I wonder if scarf-tying references such as Mai Tai's Picture Book would have some interesting ideas -- I'm thinking you might be able to adapt some of the ties that are designed for long, skinny scarves and use those knots/arrangements with your self belt?

I just tie it exactly like in the pictie you posted! Then sometimes only tie it double knot but hanging loose (&no loops!) at the back or even remove with a true (but thin, mostly elasticated) belt with or without hanging edges!

I have some self tie dresses, but like you, I am never sure how to tie the belt. Waist emphasis is not part of my style formula because of my athletic rectangular frame, but skimming my waist, and having clothing that contours along the shape of my waist for some definition is part of my style. When I encounter self tie belts, my most frequent styling is to pull the belt to the back, slightly tighten to create some subtle waist definition, and then tie into a square knot and leave the ends hanging down. It’s important to remember they are there if you use a bathroom! :-) If a belt is narrow, and it’s color/style does not break the vertical line of an outfit, I tie it in front, skewed either right or left but not centered, into either a square knot or as in your picture using spray starch…one loop up and loose ends hanging down. I have tried replacing self tie belts with an a leather belt, but it only works for me when the belt is the same color/tone/intensity as the dress. If I remove a belt, I often get the garment tapered at the waist. As a general rule, if a garment includes a belt, it probably has too much volume for my frame. It seems this detail may boil down to body shape and silhouette/proportion preferences. Do you love waist emphasis and can you break up your line with a strong horizontal? I love the look of a wide obi, or
leather statement belt, but they do not work for me.

Just remembered that I actually DO wear some self tie belts--on bathrobes etc. I find them ok when they are at least 1 inch wide, and I often just use a simpel knot.

Very narrow belts don't look and feel natural on me. It likely has to do with my proportions. Narrow self tie belts can look fine on other people.

If long enough, I like self tied belts to be worn obi-style. Like Sal, I don't mind wearing self belts at all and have a number of dresses with them. My teal dress was a 2020 acquisition.

I like the tie them in the back trick (with trench like coats). On dresses I have removed them and the tiny thread loops that "holds" them too.

Agree with the idea of swapping it for a leather belt.

One of the most useful things I've ever bought is a slim leather tie belt. It's lovely brown leather, only a half inch wide (54 inches long, I just measured it). On a dress like this it would look perfect, because it's so simple that it really doesn't dominate. It's my go to belt now and no matter what size I am it always fits!

When I used to be more energetic about such things, I'd spray starch the hell out of linen self tie belts and then tie them a la your photo or as Murph suggests. Honestly though? To my eye, many of them cheapen the look of the dress and I don't use them. Tying in back seems juvenile to me (unless knotted really loosely and the dress worn open) - but to each her own.

The tie shown is how I would wear it casually. A big bow is more dressy to me, but may not stay tied. I have also tried the square knot cjh suggests. It stays the best ( least fussy).

Haha unless it's welted in or very structured, I almost always remove mine. Certainly would do with a linen dress. Then sometimes I use the belt as a hair tie. Otherwise, a neat bow in front, sometimes jauntily off centered.
