorted now. For the past few years, I had a dresser with teeny drawers that forced me to keep bras, socks, underpants & swimsuits each in their own drawers. I liked that. It was simple to pull out what I needed.

Inhabitants of cold places, who walk across campuses or commute on foot, bike,’or public transit, what do you do with all this stuff? If you use drawer organizers, which ones do you like, and why?

To be honest, things may be grouped together, dumped &/or stored in shoeboxes stacked in the wardrobe, as long as we are here. But come January, we sure better be moving into our own place, so whatever advice I get here will also be used in setting up my closet. And I do mean setting it up. The older type of apartment I want to get doesn’t have any kind of space set aside for clothes storage or built-in closets. I’m thinking of using Ikea’s Ivar shelving for most of my wardrobe, along with a chest of drawers for the smaller bits, but I haven’t worked out the details of exactly what I want to get. All the sorting & counting today should be helpful in figuring that out.
