Janet- Scarf Sister——-
I adore your scarf collection- I am putting in my request now to take your cast offs;-) Love how you have them stored. Unfortunately I have collected so many over years and years ( well over 60 -all shapes, sizes textures) mine are now relegated to a steel grate (100 squares) bolted to the wall. Not enough storage space in our home to consider your lovely storage method. Hubby says I have to stop by the time all squares are filled- lol.
I too find infinity scarves limiting but I have not attempted to turn them into squares because seams are limiting in their looks and placement .
On all but one I have opened the seam and now use it long. So far I have been very pleased with results and have increased wearability big time. Have done it on all fabrics from chiffons to wovens.
Let us know how it turns out if you decide to alter any.

You have a beautiful scarf collection. I have one infinity scarf that I have kept because I like the color. It has annoying Pom poms too! For whatever reason, I get complements whenever I wear it, and I have thought of hacking it, but my dread of snagging and shredding it when I cut it and my equal fear of ruining it when I try to hem it again, prevent my taking action. I have a roller cutter, which should work, but I’m still hesitant. If you do it, I want to see the results.....

As far as changing your scarf, would you only need to separate the ends or open it up completely? Does it have an inside that would show? Sounds like possibly a sit in front of the tv and do it by hand if either you are quite skilled and it is valuable, or if it is less valuable even if you aren’t so skilled, And it’s value is in its use and happiness factor, unless you would sell it.

First of all, I am awed by your collection. The variety in color, solids and prints, etc. Way better than my haphazard collection.
Laughing, as I have turned regular scarves into infinity scarves. But the ones chosen were sturdy. And I made a mistake of not realizing one had 5% wool in it until it was directly on my neck as an infinity scarf. And instead of I, I should have said my friend, who does keep her machine set up.

Nice collection Janet. Looks like you have some Missonis in there! (envy)

I have never turned an infinity scarf into something else. I wouldn't bother unless it's a designer scarf or something of very sentimental value.

Yeah, I edited a few more out after I pulled these out to take pictures. Some are pretty but I just can’t think of an outfit they would suit better than something else I already reach for. I keep them occasional scarf that’s a bit outside of my usual colors (the bright fuschia for example) because sometimes it ends up being just right for the odd outfit and it’s fun to change things up.

I've often thought about cutting open an infinity scarf, but then the reality of hauling out and setting up my sewing machine, making sure i have the right colour of thread, blah blah, and the ensuing mess on my dining room table sets in and it never happens . I love scarves too, and finally did a major edit this past winter, getting real about what really gets worn and what just sits there. More than half of it went to the Salvation Army donate bin. I love to wear just a few faves now.

Your collection is fabulous, Janet! Thank you for sharing it. The variety of colours and patterns is wonderful and they are all perfect for your coloring and your cool modern style. I like the way you have colour coordinated your scarves in your drawers (is it in drawers?) - perfect for choosing the right one for each outfit.

I am constantly struggling with scarves storage - nothing seams to be practical and easy - so I am grateful for useful tips.

I have not changed infinity scarves into long, but what Jussie says sounds good.

Oh and I haven’t personally turned an infinity into a regular but I see no reason why you couldn’t. Although the normal rules of sewing delicates/silk would apply and you would have to do a tiny rolled hem all the way around which would be a painstaking piece of work. But worth it for love

Ah, Jussie, those are two of my most worn! #3 was from JCrew years ago and I love the colors in it — it pulls together burgundy and teal, two of my favorites!

The butterfly print was from Zara and I just laundered it because it went to the desert with me and I wore it in Las Vegas to dress up black tee and jeans — it’s one of my favorite travel scarves. I’ll have to take a pic where you can see them better.

Ok, get ready to laugh at the sheer size of this collection. Believe it or not, I pulled a couple out to put in the holding zone before I took these pics. Haha! And this doesn’t include the small collection of small square vintage scarves I inherited from my mom, OR my serious heavy “outerwear” scarves — those live in a drawer in our coat closet. In the interest of full disclosure, I should pull those out too and get real about which ones I didn’t wear this winter. These are outfit completer scarves. Some I’m not wearing much, but they are sentimental and I may warm to them again. The last photo is my latest acquisition — the Zadig and Voltaire tropical guitar print.

:-)

Now for the question: has anyone here successfully turned an infinity scarf into a regular rectangular scarf? I have a couple of infinity scarves that I find rather limiting and would enjoy more if I could wear them in other ways. One is rather delicate.
