Greyscale, yes, I lived in Berlin 1995-1998. I'm amused to see that those years are apparently legendary. https://nineties.berlin/en My son and I lived in Jena 2008-2009, and I've spent a couple months in several other places in Germany/Switzerland/Austria.

That's a great story about the film crew. It's so international here that not having a few non-residents would have been inauthentic. And absolutely hit up that friends for an invite!

I do have a science friend at the Max Delbruck Center in Berlin - I should try to get invited to give a talk! And a handful of artist friends who've fled San Francisco for the cheaper, hipper Berlin scene. The one time I was there, actually, I was sitting with my boyfriend in a cafe catching up on email, and a film crew came in and asked if they could film us for their piece on the Berlin startup scene. We explained that we were San Francisco tourists, but they filmed us anyway. Heh. So I guess I feel at home there? Or look the part anyway.

Have a great time! Have you lived in Germany before?

Smittie, that is SMART of you to point out that waiting until I need the jacket might not be the best idea! Right now the forecast says the chill will arrive just a few days before the shipment, but I should watch that very closely--it may change a lot from what is predicted this far in advance.

But what kind of jacket? I don't want to repeat anything I listed in Runcarla's recent post https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....-4-seasons

I really like the tweedy jackets I've been seeing recently, similar to one of Angie's NAS picks, but with less fringe https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/h.....V7QgDWUWe0

But I don't think that suiting kind of style would go well with the skinnies and other things I have here. What is there that straddles that gap?

Christine, thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, but they didn't lie to me. The info simply isn't on their site, and the reviews (on other websites, not just theirs) didn't say a thing about it. The intelligent thing to do would have been to ask. Oh well. Like you said, it's an adventure.

Greyscale, I think you'd love Berlin! Surely you can find a conference or a Max Planck Institute to do a stint in here, no?

Rachylou, between https://www.mallofberlin.de/stores/alleshops https://www.potsdamer-platz.ne.....z-arkaden/ and http://www.kurfuerstendamm.de/en/berlin/shopping/ shopping is depressingly international. But I think most of the chain stores are legally separate from the US versions--Mom wanted to buy my son a Hollister gift card, but they said it wouldn't work here, and we had to sign up for Club Cali all over again.

Karen13, I've been thinking that this dress, possibly with this top as a wrap. along with the one pair of tights (black) would be my "dressy", but I'd love to be in the situation you suggest, in which I need more. This would work for my son and me going out, but not for any kind of professional thing.

Thanks, everybody, for your comments and suggestions! It's nice not to be alone on this fashion journey.

I think that’s a good mix of colors and shapes for your new life until the rest arrives - just add a few more jeans and a jean jacket or something as it cools off.

Berlin - I’m jealous! I’ll have to read back through old posts to discover the back story!

Oh yes, I know someone whose spouse is in the foreign service. They always have to wait 2 months or more for the bulk of their stuff. They move every two years or so with stints training in the US in between. It’s unfortunate that the shipping company wasn’t up front with you about the timing.

You may need to add some strategic layering pieces, as others have stated, but what a fun place to go shopping. I think you have a great opportunity to think about what 4-season you looks like now. How fun!

Fashitern: I don’t see any jackets in this capsule, which I think you’ll probably need in September. Maybe a jean jacket? Or a trench. You’ll probably want to buy these in advance of the fall weather because running around in a light sweater on a nippy day is no fun!

L’Abeillie, it is so good to be back in 4 (or more) seasons world like what I grew up in! I am glad to be here, even though I wasn’t as prepared as I’d hoped to be. But it is already clear that I made the right choice; as the lethargy that had overtaken me in Tampa (preventing me from doing what i needed to do to get ready) has not followed me here. Rawr.

I can sympathize with you that I wrote a long post with a ton of finds—too much to go through. I have to laugh at how right you are about all the sleeveless tops—I made a concerted effort to leave all the spaghetti strap tops behind, but still wound up with a bunch of tank tops, lol. But I can assure you that there are indeed long-sleeved shirts and sweaters included here, and more importantly that there are two shipments on the way that contain winter weight sweaters and pants and skirts and hats, gloves, scarves, bodysuits, long Johns, tights, undershirts, etc. The first is scheduled to arrive Sept 18.

The question is not what to do long-term; it is how to cope with this very off-center wardrobe for 4-6 more weeks. You are so right to mention how any new pieces will work/layer with what I have now, here and on the way. Black pants and jeans were both on my “may need to buy” list anyway, and I just jettisoned a bunch of white tanks, so am sure I have space for another. It is tempting to put a long-sleeved, black bottom layer top on my list, but I know there are a ton of those on the way. Maybe a white one would work—I have to think about that.

Funny thing about my son & waiting for the ship to come in—he doesn’t really care! He’s got his computer, headphones & cellphone. I haven’t been replacing what he’s outgrown (he’s grown 3+ inches in the last 12 months!), so his things fit in a carryon. We’ve already hit up Hollister and H&M for him, and will be back for more.

KKards, thanks!

Hey, congratulations on the move! Did I miss some news? How exciting that you have wound up in Berlin as you had hoped. Do you have a job lined up already or are you searching? That will have the biggest impact on your wardrobe needs.

I remember the indefinite wait for our goods to be shipped, both when we moved to Africa and when we moved home. First the wait for your container to be filled, then for the container ship to fill up, and then the Atlantic crossing. So it might be even longer. Our kids became familiar with the old phrase "when my ship comes in" (with all the wonderful toys they had to wait to see again).

Regarding your current wardrobe: are the pics what you have now, or what is coming? I see a lot of sleeveless tops and not much for layering. Judging from Astrid's posts, they won't get much wear once this unseasonably hot summer ends.

So any new pieces, I would focus on them being versatile to layer and combine into outfits. I think this is the difference between the Florida wardrobe and the 4-season climate wardrobe. Not just the pastels, but the formula of statement top + jeans/shorts/skirt, add sandals/earrings/bag, and you're done. Vs. the layering concept: shirt (blouse, T) +/- vest (sweater, cardi) +/- jacket (blazer) +/- coat + bottoms + shoes /boots +/- scarf (hat, gloves)... So we use more neutrals and essentials; there is still room for statement pieces, but they must play nice with others.

Seeing as we’ve been here nearly 3 weeks, I’ve worn surprisingly few items. I followed Angie’s example and wore the white jeans on the plane. They have enough stretch that I was comfortable. I wore them with the blue tunic, so I could squirm as much as I wanted and not expose myself.

How odd that none of the reviewers mentioned that their baggage service could take two months to cross the ocean! Not realizing/packing for that has given me a very lop-sided wardrobe. Here it is, in full. I’m taking on the challenge of making these things work for 6-8 weeks (we left Aug 1.)

If there are professional requirements for my wardrobe, I will buy, of course, but I want to see how little I can purchase. Here are my thoughts on what I’m likely to get:
-anything needed for work
-"tennis" shoes to wear casually and for low impact sports
-some kind of bottoms for working out, probably black
-jeans or black pants would fill out this collection a bit and would absolutely not be duplicating things on the way.
-a *white* tank top (even though I have several cream-colored tanks here) might be helpful too.
-a jacket, if temps get low enough

For now, I've been happy that I had a couple of pairs of Florida shorts in my laundry bag when I arrived. They and the white floral skirt are not what expected to wear in Berlin, but were just what I needed in the heat wave when we got here. I bought the sandals then.

I don’t think of myself as a powder puff kind of person, but looking at this collection, I can’t help but notice how pale many things are. Most of them (with the exception of that striped shirt) are what I’d call washed out rather than pastel, but I still think finding ways to make them look hearty/robust enough for me with those light-colored pants (NB: 1 pair is actually “primrose” pink) is going to be tricky.

Many of the sweaters were purchased over the past few years and rarely worn, if ever. Florida was just too warm for them. I am inordinately excited about being able to actually put them on for more than three minutes.

What do you think? Does this look like “me”? What major holes need filling, and what unexpected combos do you see?
