A block here is a great idea for NYC. I swear those streets eat footwear. I have had a lot of success with the Rockport brand (but I don't see any loafers on their site to recommend).

love love love the gucci, but i'm going to offer up 2 alternatives, but booties, one waterproof, which i think could be excellent because you never know what the weather in NYC will be.

I like the black and white patent that Angie found. But they don't have my size 8.5. :-/

I wouldn't do a bow, as too girly, and I find oxfords too manly with this type of suit (I have a nice, studded pair.) Tassels and fringe and plaques would be ok.

I've been googling, and *sigh*... What Angie says is true. That is just a gorgeous shoe, perfect in every way. I do not say this just because I'm a Gucci girl. But a low, block heeled pump is a smart idea and there's a lot out there if you'll give up the tassel for a bow or buckle...?

What about a heeled oxford? I've collected some oxfords below that look suit-appropriate to me (some without much of a heel, though).
I'm adding a couple of booties, too. The AGLs look classy, and I thought the Aquatalias look quite classic with the wingtips (though they're flat).

Check some of viva's posts, seems she was looking for something like that a while back if I recall. Good luck. And the suggestion about pant / shoe combo is a good idea.

Stuart weitzman has a nice loafer called Guything and Ferragamo has a smoking loafer called Scotty that both look great. Found the SW on their website, the Ferragamo on the Beren website. Not tech savvy enough to do links!

Those are very nice...current but timeless, too. But even if you're a spender, I think $750 is a lot of money. ( and I'll spend on shoes!) Although you would probably have them forever. Have you looked at Stuart Weitzman, Taryn Rose, even Ferragamo? Arthur Beren carries a line called Gravati that look incredible...there might be something there for you. You might even find something from Cole Haan.

I'm thinking you could get a similar look for less, if it's not a situation iin which you have to make some kind of impression with the brand. I don't have a particular brand in mind, so would have to search.

I think this style is a good choice for practical reasons, as you say. I may be in the weeds, but I think it's a classic type of shoe for "women in pants" who have to have some comfort level (meaning, an alternative to classic pumps) and a heeled alternative to flats of all sorts.

That said, you could easily find a pretty nice boot for half of that or less, if that would work with the pants--not all boots/booties work with all of my pant hems, for instance..
And you have to figure the same thing for higher-vamped loafers, as in the Gucci--how will the pant hem fall, will it hang up on the vamp.

I like to read Corporette from time to time because they feature dress codes, and questions, that are more business-formal and conservative than much of what goes on on YLF. They frequently discuss this type of shoe, what type of shoe with pants, degrees of formality, all of that, and refer to brands.

The law firm I do most of my work with is down near Wall Street, in New York. They are conservative dressers, with not a lot of creative flair that I've noticed. Most of the women seem to favor matching suit jackets and pants.

Anyway I'm going down for one of my occasional visits later this month. I'm planning to wear a couple years old but still fine black Theory suit (traditional slightly long one button blazer, straight leg pants that are a little longer than ankle length). It's not very warm so may have to have another layer under the pants. I'll wear a silk print blouse, I think. I'm thinking about shoes, warmth and walking comfort.

I have a few nice pumps, which would certainly look sharp with the suit, but are not good for roaming around as I will when we go to lunch. I don't have booties that are well suited to a formal look. I was toying with the idea of a block heel loafer. I don't want to spend a ton of money but would like them to look high end. I did a tiny bit of poking around on line and the only thing I saw as an attractive possibility was Gucci loafers. But they are a lot more than I'd like to spend. I'd be happy if anyone had recommendations or thoughts on this topic.
