I am more smitten with Kate & William than Diana & Charles. I thought Cinderella Diana and the fancy wedding was just too fairy tale, it's like watching a movie. With this couple, it feels so much more real and more relateable.

Smitten by the royal engagement ring itself! I had a faux copy of that when I was a kid, OH how I wish I had kept it!! Brings back fond memories of watching that wedding in the middle of the night. That dress with long train was so romantic!

Kristen, we're about the same age and I remember avidly watching the news about Charles and Diana's engagement.

I was away at riding camp when they were married and I was so disappointed to be missing it. No Tivo in those days!

I got tapped out on this subject pretty early, as I was asked to write the Canadian perspective story on this announcement when the news broke on Tuesday:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cap.....edding_cda

To be honest, I felt like a bit of a shill, contributing to what struck me as extraordinary hype for something that personally doesn't really resonate with me. The issue of monarchy support is also a bit of a contentious one here in my country, since many people feel our constitution ought to be amended to reflect the fact that Canada is no longer a British colony and should no longer treat the queen/king as its head of state.
All that aside, though, I'm happy for any well-matched couple who decide to take their commitment that extra step. All the best for future happiness to William and Kate!

I am very happy for both of them. No matter who you are and what family you are born in to, losing a parent as a child is a tragic event and I imagine that having family issues splashed all over the newspapers takes mental fortitude to cope with as well.

I have always admired Kate's style - it is simple and perfect for her position, I'm jealous of her hat collection too!

The Telegraph had a great spread online yesterday focusing on Kate's style - http://fashion.telegraph.co.uk.....tures.html

I am not addicted but intrigued! My mom was a huge Lady Di fan (she too has a Diana engagement ring copy) and I remember being glued to the TV watching her wedding. It felt like a fairy tale come true at the time! Considering the aftermath, I can't get quite as excited. I am not an avid follower of European royalty but I do love browsing through my MIL's Bunte magazines when I am in Germany. They always seem to have lots of pictures and gossip about the various royal houses. I especially like the stories of Princess Victoria of Sweden and Prince Haakon of Norway (who not only married a "commoner" but a single mom at that!).

I remember every moment of Diana and Charles' engagement and wedding; I was 13 at the time and thought it was the most romantic thing I had ever seen real-life people do. I still have a mug from their engagement, with their two faces on it. LOL!

While I haven't been following this story avidly, I think they are a good match and have been together for so long they will likely avoid all the pitfalls of public life that his parents and his uncle and Fergie fell into. I'll be watching for the fashion, for sure; Kate is always dressed impeccably!

Giving her Diana's ring is sweet and sad at the same time. Whenever either of her sons mentions Diana, it brings home instantly that while she was such a mythical public creature to most of us, to those two boys she was and is just their mum. What a lovely homage to HIS relationship with Diana, which is what is important.

I haven't been following this at all. This interview is the first I've seen of her. She is pretty and I'm glad that they are taking their time with it all.

If you were Kate, would you have wanted Diana's ring and all that history behind it or have a new one of your own? I would want one of my own. Diana's ring should be in a museum. Having Diana's ring just adds more fuel to the Diana comparisons.

Aawwww, William can't help that he's losing his hair! Don't make fun of him. : )

I like others love her clothes and that dress is gorgeous. I think she is gorgeous but as someone said she does very little except go to parties and groom herself to be a princess so I dont know why people are calling her modern....unless that is modern.

Surprisingly, I have been a little bit smitten also. When Charles and Diana got married I couldn't have cared less - I just didn't get into it at all. But, for some reason this time around I find myself watching the news reports, the interviews, etc. and can't wait to see that wedding dress!

I have to say I am not really that smitten... my daughters however... well that's another story!!

But when you are 4 & 6 and hear about a girl marrying a prince and becoming a princess, it is the things of fairytales!

I did really like the sentimental touch of Di's ring being used though. And I really loved Kate's dress.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something about Kate that I just don't quite warm to though *ducking and hiding*!!

One of our news shows last night showed Kate in a play when she was younger, playing a princess who ended up marrying "William"...

I overheard people at work yesterday discussing some special engagement and had no idea whatsoever what they were talking about. I had to resort to Google to figure it out.

After finding out, I was amazed. I was amazed to see that not only were my colleagues smitten, but apparently a lot of people are. Meanwhile, I can think of very few things I care about less.

I just hope they are very happy. I was coming up at the same time as Diana, and even wore one of those pouffy, Di-inspired wedding dresses. I watched her hairstyle, fashion sense, and public persona evolve, and then finally the tragedy of her untimely death. William would probably give anything to have his Mum there on his wedding day, and that makes me sad.

As a non-Brit living in Britain I have certain emotional detachment from the events, but can't help thinking how beautiful they are as it is just too obvious. True modern romance of the fairy-tale characters. Which makes me feel a bit shallow, to watch them as just photogenic creatures from the media, because they are humans after all who are about to take an important step. Parallels with Diana and Charles are inevitable (to the point that there was a false claim Kate had William's poster in her bedroom, much like Diana had that one of Charles - which she dismissed, update at 1907 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11766661 ).

Ultimately, I respect her for being very open when saying that joining the Royal family is daunting. They are both mature, seem to be into each other (I bet body-language experts were dissecting every second of every clip from yesterday in search for yet more historic parallel) and seem to know what kind of media circus their lives are likely to be surrounded with. I wish them to be as happy as they are beautiful and charming

Count me smitten, too. I'm not much of a royalty watcher but I'm an Anglophile to the bone. Kate is lovely, I adore her style and I cannot resist a wedding. I'll be watching:)

And on a fashion note, if I could I'd wear a fascinator every single day.

I have been a big fan of Kate's style for a long time. I love pretty much everything she wears (especially her cream coat!). I'm also always jealous of the fascinators she wears; actually, I'm pretty much jealous of anyone who lives in a country where fascinators are expected (I do wear mine occasionally, but it certainly isn't common in the US).

As soon as I saw the ring I knew it was Diana's, which is a really nice touch. Part of me always feels like an engagement ring from a marriage that ended in divorce is a bit of bad luck, but it is a gorgeous ring and it was his dead mother's, so who am I to quibble? I hope that her ring, along with Jessica Simpson's ruby--might start a bit of a trend and help some people think a bit outside of the box and consider going with a colored stone, rather than the typical diamond.

LOVE brunettes in blue, Laura!

Kate Middleton looks beautiful and her dimple makes me melt. I'm not a royalist nor anglophile but the story about the late Dianna's sapphire makes me happy just because I'm sentimental :)

Thanks for sharing!

Count me in Team Smitten! I'm excited that such a modern couple will be in line for the throne. Hopefully Princess Catherine has aspirations for doing some real good in the world and that she is strong enough to withstand the pressures she is and will be under. And hopefully their marriage will be strong and last a lifetime. I have read that the royal servants are not impressed since she is a "commoner". Seriously?

In a year where the buzz word has been Austere it's just so nice for the UK to have something to smile about. I think there will be a swift trade in sapphires for the remainder of the year!

Waitey Katey no more. That's Princess Catherine Elizabeth, and someday she'll be Queen of Canada, too. Whether or not her wedding gown is a success, I wish that the wedding be a success.
