Liesbeth, again, that’s where you have to consider the source. The NYT has a history of declaring things a “trend” with only a couple examples—different sports for kids or ways of seeing doctors or whatever. Idk if they do this with fashion or not, but they sure do with other things. Makes me think they are also putting too much weight on these changes.

Thanks FI. I know parkas and puffies have been trending but 'cloth coats' have never disappeared here and were always trending in some way too, like the minimalist cocoon overcoat a couple of years back, now overshirt and checkered styles... and the classic narrow cut knee-length style is always there.

I love cloth coats, and have quite a few, though during this past year, most have gone unworn. I have them in various lengths in white, black, brown, blue-green, red, burgundy, and orange.

Liesbeth, it’s the NYT, known for labeling anything and everything done by two or more people a trend. I think what they’re actually saying is that puffy mania may be winding down. I mean, puffies are made of fabric and have been around at least half a century, but there were some changes a decade ago that led to a huge rise in their popularity. Now that they’re settling down, what else is there?
Also “cloth coats” strikes me as the same kind of nonsense catchall as “Stoffhose”. Granted, leather is an option for pants or coats/jackets, but really, the descriptor “fabric” is applicable to such a large portion of them as not to be descriptive at all.

I don't get the 'resurgence'. I don't remember a time in my life when cloth coats (counting big overcoats, wrap coats, trenches and duffle coats etc as the article seems to do) weren't all around? I mean they were probably black in the nineties but still.... Is that different in the States?

Cat2, alpaca is soft and quite warm. I have an alpaca sweater dress that is perfect in deep winter. It is warmer than most wool and less itchy, also light weight. I would love an alpaca coat.

I love a good wool coat . Wearing a puffer or parka every day in the winter can be so soul-crushing, and the days it was warm enough for a wool coat , I was all over it. Carla - Sentaler coats are the best - can't wait to see what you buy, if you do !

The fact that so many are currently styled in the wrap, very open-necked style tells me what I need to know about their warmth and intended form vs function ratio. Even before I get to the designer’s comment about how they are meant to be layered. That makes them a transitional item in our 4 season climate, and even then not the most practical option compared to leather, lightweight puffers, etc. They’re also very dressy for my style and audience these days (even before Covid I had stopped working downtown and transferred to a casual office located far away from fashionistas).
That said they are beautiful. I saw a mom out pushing a stroller in a short chartreuse version yesterday and it made me smile. The brand Carla has linked looks lovely, and alpaca is indeed very warm. I’ll make a point to visit the showroom some day. The locally made small brand I’ve had my eye on for years makes custom coats and advertises some construction details such as a flannel backing and chamois lining for warmth and wind protection. If I ever bite the bullet on a nice one it’d probably be one of theirs, for these features and the ability to choose some details and have it tailored to fit.

Many years ago I used to wonder how the young women calmly walked around downtown in pretty cloth coats when I would be freezing. Thinsulate lining! Also, an older friend I had at the time used to take her cloth coats to the tailor and have a lambswool interlining put it.

My first colored coat was bought right off the mannequin when a family friend took me out shopping on a weekend away from school. Hot pink with asymmetrical closing and big gumball buttons. Never had dreamed of a colored coat. Wore it practically to shreds since Philadelphia was extra sooty and dirty and it needed constant dry cleaning.

Walking around Manhattan with my cousin he remarked, "Everybody's staring at you." I was startled. He added that they'd never seen anyone in a coat like that.

I love colored overcoats and have aubergine, navy blue and burgundy. However, I did try wearing something other than black in New York and the city managed to wreck it in no time— everything is a bit grubby, there is water splashing from the street onto the sidewalk, etc.

I hope this means lots of wool coat options next fall! I've been looking and looking for the topcoat of my dreams. I have a black wool coat with a beautiful turquoise satin lining; I love it, but it's quite tailored and, well, black (I have to lint roll it every single time I wear it, ugh). I would love something a bit more oversized/menswear with a button front or even duffle closure, a not-too-low stance, in a heathered brown or olive colour. But it's just not out there right now! Maybe FW21 will provide. :)
