RobinF--a lot of people say a tee, I don't know if I could pull that off. But florals and plaid blazers--great. I think plaid, that is more muted, is a fantastic bridge between the loud blazers and the professional blazers.

Irina--that's what I'm saying. There are certain wardrobe items that feel a little forced on certain people, because they have such a strong point of view. For some it might be a blazer, for others leather pants.

LJP--love Missoni, and came across a few on my search. UES--Upper East Side? My goal neighborhood! Yes, and in the workplace, blazers garner a lot of attention. I met a classroom aide who liked to wear a blazer to work; unfortunately when people would come to the classroom they would assume she was the teacher.

Sisi--great idea! And it is so not precious, just a fun piece. So putting it with most anything is a good idea.

Suz--plaids are great! I came across a muted mustard and navy plaid on my search that was super tempting.

Firecracker--I saw a girl with a blazer and long Bermuda shorts, so I know that can be a great look. I also think crop tops look good this way, and especially an actual bustier. Would be super cute. I can almost get away with it, but I need a few more sit-ups.

Runcarla--share that article again, if you get a chance. I also think the "just a few great basics" and "stealth wealth/old money" trends over the past few years are an attainable way for regular people to get some degree of autonomy from an unreliable economy.

cat2--Oh, I know. Some of it I love, some I hate. That is great what you said about "quiet, calming colors and pieces." I don't know that we always register that, but it is a real reason people are drawn to classic, luxury looks. As for collegiate prep trend--I love it. Perhaps because it was the opposite of how I dressed myself growing up--more boho/mod.

JenniNZ--good to know I am not alone! And they really do carry meaning, so we should want to be wearing them. If you find that thread, link it!

Dee--thanks so much. Maybe I will get more fun blazers. I can think of celebrities like this, mostly men: Elton John, Elvis Costello, Elvis!

I so agree that a pattern changes the vibe of a jacket entirely. I love plaids myself. And your chevron jacket is a real winner! Fun to mix and match.

lyn67--the right blazer for any occasion and lifestyle--I love that. It certainly fits into my discovery that indeed, there was a blazer for me.|

Staysfit--I do like corduroy, I like corduroy anything. And I have considered it, but I would probably also want it in more of a fun color, like forest green. You do it in a brown or tan, and it reads to me "radical professor," "radical, unemployed writer," which are fine things, but not what I am going for right now!

Angie--your blazers are great! You know, I was considering a very similar peachy/orange one on Poshmark. Maybe I'll get it and we can be twins! And your suggestion of a dress or wide pants--noted.

Irina--that is an interesting choice, about your bottoms. The idea to mostly or always wear it with jeans gives an entirely different look and meaning!

JAileen--I love tweed blazers, but don't own any. With sweaters is a really nice idea--pulls out the traditional quality of both materials.

And I tend to love collarless anything. In practical terms, blazers are probably not a basic in a lot of wardrobes, but they certainly are on the majority of "essentials" lists.

Jaime--if it works with your style, go for it! For some reason the regular blazers don't work with my style.
Sal--I did not think about how unstructured and knit blazers also read more casual. Good observation. And I don't blame you for adding three blazers--the current style is sharp and flattering.
elpgal--thanks! I love Missoni--I think at least one of their blazers came up when I was shopping.

I haven't worn a blazer in years. I've gone from a blazer wardrobe with some really lovely Smythe pieces (among other less $$$ ones) to only 2 or 3 now and those don't even get worn. The last time I wore my black linen Smythe blazer to work , someone asked if I was the CEO - so that was interesting . I will always love the look, but to wear a blazer with jeans on the weekend feels a little out of touch now. The older Italian ladies - what's the word? - and UES women in their blazers and tailored denim and sunglasses look fabulous but that's a different environment. Your Missoni-esque jacket here looks perfect the way you've styled it , and is right in line with a modern, upbeat, professional look.

Funny, when I worked in the office, I didn’t wear blazers. I had a suit for special occasions like presentations or interviews but blazers for every day felt too corporate to me and too ubiquitous (I worked in the Financial District). I started to wear them after jeans became acceptable in the workplaces.

I agree this really suits you and the pattern makes it less formal.

Back in the day, I worked at a bank and a CPA firm and blazers were part of the daily uniform. Even then I like the more non-traditional ones. I had a floral that I loved and another that was a subtle plaid. Now I agree that they feel too corporate and I don't wear them a lot - I much prefer casual dressing. When I do wear them it is with casual bottoms and a tee, rarely as a more formal look.

Love that blazer on you. It totally suits your personality and doesn't read corporate. You look fun and approachable. Most blazers to me, feel corporate or business. I wore plenty of blazers back in the day, when I worked in corporate aviation. Feel no need to wear them now that I'm retired.

Carol your new blazer is gorgeous and fits you really well!
I am another who has never felt very comfortable in them, they always felt too corporate. I am not corporate at all even when I was once a Chair of a privately owned medical business with over 100 shareholders. Luckily I was nearly 50 years old by then and well known enough I could wear dressy but not corporate items. Blazers feel to me like you should be a lawyer or accountant or female CEO! (Women’s blazers, I mean).
For J’Aileen, I wrote a thread about 2018 about what made something a blazer, good info. Sorry can’t link as on phone, travelling.

I’m not of the right generation to understand it, but the style content that pops up in my news feed reflects an obsession with looking wealthy. Quite luxury was appealing to me because there were classic pieces in calming colors available at all price points. But now we seem to have moved on rugby, then to riding to hounds and now a round of sailing? Anyhow, I think that’s why the blazers.

I listened to a radio interview of a fashion person today. She also wrote an article for Teen Vogue about how conservative styles (including blazers) are trending in part due to conservative politics and in part due to a challenging economy with less tolerance of flamboyance and individuality. Yikes!

That's a great pick, Carol, and it looks fab on you. The fit looks good buttoned.

I've seen blazers marketed lately with crop tops, which I kind of like. It definitely gives the blazer a non-professional vibe!

The photos below are some examples I found online that I like.

For a long time I felt that blazers were too structured and formal feeling for my style. Then when the more relaxed-fit boyfriend style blazers came back in recent years, I was attracted to them. I have a few that I like to wear now, mostly with jeans, but sometimes more dressed up with nice pants. This past summer I turned a blazer and shorts into my summer uniform--I found it a way I could comfortably wear shorts out and about AND a way I could wear blazers and not feel too dressed up in them.

But I don’t let it stop me I wear blazers exclusively with jeans and it gives a tailored look to an otherwise very casual outfit.
I don't wear simple wardrobe essential blazers anymore. I like blazers that are part of a suit, or that are colourful and bold. I also like my blazers tailored and shorter.

Carol, I love a fun blazer. I agree that the material, pattern and color of a blazer can change it from looking formal, powerful and businesslike to fun and or casual or perhaps into a statement item. The shoes tops and trousers you pair them with also change the look significantly. I can wear the same blazer for both work and casually by changing the rest of the outfit. For example pairing it with modern jeans, a tee and sneakers or booties. Have you considered a more casual material like corduroy?

Great find, love the pattern and color and how you styled it.
I love blazers and have had some to date!:-) I graduated high school and showed up on civile wedding 5 years later in the same cream chanelesque skirt suit which was made by a tailor for that speccific occasion-so I wore them when young, too! The thing is, a blazer is always dressier than any other topper in my mind, so in the old times we used it like so-for fancy, dressy outfits. Later I had to use them for workwear in an office, it is a power THIRD piece for business as you said it so well. Then, a blazer always gives a good structure to upper bodies (especially sloppy shoulders) so why not using them for casual, too! Loved, when sweat blazers came in fashion and repleaced my older stiffer ones with these. I wear the shorter more tailored ones to midi skirts (tubes, A-line, bias cut or pleated ones) and to wide legs. The longer BF styles are used mostly to knee legth tubes and cigarette pants to feel more covered but these prefferencies may come from my age(58) and not so firm and slender body anymore. I would wear a good blazer instead of a cardigan anywhere anytime- as I believe there is a right blazer (regarding cut, fabric, style and level of dressiness) for any occasion and lifestyle.

Nice Carol! I particularly like it buttoneded up. I had the same feelings as you before but I have overcome them. I still don't find much of need to wear one in my current life but I don't feel so structured and formal in them as I used to. Even when I was a school kid in a uniform we had the option of wearing one and I hardly ever did. I do remember two fondly though. A dark brown cord one when I was a teen, which I have managed to replicate from thrift and I love it. A black collarless, double breasted jacket in the 90s for work. I loved that and felt very pulled together and wore it to do presentations. Btw, I don't think they are a basic.

I think they can vary from being smart casual to formal - for a smart casual one pattern, unstructured or knit, or wearing with sneakers all help.

I am wearing them more and more - but they suit my line of work. I also am struggling with knitwear at the moment - I have some but it's an area where I seem to have a few fails. This year has been the year of the jacket for me - I have added three in the last three months.

Fun solution! I often wear blazers as outerwear (and innerwear in chilly rooms). Although most of mine are conventional business colors, the casualness of the rest of my outfit offsets that - at least to my mind!

Carla--I would create a meeting to go to, just to wear that blazer! That is some cut! And I love the buttons.
Roberta--great minds think alike! I like both, but the one on the right has the navy/floral combo I am so fond of.

This is exactly how they work for my life too, now that I'm retired. I kept the ornate or patterned ones to wear with jeans, and I really like the contrast.
