I also love stripes...in any and every direction...and on anything. However, on myself I greatly prefer stripes of the same width, not narrow mixed with wide. A big exception is the wide and narrow mixed Mexican sarape type stripe.
My favorite tee has very narrow navy and white or cream stripes that almost look like a texture and the narrowness reduces the high contrast. I seem to be moving to less contrast like medium to light gray and cream.
EF had some linen sun dresses last year in tiny narrow stripes of melon and gold or an olive and gold that I adored. Unfortunately the fit was off and length too short for me, but oh how I wanted those narrow low contrast stripes to work

I've always been drawn to stripes - I'm wearing them now! Like you, my preference is for narrow, low contrast stripes, but I also like graduated ones and diagonals. Most of my striped items are navy/white or blue/white.

The problem for me with diagonal stripes is my vision Angie - I just have trouble *looking* at them for some reason, they make my eyes actually hurt. Some plaids and other patterns do the same thing. It's weird, but it's been a long term issue.

Very enlightening discussion. I have bought a few striped items in the past few years but end up not quite liking them or taking them back. There is something I need to sort out there. I intrinsically do like them but end up choosing ones that look too casual or juvenile. Plus boat necks always end up riding up and scrunching into my neck (even if the rest of the top is big enough) so I stay away from them, and that rules out a lot of striped tops. They are all over the place so plenty of material to work with.

It's been so interesting reading everyone's feelings on stripes. Such a simple concept at first glance, but so complex in how it makes each of us feel when we choose to wear them.

For me, diagonal stripes are completely off limits to wear but others love to wear them. And the contrast issue - I remember back when I was a teen I had a very bold black and white striped sweater that I loved, so I guess either my brain has changed or my eyesight has changed (or both)! Of course back then I wore quite a bit more makeup too, eyeliner all around the eye was pretty popular at the time, which might have increased my own color contrast.

It will be interesting to see if anyone decides to try stripes again now. Color, spacing, size and contrast all considered right along with the actual style of the item.

I've hardly ever met a stripe I didn't like, and what I can't wear (rugby stripes on me are a disaster) I put on my husband. I just bought one of my favorite tshirts ever at a Bass outlet a few weeks ago - a navy vneck t with thin white stripes. It's perfect. Fluid and cool and the neck is low enough and I wish I'd bought three of them.

I love stripes on other people. I think they are elegant and classic. But I can't seem to make them work for me. I have a Bailey 44 dress with diagonal stripes that I like a lot but it's the classic horizontal ones that don't work for me. I have never considered the contrast issue before and I am so glad you pointed it out! In general I lean towards low contrast looks. The one stripey top I have that I wear is pale grey and white wide stripes. Low contrast. So maybe it is the contrast thing. Still odd given how much I generally like black and white patterns. Could be the preppy thing too. I am going to keep this in mind next time I reach for a stripey top in a store. And I love the navy, olive and white combo.

I should be someone who wears striped tops. Except after years of trying them on (probably the wrong cuts and colors for me) and looking horrible, I'm tired of them. They look smashing on my older daughter and other friends, but my love affair has ended before it ever began.

I LOVE stripes, particularly black and white ones but will also accept black and gray and black and cream. DD doesn't seem to be a stripe person; neither is DH. I am also irrationally drawn to polka dots. I think it has something to do with their ageless clean graphic nature. I have the visceral sense that a lot of florals and other similar patterns would be very aging on me as they would look very AARP and not in the least ironic.

I love striped tops. They look great on their own, or peeking out of blazers and cardigans. The size of the stripe definitely affects how flattering they are on me. Equal size, low contrast stripes or thin stripes placed about an inch apart seem to suit me best. The striped tee you purchased is the type of stripe placement that is flattering to me.

I like stripes. There were a couple of striped tops in my bermuda shorts post yesterday. I think I have 8 or 9 total. I guess my style is a preppy/hippie mix. I'm neither, but I like elements of both.

I like your analysis of stripes. The reason I don't wear them is because my style already leans very preppy and bateau shirts with blue and white stripes would send me over the edge of what I'm comfortable with.

There were some slouchy striped lightweight sweaters that I saw around this spring (maybe on Debbie?) that didn't look very preppy to me. They had thicker stripes on a diagonal.

Hahahahaha - "canvas bag of library books"! Gold. Rachy for the win today. EXACTLY.

In all seriousness, maybe the contrast level is a factor I've never considered. I bought a linen blend loose fit T in a soft white with a thin black stripe - nicely finished with banding at the neck and sleeves and a shirt-tail hem. Bought it because I liked the necklace merchandised with it Thought it looked terrific - but by the time I decided it was really blah and uninteresting on me, it was too late to return it. Gah - maybe too low contrast? How do you know?

I don't love stripe knit tops, esp horizontal ones. Not because they make me look fat, but because they trick me into doing preppy...the big denim skirt and 3/4 sleeve kind of preppy. You know, add canvas bag full of library books. Stiffly casual. The stripes I have - genuine tee with a cat over the stripes and contrast edging and a drapey one in bumble bee yellow and black and another drapey one with a Peter Pan collar...I do have a regular one, but I only wear it at the bakery, because it will be covered by an apron and jacket, lol.

but, back in this life...I own all 4 of the tee's below... I love the fabric on the athleta one (find #1), its silky, and so even though its from a sporty brand, its great for work. the vince one (find #4) is more fitted, and I love the variation of the stripes-plus its black vs the other 3 which are shades of blue.

I read this with interest, because I've always loved striped anything. I'll wear just about anything striped, unless it's vertical stripes, which aren't my friend. I have two striped skirts that I've worn to death because they are probably my most-complimented wardrobe items. And in the summer, striped t's abound! My favorite one is a white linen one with thin blue stripes about 4" apart. It makes me feel so cool and fresh when it's hot and humid. And don't get me started on zebra stripes -- I could go crazy with those!

Love your striped tee, it's the essence of summer fun.

suz-tanya - you both look fantastic in your stripes! I think I am also low contrast. It's my vision that creates the issue with the high contrast stripes and patterns for me. I mean, I think they *look* fine from others perspective but I can't bear to look at them much at all or my eyes kind of hurt.

I am with Suz here - I am low to medium contrast so I shouldn't be wearing high contrast stripes, but am yet to meet stripes I do not love. I am actually wearing a very bold striped top today, which is oversize and has large black and white stripes, so the contrast is as high as it gets yet I feel perfectly fine in it.
I am impressed by your analysis and how you exactly pinpointed what types of stripes work for you.

delurked - you reminded me I do have one other (navy and white of course) striped tank that has varying sizes of stripes - and that one is okay for me too. Cute dress you chose!

lisap - it is a preppy look - the slouchy fit and linen like cotton slub made it work for me without feeling too overt, but I do steer more preppy overall anyway. Of course I felt like I *had* to wear a less preppy shoe yesterday as I couldn't see myself wearing white sneaks with this striped tee and rolled cut offs. I chose my taupe sandals but will likely end up wearing it with the white sneaks too. Maybe I'll go to the country club for lunch ;-).

Diane - yes, sporty/preppy and stripes often do seem to go hand in hand. I usually have to just embrace it but the blog post image this morning didn't read too preppy so maybe I just need to work on the supporting pieces.

Oh man. I've posted before about my stripes saga. I love the look, but am incredibly picky about finding just the right one.

Last summer, I wore a short-sleeved linen version from Loft (Find 1), but it developed holes after less than a season, plus the white was too WHITE and the fit too sloppy for me to ever feel truly comfortable in it. I replaced it with a cotton boatneck from Target (sorry, no find), but again, the contrast was too high, and I only wore it once or twice. I thought I'd gotten things right with my J. Crew Factory tee (Find 2) last fall, but ended up being foiled by quality issues, when it shrunk and developed multiple holes.

I'm wearing a V-neck striped tee from Target now (Find 3) and, so far, it's been good to me. The white is a natural shade, no holes or shrinkage, and the shape seems to work.

You wouldn't think a simple, classic piece of clothing would be so hard to get right, but it totally is!

What an excellent analysis. You've really honed in on what makes stripes work for you or not! I love the tee you have settled on (but then, I would, right???) and I especially love the sleeve detail.

I have almost never met a stripe I didn't like...and I suppose it does look preppy and boyish on me, but whatever. It feels natural and comfortable and I don't know what it is but they do look good on me; I'm not just kidding myself here. Theoretically my contrast is supposedly too low to wear the higher contrast versions, yet wear them (and love them) I do.

I do think fit is key. My striped tops/ sweaters are almost universally fluid to slouchy. Those that are not have some other element that makes them "different" - i.e. stripes going in more than one direction, etc.

I often accessorize stripes with more feminine elements to keep things from looking too mannish. Either feminine, or what passes for "tough" on me -- i.e. distressed denim, a moto jacket, booties.
